My dad was a truck driver for 30 years with the same company. He never had an accident. I was always proud of what my dad did. I miss him.

I'll bet he wasn't a whiny crybaby like the "protesters" in this clip. My uncle was the same way. He's driven trucks his entire life. No accidents, no DWI's. He is HIGHLY sought after for this credentials, and he is almost 80 years old.

I appreciate your dad. I love hearing stories like that. That’s why I love America so much.

As a retired truck driver the best advice I can give is invest in a mini fridge, an electric stovetop, a nice TV/computer, a small grill for summer, adblocker for listening to things on youtube, A dehydrator for fruits and meats. Use truck stops for showers, laundry, and socializing. But don't give in and buy their over priced stuff. Plan your comfort accordingly. It's key for the long haul. Drive safe. Love from Wisconsin!

@@lingesh2773 Is that a fact or an assumption? Euro trucks have a smooth, curved front. US trucks might have slightly less overall frontal surface from what I can see, but it is split up in various ways, so there might be a lot more turbulence. Fuel costs are significantly higher in Europe, which further warrants the assumption that Euro-trucks are quite aerodynamic. Especially since there is probably more acceleration going on due to the smaller-scale, denser road/traffic network. A factor that might mitigate that point, though, is that fuel costs is something that any shipping business would put great emphasis on minimizing. (Unless it's just a cultural difference due to said lower fuel costs in the USA.)

I did 30 years long haul. Admittedly, trucking is paying more now, but for the last ten years I drove I noticed the comraderie has been diminishing. With all the cell phones now and the Qualcomm for instant communication with the company, nobody talks on the c.b anymore. The restaurants are being taken out of the truck stops in favor of fast food. Hell, most drivers don't even own an atlas. It seemed to me that the the job got to be a chore. It used to be a lifestyle along with it being a job. There are no "characters" out there. I retired three years ago and quite frankly I was glad to. I still enjoyed the driving part. But, trucking used to be a fraternity. It's no longer that. There is no brotherhood. And really, that's too bad. Another one of those parts of life that are gone.

My dad was also a truck driver, he started driving right as I was born. I’m 22 now and he passed away couple months ago. Every time I see a truck similar to his pass by I always try to check who’s driving just out of habit:/

my dad too. he drove for the detroit newspaper route 26..from detroit to anchor bay michigan. we traded ration coupons for meats on the farm...this is how we survided.

I drove school buses for a few years. NOT the same thing, but it did open my eyes. Trucks and buses seem to emanate some kind of force field that lowers the IQ of everyone around them. People cut you off and hit the brakes for the exit they forgot about, not realizing that you can't stop that fast. I learned that if you were trying to get onto a busy stroad without a traffic signal, sometimes you just had to go, "well, they have brakes." People sure as hell won't let YOU out. People only care about THEIR convenience, so if it's not their child they're cutting off, or their food, they don't care. All they see is a big ugly box that is in their way. It changed how I drive around truckers. If they're signaling, I will hang back and flash them to come over. And you know what, it feels a lot better than being an a-hole. And you'd be surprised how little it impacts your GPS arrival time to just be decent.

Dude, I could be trying to get on the exit ramp and get out of everyone’s way and they’ll use the exit ramp to go around me before I can get over.

I’m about to start CDL school and I’m nervous but excited. I hear a lot of truckers complaining about how hard the job is, and how bad the industry sucks right now, but I sold cars for over 20 years and I can tell you there is no harder job than customer service and sales. There’s nothing more stressful than dealing with people all day and having to cater to different personalities all the time. Add to that 10+ hour days, working on straight commission, no benefits and sometimes not having ANY days off….and working 70 hour weeks out on the road by myself with just my pets, seems like an absolute dream come true!

I was a long haul driver for 45 years doing over size and heavy haul .the best advice i can give is Safety first do that pre and post trip like religion .and every time you get out of the truck .You can never know when something might go bad .you will also notice you tire more quickly ,that's because you are making more decisions every second .this will pass .and get in the habit of looking left right out front and down stay aware of your surroundings at all times .good luck .They call me the Barbarian.

