Would You DIE For Your Job? Would You Go To JAIL for Trucking?

In trucking, around every corner death and/or jail is waiting. When trucking or even just being around big rigs, a certain amount of respect is needed. If not, a life altering event can be waiting in an instant. Please have respect for trucking. Stay Driven!

YES!! Always pretrip and check those tires :):) Nearly every low inflated tire i've had was found during a pretrip,,, including steers! Most tire blow outs rolling down the road are from low inflation. KICK THOSE TIRES :)

You can have 90psi in a tire and kicking it doesn't tell you anything. I will make you a bet! If you see any driver from a bigger company kicking or thumping his tires walk up and ask if they have a tire Gauge. They most likely don't.

My dad taught me when driving do your very best to never ride the side of a Semi. If you go to pass a Semi pass as quickly and safely as p[possible. I then taught my children the same thing. As I told them it was about safety because no matter who is at fault car vs semi it will always be very bad for the car.

Seen the other day a truck had blown a steer tire. It had caused 2 cars to pull off the road, as well as destroying his wheel well and denting his rim. It's no joke when people say check your tires. Those tires go out and it can be like a little bomb going off.

Rookie truck driver here. See trucks driving past me as if I am crawling. Trying to keep my speed 2 miles under the speed limit. I’ve been driving a big rig tanker for less than a month and happened to see a tow truck driver making a u-turn on a 65 mph 2 lane highway from outer shoulder to inner shoulder. If I hit the brakes 2 seconds too late, that tow truck driver would not see his family that night. Stupid is all around you. Be careful and stay frosty.

Giving space to large commercial vehicles is something that is hardly ever stressed to the motoring public. I feel it should be, from drivers ed, all the way to the local DMV. There should be public awareness about this everywhere. Too many people seem clueless to the dynamics involved, we are not like cars!

I really wish the motoring public understood this. Everyday at the end of my shift I'm always thankful that I made it out alive, as well as those around me. Things can happen so fast and from completely unexpected places that you can only react. Anyway, this is a completely serious topic. Literally life and death.

Yes It’s called having one foot in the grave and the other foot in jail . A semi truck tire lug nut is torqued at 500 lbs per square inch , if you were to try to twist a lug nut that was only at 100 lbs per square inch chances are you won’t be able to twist it with you’re gloves on and you’re hand , now if that tire came off the axel or hub and rolled across the highway and killed a family , you would be going to jail even though you did you’re pre trip and put you’re hands on those lug nuts to see if they were loose , there is a 400 per square inch missing in this factor so tell me what happens now ? The driver is at fault ? Like when I see a semi coming my way I always imagine one of those tires rolling towards my windshield , and it does happen , what’s the story on that ?

Cheers for this. I'm a food service truck driver (In Aus) - and the justice system just loves to pick on truckies at every given opportunity. My company is very....relaxed (in a bad way) when it comes to truck maintenance. I dont know any driver in my depot that does a pre-trip. I'm fairly new (4 months in) and this is my first truck driver job - I know the laws are different in your country (I think much harsher too) but your insight will help save my bacon in my day to day driving (local). I'll pre-trip even though no one in the company gives a toss, it's my ass on the line at the end of the day. Thanks man.

17 year truck driver here, 1 of my pet peeves is Truckers that tailgate and try to push traffic down road. Personally I wish cops were WAY more aggressive in ticketing these trucks get them a reckless, or careless driving ticket, yank their license and get them off the road, don't need their kind out here. Even in heavy Chicago traffic on I-294 for example I don't have any problems keeping a nice stopping buffer between me an vehicles in front of me.

One tip for mountain driving is to look "where you want to go." Not "right in front of you" It is very similar to driving on flat land in this way or in traffic that is on coming. I believe it has to do with your widened peripheral vision you can pick up on small nuances like what is right in front of you and what is out in front of you. Visualize zooming in and out with a spotting scope it may help. Small tip that I've started doing it has dramatically helped traversing those hills.

We truck drivers are targets for one specific class of (mostly) blankety blank bleeping blanking bleep - the lawyers. It doesn't matter if you're charged and found not guilty - you get punished by the process. It costs a lot of money to defend a lawsuit or criminal charges, even if you're not at fault in the crash. Thanks to the legal system in the USA and Canada, lawyers make a lot of money by filling frivolous BS lawsuits. In the UK, it's a little different. Across the pond, the plaintiff pays ALL costs of the lawsuit if he/she/it loses - including the defendant's legal fees. That seems to keep people from suing at the drop of a hat even when they are CLEARLY at fault. Sure, all truckers have insurance against this kind of BS, but EACH AND EVERY TIME your insurance company has to defend you or pay out money - your insurance rates go up regardless of if you're at fault or not. When was the last time an insurance company DROPPED your insurance rate? For the people who keep the North American economy moving (see the last 18 months for the perfect example) we sure do get treated like dog crap.
