WoW & FFXIV - PVP in 2023

It's been a big year for MMO PvP enjoyers, from 14's overhaul to their PvP system and new mode Crystalline Conflict, to WoW's addition of rated solo queue arena with Solo Shuffle.
Today I want to take a look at where these games are now with their systems and how we can expect them to develop into the next year.

    I personally think 14 needs 10v10 traditional battlegrounds It just needs to be open and fun not chaos or cramped This would be for The casual people who want the feel of something fair But don’t want to be in the most chaotic modes

    Not having duo PVP in Crystalline is the reason i don't play that mode at all.... Playing that with randoms is just a major pain in the ass.

    The PvP World Quest in the Cobalt Assembly is funnily enough one of my favourite PvP "mods" in DF right now because it's a mode wher eyou run around in a Free-For All colelcting Torghast Powers.I'd love to see an Arena or BG more that does that.

    what I want is for pvp in general to look more like WoW let me initiate duels anywhere in the overworld make it toggleable in settings and off by default if it bothers people that much to get duel requests or at least give us instanced arenas for simple elimination matches let us do team matches as well, not just 1v1

    Everything you said was dead on! Only thing I would add is having the ability to duel others in any over world location and adding a pvp zone where pve and pvp objectives are intertwined. Thank you for helping these great thoughts get out there.

    Not only are healers scarce in shuffles, the class balance is way out of tune as certain specs can delete healers and underperforming dps even when they're not CCd and/or are being healed. So combine this with players who are randoms to each other meaning little communication except shot calling, shuffles is gonna continue to have low participation until Blizzard fixes the class balance and *MAYBE* promote the use voice chat in shuffles.

    Moreover, when your class gets gutted in WoW, rerolling a new one involves a long grind before you can even TRY it. It makes it doubly punishing when Blizzard misses the mark with balance because you have to level AND gear all over again. I haven’t gotten far enough in FFXIV to explore the PvP scene, but the job system looks to be less of a grind, especially to reroll. Part of what probably contributes to LoL PvP being bigger is the fact that you can hop right in and press play without needing to worry about the time sink of content you didn’t come for.

    I fully agree on the points made for aspects like queuing, the fleshing out of existing content, ect, the point I do have to throw some pushback on is the ranking rewards. Ill keep it simple, there were ranking rewards in the past for ranking, it forced PVP to decline into massive win trading, and it tarnished the idea for alot of people. Having large scale rewards like mounts, armor, ect for specifically ranked PVP seems like (at least at this time) a total determent to the game. Theres just not enough people hardcore interested in ranked PVP to justify the risk of restarting the win trading as well as pouring resources into making exclusive content when it could easily be put into activities that a far larger portion of the playerbase interacts with, and that will remain permanently available like tribal mounts, achievement rewards, ect. Plus, having timed exclusive rewards for ranking just to cart them off has shown to have a far few downsides, many of which are at least to a point seemingly being addressed with the plan to put all past rewards for the normal PVP in a vendor later on for points, which would simply not work for a system based off ranking each season. Joshstrifehays has some videos about exclusivity rewards and the negatives they can bring. Unless/until 14 gets a far larger community around the ranked PVP scene, I just dont see a point to it. While they may not be much, there are some exclusive rewards like titles/adventurer plates made for ranked rewards, and I think for the time thats where they should stay. Making bigger or better rewards would just end up with people feeling like they are forced to play ranked, or would lead people just feeling unhappy if they did not get the rewards.

    For me I would want maybe duo at least for casual crystalyn. Still learning but trying to get friends on to play would great

    I have friends in FFXIV who are very much pvp heads(one who does WoW pvp and likes that more on both casual and hardcore sides, and the other who played Lineage 2 religiously when it was still good), but don't enjoy the game's PVP because of things intrinsically linked to how the game plays as a whole instead of not having reward incentives. They still play FFXIV because PVE is good and it's a great social game. That made me think about an idea. Have you thought about making a video about how PVP plays in either game and how that can turn away players? Like, specific mechanics that might be unpleasant but have to be in there unless you want to rework a lot of things within the game to accomodate the change. I'm saying this because I don't know about WoW enough to actually talk about it myself.

    That's an interesting idea! 14's netcode does make the gameplay more predictive and proactive where WoW is much more about being reactive and trading value.

    @@Sonnabend00 Didn't really think about world pvp, but it is a difference that will make or break the game. I mean, every single game with that feature will have those things no matter how much limited people might be. That said, FFXIV's PvP also has a lot of those cheaters, paid carries, wintraders and the like too. I don't really count them because it doesn't matter to my point when it's the same for everyone.

    @@Sonnabend00 Dude. What are you on about? I've never said that FFXIV needs world PVP. I've only said that every game with that feature has the kind of garbage YOU described. You could understand this just by reading correctly. Hell, I'm not even a WoW player. I haven't tried it and I'm never going to. If you actually bothered to read well, I've said I can't compare FFXIV's PVP to WoW's PRECISELY because I haven't played WoW. If you still haven't gotten the message yet, READ BEFORE ANSWERING.