I'm 1/2 way through my 2nd trip through CDL classes. Had a class A for 10 years but was an idiot and let it expire in '09. Now having to start all over again is a real PITA but at least I still have most of my skills I built up. Best of Luck!

Work your way up, start on Straight truck, then town work, learn how to load and how to tie down, learn how to shift. to control your rig. then go on the hiway.

Get some experience then just find a local hourly pay job, it’ll work out 👍🏼

The life of a fortunate truck driver: Work 70 hours a week. Waste time in the truck 50+ hours a week. Shower twice a week. Spend time at home 48 hours a week. Listen to spouse complain seven days a week. Put off everything because job is more important. Watch the world go on without you. Amazed how you just got hired ten years ago.

Sorry but if you are only showering twice a week that is totally on YOU. There is absolutely no reason you can't shower daily. If it means waking up 30 minutes early that's what you do. My personal routine when I did OTR. Pull in fuel up get free shower ticket, park, go in see the wait time on the showers. If no line up grab a shower. If there was a line up grab some food then go back for a shower.

@@marvinbennett8384 No my man there is just a difference of being worked by the system and working the system. When I ran OTR I was a night time driver. So while you fighting for the hole I just left at the truck stop at 7-8pm. I'm just starting my shift. When I'd pull into a truck stop at 10am there is hardly anyone there. So never seemed to be an issue fueling, eating, and grabbing a shower. Hell even now that I just haul local I still choose to start my day at 7pm. For 2 reasons. 1 I'm a night person. 2. Less idiots on the road with you. (I cross Toronto almost every shift instead of it taking 2-3 hours during rush hour(s) I get it done in about 45 minutes)

Maybe you'll think about all this when election time comes around and you vote for a guy like Mighty Joe Biden who wants to fix all the failing infrastructure and make a truck driver feel safer --- the only thing China Donnie did for you was call you a "loser and sucker" and let COVID kill off as many people as possible so you could lose your trucking job faster

I went to a tech school. Paid out of my pocket for my training and got my CDL with no job. My first job at Roehl transport. They had cameras in the truck and nit picked me. I quit. Then got a Bill in the mail for something like $8000 for “training”. I already had my license. The only “training” was job orientation. I refuse to pay it. They sent to collections. It ruined my perfect credit. There is a special place in hell for these crooked employers.

As a trucker driver myself, it baffles me that there are drivers that only average $50,000. I drive for a big company locally, and as of right now we are pulling 6 figures. Off on weekends and I normally work 8 hrs a night.

I was a truck driver for many years and I finally decided to get out when they started changing the rules against drivers. Law enforcement is very much against drivers so if you do get into an accident you can expect to take all of the blame no matter what the idiot in the other car did.

Must be over a dozen times, I've seen other car drivers swerve right in front of a semi who would have NO CHANCE to stop. So far no accident but my fellow car drivers don't know how lucky they were.

Yep, I lost count of how many close calls I had and I knew if I ever had a big one it would cost me my job so I got out of driving. I don’t know about any of y’all states but where I drove you could lose your CDL for something you did in your personal car, doesn’t seem right to me.

In the 80s as a kid I wanted to be a professional truck driver. I’m so glad I didn’t go that route

The trucking industry held me for 4 months. I figured out quick that it's not worth working in an industry in need of such massive reform. "Debt peonage" couldn't be more accurate. "Indentured servitude" would be a good term for it as well. You would not believe how many of these companies try to get brand new drivers to lease trucks just to be indebted to the company. It's a predatory system that robs the workers of their livelihoods. Many of these people have little to no education and don't see it coming until they're underwater and out of options.

@@lovelessissimo both of my daughters have been made fun of by kids at school because their Daddy is a truck driver numerous times. I have had other moms turn their nose down at me when they ask what my husband does and I tell them.

I’ve been driving trucks for 11 years, in the bunk right now. Truckers are neglected like slaves, expected to shut our mouths and keep hauling freight to facilitate the lives of ungrateful egotistical consumers and be hosts for parasites who haven’t driven a truck 1/10 of a mile. Bad infrastructure, demanding deadline, unhealthy lifestyle, unpaid time away from our families…. This industry, and the American economy, will have to acknowledge the plight of the trucker or enough of us are going to say the hell with this and there won’t be anything for you shopaholics to spend your money on. You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone. I’m personally already on my way out of trucking.

Bro it sounds like ur OTR but have you thought of local. I did OTR for 10 years then went local with food delivery service the last 10 years. I did just buy my own truck 4 months ago because of the injuries and surgeries I've had but I'll say I average 160k year gross with alot of overtime. I was making about 500 bucks a night. U were required to work ur 4 schedule days thats it. The other days if u came in u got a extra 230 dollars for working ur day off or u could work 7 days a week they didn't care. I just remember how much more money I made local vs OTR. I didn't have to deal with weight stations anymore because there where none on my routes. The trucks were already fueled up ready to go when u came in. Hell it doesn't have to be food delivery there's beverages like Coca-Cola or Pepsi even beer companies. Even grocery delivery trucks like Albertsons. Theres so many different things to haul and be home weekly. Or LTL companies Saia out here in California is paying $48 hour. Even old dominion drivers gross around $2,900 week out here. However the road drivers do run out of town so they gone 1 night then home a night. But they got P&D and ur home every night.

There were still independent owner operators who bought their own freight when I started in 1996. These guys were rich, very high income. They bought a truckload of oranges in CA & lined up a buyer on the East Coast as they drove. All cash paid buying & selling. For them, trucking was lucrative & they were treated well by shippers & receivers. I knew a guy who bought plastics in Dallas,, produce in CA, & whatever he could find in the northeast, making a giant loop of the continent.. Every cent of profit went to him because he was the buyer & seller. But for company drivers, it is a no respect job anywhere they go. The highly respected trucker who earns more than doctors is long gone.

I mean doctors are getting more knowledgeable so I don't doubt that they are making more than truckers. It seems more like the truckers didn't evolve enough to stay with the flow and I know plenty of people who truck as a living and their close to hitting the million dollar market

I wouldn't say that the days of high income truckers are long gone. There are still drivers out here that build up a small independent trucking empire and have multiple trucks and drivers working for them. This is still attainable. Much harder now due to the rising costs of fuel and maintenance plus the strict driving hours they have to abide by. My dad just had to sell his truck because of Biden cracking down on the Oil and Gas industry. Work dried up

Trucking changed my life for the better. Never in a million years thought I’d be driving a semi. Best decision I have ever made in my life so far. 2nd full year and I made over 100k this year at 26 years old. I’m proud to be a trucker and I hope more people realize how important truckers are. When there is no union and you become an independent contractor, the trucking companies have all the power to exploit. If you cannot strike and cause the owners pain, you will continue to get exploited and things can only get worst.

100% I'm union, make more than my friends who graduated college. Have better medical than my wife who works in a hospital and a better retirement package than the bosses.

was a trucker for 3 years. it’s a rough life. i got out and went to a different industry and make half of what i used to, yet am 10x happier for it. to all my former fellow truckers, you’ll never get the respect and compensation you truly deserve. thank you so much for serving this country.

My story is similar but I wasn't a trucker. I left jobs paying 3x what I make now and though I am not making a whole lot of money, my life is infinitely better. No kidding either. I have a better schedule, I am literally six minutes away from work, and the work is simple and low on BS.

I got halfway out as a Yard Jockey for a while, but not I'm back. Home daily at least.