    Thanks to crystalline conflict and moogle treasure trove I now enjoy crystalline conflict and frontlines i like the dynasty warriors feel to it. Honestly i will most likely always play solo but adding a que form multiple people would probably increase pvp popularity.

    So happy your talking about this ffxiv desperately needs a arena system similar to WoW for the casual/hardcore and let us flaunt weapons n exclusive armor!

    Honestly fighting for ranked mount rewards were awful & a reason I just didn't even bother with pvp in the first place

    PvP needs to exist in general in FFXIV. The shit barely fking exists. WoW is good but there needs to be a gear scaling and no gear scaling option.

    @@jag764the problem with 14 pvp Is that it’s too cramped Or it’s too open There’s not any way to legitimately have interactions that are interesting from the perspective of strategy it’s just not how it’s designed which is fine Except that the classes are built for that It really feels like the map designers don’t understand how a map creates options to do interesting things The most fun pvp is when each player feels like there’s some strategic depth There simply isn’t any because the maps are not designed for it So much open space with no hills or literally one massive corridor Nothing in the middle It’s required for the game and it really sucks

    1 year later, after leaving and returning to FFXIV after the "Big Change," I can definitely say that both the PVP and the healing feels worse.

    I’LL SAY IT REMOVE CLOUD NINE why? The map is just one massive choke point There are 0 flank routes There is ONE main path And the map is worse that airwana mall rainmaker (If you know you know) If square could to anything it would need to be opening up mid more than it is. Mid is too cramped and the choke point structure is way way way WAY too snowbally for it to feel good Sure CC is snowball like But this map is just ridiculous and honestly it’s the worst map Either make astralagos open 24/7 or remove/fix cloud nine as a map

    Oh and (this is late but I don’t care) The other maps are equally too cramped to be fun Like the reason wows maps and Bgs are fun is because of things like elevation changes range actually mattering And an overall feeling of actual strategic planning during combat In XIV there is no strategic planning Because it’s too cramped and too chaotic in one small area to matter Which is why I haven’t played CC in months It’s not fun casually because it feels way too cramped And yes XIV has to be different from wow But the difference should be a mechanical one Not an environmental one Classes should feel different it shouldn’t be “this is fun except there’s no where to actually have it shine”

    Cant play with friends,cant communicate,actions not happening when you press them = never will be good pvp.

    More rewards could help some but I am extremely against the rewards being added to competitive if they are meant for crystal/diamond tiers. Exclusive mounts/glams/weapons/ect in those tiers as you said would be finite and honestly just turn people like me away entirely. The data center 1st already is bad enough as portraits are being more heavily implemented with no way to obtain previous seasons portraits and literally on 1 per data center being given out each season. If they were going to add more rewards to crystal/diamond tiers it should be something like 1 million gp instead as per season it wouldnt inflate gil but also make it more desirable to do. Alternatively they could add a new currency only obtained via ranking up in competitive that could purchase items, gil, glams, ect but with the catch that the shop would be completely comprised of previous items in the games history. For example maybe they could get a relic weapon for expansions past instead of grinding, or buy levels in POTD for their weapons. Other ways they could reward is make the platinum tier and below much much better along. If they dropped the dumb deranking in diamond from failed matches to plat I would say diamond too but as it stands once someone hits diamond or crystal there is no reason period to play again unless they want data center 1st..... which is still going to be difficult do to win trading, however with more people playing especially at higher tiers win trading would become harder or impossible. There also should 100% be a way to receive seasons past rewards if they do start offering more, example being they offer glams pieces for platinum and below in season 6, but you start in season 7 if you get to diamond you can back track to pick up the glam. They only thing this wouldnt work on is top 100 portraits which should remain the ONLY rewards for being so finite.

    I also want to add I am not the biggest fan of adding individual ranks to each of the tiers, but not completely against it. I feel it would overcomplicate the already small player base and possibly kill the upper portions entirely as I feel a decent portion of the players run 2+ jobs in pvp so the grind would be at the bottom multiple times. If they did split the job rankings then a split in rewards would be a must too. So data center 1st for top pld, gnb, mch, sch, ect.

    exclusive rewards is what every game needs to be better. people like you who want everyone to get a participation trophy is what is ruining games. remember the reason all these MMOs suck is because they cater to the casual opinion. like yours. reward good players for being good. that is how you convince people to play. to want to improve so you can join that upper tier of players. when i first started WoW the guys with their elite 2200 transmogs and gladiator mounts and titles inspired me. i played endlessly until i was able to get gladiator myself. i havent played since they made gladiator a 2400 baseline participation award. i have nothing to work towards anymore. it ruined the game for me. elite gear is also 1800 now instead of 2200 so more people can get it.

    pvp in FFZIV is pure TRASH. white mage can obliterate, takes an entire party to kill one. everyone has non stop self heals trash compared to WOW or other MMOs.