I had the choice to go back to school for a year or get my license and do long haul. Went back to school, got a union job, stable, paid OT after 35 hours, 7 hour workday, home every night, low stress, pension plan. I respect what truckers do but there is no way in hell I would work the hours they do and have that responsibility for such low pay. When you factor in your waiting and on duty time, you are probably working 70 to 80 hours a week. They need a strong union and instead of pay per mile, pay by hour. The old argument of if I pay a guy by the hour he will just go slow is BS. There is GPS, or GPS ability, on any truck and they can be monitored 24/7. If a guy is considerably slower than everyone else, or milking the system you will know it.

I'm one of the few lucky ones. I'm a truck driver, but I am also a unionized truck driver, stable, paid OT after 40 hours, home every night, pension, low stress, great benefits, but I am also the exception and it took me years to find this job. I am paid by the hour, and paid well and I will never go back to pay per mile. I also agree with you about milking the hours, nobody I work with milks a work day when they are paid fairly! You also nailed it about wait time and all the other bullshit that comes with it. If I wasn't as lucky as I am, regardless of how much I love driving, I would be looking at another career, but like I said luckily trucking hasn't been ruined for me and I can still enjoy my job and live a comfortable life.

True what you're saying. I was a truck driver for 25 years. I quit when hourly wages went away. Trucking companies also rush drivers to the point of being unsafe . Send you on A 70 mile trip , where speed limit is 55 mph and jump all over you cause it took you longer than 45 minutes to arrive.

I'm a diesel mechanic for Penske and a lot of drivers that have driven for 20+ years say that it's changed so much!

I drove truck for just 2 years. I developed a medical condition that prevents me from driving commercial vehicles. I had it easy. Regional Less-Than-Truckload (LTL). I was home every other night, was in a unionized (Teamsters) organization, had a lot of great benefits, never had to sleep in a truck (paid-for hotels) and all we had to do was drive trailers terminal-to-terminal. But I'm grateful for the experience and glad I got out of it. Not worth the headaches and frustrations.

I couldn’t do what these men and women do. I did 10 years school bus driving and I saw these same issues in a smaller setting. My last 2 years, about 95% of the coworkers I started with were gone. The district would much hire new people than try and keep their veteran workforce. Right now, about 98% of the district drivers are new hires.

I'm truck driver and I believe the drivers that did the freedom convoy did it for the wrong reason. It should not have been for lifting the covid mandate, which is the message they seemed to be getting across I think is just stupid. Should of been for, no home time, low wages, dumb laws that make it hard for us to work. Companies taking advantage of us, the additude in the industry that we are expendable. Just my opinion. I have been trucking for 10 years now, and think everyday what can I do to get out. I'm over worked and under paid .

The same people who were feeding and supplying the covid convoy with fuel are nowhere to be found when it comes to the issues you listed. It was all political bs. When it comes to real truckers issues they dont even think their horns in support.

When i was in my early 20's i dream about getting my CDL and hit the open road with a semi... However everything changed when i found out the amount of money i would have to spend to get it. And even worse the MISERABLE pay that comes with it. PLUS every single D.O.T,State Trooper and Dispatcher will make sure to take as MUCH as they can from your paycheck... It is a hard reality out there,i have nothing but respect for the men and women in the trucking industry. They really deserve better pay and benefits.

@Alejandro Fallas It’s not that bad lol. I’ve been driving for 7 months. Getting my CDL only cost me 1000$ because I’m a veteran. The other guys in my class paid 3750$ and that money is taken out in payments. I’m averaging a little over 75k a year based on my pay from Jan 1st to now and I’m a rookie. After one year experience I can go work anywhere and easily make up to 100k plus as a company driver. I love this job

@@ronclifford3336 no doubt. Thanks. There’s certainly a lot of bad that comes with being a trucker buts there’s also a lot of good. Before I started driving I worked as a dispatcher and a terminal manager. Driving for me has been the best aspect so far. It is a love hate relationship sometimes. Stay safe.

I remember when i started driving for fedex as a simple delivery driver. The stress you're under when you first drive commercially can get pretty high, and it wasn't even a big truck! Always grateful for the truckers that work long hours to make sure I get my needs met

I started driving cross country in 1985 and made an excellent living doing it. I use to bring home around two grand a week after taxes back in the 1990's and loved what I did but then they changed the hours of service and my pay dropped drastically. That's when I said it's time to retire and it was the best decision I could have made. Absolutely no regrets!

It's basically impossible to drive cross country now. You might find a very high-paying load from CA to PA, but good luck finding a load back to the West coast where the rates are higher

I’ll never be a truck driver, but kudos to all those people who drive trucks to keep the country going!

I've done the job before. Although I really enjoyed driving a truck I can honestly say the job sucked. Some snot nosed dispatcher telling you that you need to keep driving even though you're dog tired....Bosses who don't really care about you because there always seems to be someone ready to fill the seat if you leave...brutal hours....loneliness....it's a tough life for sure.

This! Some dude never drove a truck but has a degree in logistics doesn’t understand why all your times don’t match perfect. I have to unload and they assume we can do it in about an hour per stop when it usually takes close to 3, and then they don’t know why we can’t take the next load in time

This never works. It just makes JB Hunt happy. They will fill in. And for every O/O that drops out 2 migrants will fill in. It's futile.

Everyone who works is exhausted, everyone who works is underpaid, everyone who works is frustrated🙄

I've got my CLASS A CDL & don't want it anymore. I haven't touched a semi in 2yrs & don't miss it AT ALL. That "Career" is a joke & I had to see it for myself....

My dad drove truck for the majority of my life. I applaud his work ethic but he was only home 3 days a month so I never got to know him. Such a sacrifice for such little return.

​@@GBR9794Yes, true possible. But even if that happens people who do the work need a fair pay and should not be exploited. Kinda regret talking against unions when I was younger. Now when I'm in the workforce it sucks because there's no voice only deadbeat robot esc HR departments.

How was it not mentioned how dangerous it is when you're driving thru a big city and people cut you off. Like dude, that's the safety stop length, if a semi has to slam their breaks with this super short distance, they're rolling over you.

I disagree with that title, truck driving is not the worst job you could have I'm very happy doing what I do and I make pretty damn good money. Truck driving is not for everyone though just like any other job it has its ups and downs. It's important to figure out what field of trucking works best for you, local routes, over the road routes, tanker, flatbed, reefer, dry van, logging trucks tow trucks, cement trucks, dump trucks, car haulers, take your pick and see what you like.

I'm a truck driver and it's brutal. We work the equivalent of 2 full time jobs every week and get paid less than what everyone else working 1 job gets. Companies will try any trick to avoid paying you.

Julio, the brokers are the biggest problem for owner/ops. They are the ones making the big bucks.

When I was kid, my favorite TV shows were "Moving on", "BJ & the Bear" and movies like Smokey and the Bandit, Whiteline Fever. I wanted to be a truck driver when I grew up. It was the heyday for truckers in the 70's. Needless to say, I made a career out of the Military instead, now recently retired. Nowadays, I get stressed just towing my 30' camper in heavy traffic. I can't imagine what Truckers go through. Thank you all you guys (and gals) for keeping America moving.

I’m a retail pharmacist and I thought my job has gotten shitty. Now I don’t feel so bad.

First the truckers and now the rail road workers, these mega corporations need to stop stealing wages.

Recently I finally spoke up about being dispatched overweight loads, and even brought up racial issues I’d been facing. The big boss said come on in with your issues. My manager had been on vacation which I now believe was possibly an unpaid suspension. Anyway, I decided I would bring my issues up with my bosses boss. Bad idea, I was suspended then fired. I was hoping I could make change before I looked for a different place to work. I now realize change will not happen in my remaining career. I cannot fkn wait to get out of trucking. Companies abuse us. Take us for granted, and expect us to take it with a smile and not think about it while we are going down the road.

As a truck driver and an independent contractor trucking is what u make of it 🤷🏻‍♂️ u can make six figure or close to it pretty easily and be ur own boss. Being gone is the nature of the job. If the jobs not paying don't do it, it's that simple I refuse work all the time when it's not paying right no matter if I need the money or not

I was a truck driver for years and i loved each miles of it , The drive, the truck, the skills to operate and park. But it became too stressful on long distances and hours, driving at night was not an option for me . I decided to drive locally, i found a job for the local builders driving , got into light lifting cranes, within a year i had time to time to get my mobile crane operator license, Worked well for few years and i changed of country , changed of life and not driving a truck.

I'm proud of the courage and hard workmanship these truckers embrace . I hope they received everything they are owed and are not cheated out of wages and respect for the efforts they put out.

I got 3M miles over the road as a owner operator I was stuck abroad during Covid the state of Minnesota pulled my CDL after 40 years because I was unable to get a DOT physical. I said enough is enough I didn’t bother retesting again the pay isn’t worth it I’m done with trucking.

Those mega carriers offering “training” in exchange for a year of low pay or pay up if you leave early is the reason I opted out of getting my class A without paying for school. Ended up getting my class B with a school district with next to nothing spent on my training and no contract. Going to work as a bus driver that pays just about what entry level truckers make that do OTR work all while doing it in a bus. Trucking is where I want to go, but not as a slave to a big company that cares less about you.

Farming ,truck driving , and retail work. Highly under valued by society. Yet so important !!!

I was a truck mechanic and driver....the regulations got ridiculous and they pulled you over every chance they got ...or pull you in a rest stop weigh your rig hand you more tickets....phucking brutal half the time. Canada driving was brutal because they had weigh stations built into the highway...when lights flashing you better pull your ass in there.

Deregulation isn’t always a good deal for the worker. Only for the companies.

The cost of trucking has also grown exponentially. In 2008, when the EPA started coming down hard on diesels, it drove costs through the roof. What used to be a filter, similar to a catalytic converter, is now a complex system that add cost of manufacture, cost of DEF, cost of maintenance and cost of repairs. And oftentimes, are actually detrimental to the performance of the vehicle.

@@keithdomin5015 The diesel engines of 20 years ago were dead simple, and dead reliable. You had a fuel pump, which acted like your distributor on a gas car, but instead of sending out spark, it sent out fuel. The more fuel it sent out, the more power you could get. Tuning was relatively simple, and easy enough for a local handyman to do. Now you need specialized components to such an extent, that if you dont have the troubleshooting software, your truck aint gonna move. Macks have a huge problem with their coolant level sensors. If the sensor goes out, it puts the truck in derate. If your coolant goes too low, it goes into derate. It doesnt tell you on the dash to check your coolant, it just shuts the engine off.

In my company our fleet of 10 2015 Mack trucks have the engine lights always on, they get fixed, and then a month later, it's back on. It's always an emissions component issue. One driver filled up the DEF tank with diesel on his truck accidentally, which rendered it inoperable and melted the exhaust system. So they got it emissions deleted and put it back in service, I took that truck as soon as it was deleted and it's the only truck that never has problems, and uses less fuel and has more power.

@@brandonfriesen5389 which is the truly messed up thing, is something that's meant to make the air cleaner, causes more diesel to be burnt. we got a brand new 2021 mack in, and just for kicks, wanted to see what the exhaust backpressure was. at idle, it was 5psi. in your car, it should be 0.5-1.5 depending on the car. my truck is 0.75 pre-cat, 0 after cat. to have 5psi means the truck has to work that much harder just to run

Similar problems are visible in Europe. I thought to try working in the US as a truck driver, but after I carefully read the contract like 3 years to work in one company or pay for breaking the contract I decided to not risk that much with a company I've never heard about again.

Part 2........ When you come to a stop to eat take a shower use the bathroom... Or you're waiting for your next load or your next destination..... When the truck has to have maintenance..... Or you get a flat tire..... You are not being paid.... You're not paid a lot in trucking to begin with...... if you're out on the road and you sleep overnight in the truck you're not paid for sleeping overnight in the truck..... And you might spend month after month out on the road that's why nobody likes to do 48 state OTR which means over the road.. You might see America but it isn't going to be the part of America that you want to go see.... By the time you're through subtracting all the time that you're not getting paid the amount of money that you are paid starts to look pretty damn sad and like the lady said..... Your absolutely right. So heavily regulated and demanding to keep that truck rolling. Everyone around the trucking industry seems to be doing extremely well like the brokers, insurance agents, and I swear I see at least one brand new Loves TS pop up, at least one a month. All while I feel I can't make ends meet and don't have a life to go home to because I really dont have a home. It's just so worth it to make such a satisfying life for everyone else.

you get paid only for book miles,nothin for deadhead of25% a year .Getting a tire change can cost you$400,and you face company drivers that get paid nothing but minimum wage and have to live 325 days a year on the road. as a job slaves do better

Just a by stander that has been looking about getting into it the last few weeks with a lot of reading up. Just curious as to why you are struggling to make ends meet? Are you a O.O or work for someone? Do you have your own authority. What do you haul, what area are you normally working out of?

I watched the video started fairly but seemed to sympathize with the anti mask rally and I read some comments and it sparked me. I'm sorry but I want to keep this brief and will be my final comment. A lot of companies will promise unbelievable amounts to drive their trucks but in the end it is a gamble. Like I mentioned from a news email from my factoring company Walmart was pushing to increase their driver pay to like 130k a year due to driver shortages. Sounds petty nice. I have been a company diver, lease driver, and I have been operating under my own authority for 8 years now. I have been through some bad deals. For example I worked for CR England for 2 months including training and started their lease purchase program and by the end of month 2 I ended up owing them more than I had made so I bailed. 8 years later I was in a class action lawsuit I thought would go nowhere I was rewarded like 1900 bux due to how bad they screwed their lease drivers. My sister worked for Prime here recently and she seemed pretty happy with them but they do have a 63 MPH governor on their trucks. She did a lease for them. She still left them so IDK why or the situation if she was making so much why leave you know. I wish you the best of luck but remember this industry is a gamble especially now with fuel prices doing what they are doing. I can't find any place less than 5 a gallon in the state of Oklahoma. My load rates have not increased so it is at a cost to me. Mind you the roads and how bad of a condition they are in as well. Bad roads destroy big heavy trucks. It is nothing like a smaller passenger vehicle hitting a pot hole. These trucks are expensive and all the vibrations from bad roads vibrate and expose wiring which inhave had problems with on a 2015 model. I have spent just over 11k in repairs due to electrical shorts since I bought this truck about 3 years ago. There is much more but that is where I will leave it.

With all the hoops to jump through, the hatred from the people, and the lousy pay, I’m glad I stopped driving. I don’t regret quitting, and never will.

@@extremedrivr It's really bad along i-71/i-75.

I started off as an over the road truck driver for MS Carriers back in 1998. When Swift took over the company I quit. At MS Carriers we got a $100 bonus each time we went into NYC. That ended when Swift bought the company in 2001. I left two days later. A $1200 a week job amounts to $7.95 per hour when you factor in how many hours you are in that truck. I can not recommend to anyone to remain in that industry. The way you are treated makes it not worth it.

I'm a retired truck driver I started back in the early 1970s. Back then you could make a good living. After deregulation the money started to go downhill. Trucking companies were going out of business daily. By the time the industry got really bad there no way I could afford to train for any other job without losing every thing. I was forced to retire in 2019 with severe arthritis. All those years of loading and unloading trailers without rest and being forced to make appointments took a toll on my body.

This is where the "trick" is..... I drove long-haul for 22 years - 18 of those years I lived in my truck. This can only really work if you are single. I never had a rent or mortgage payment for 18 years and managed to bank a nice amount of cash ! Of course, you have to adjust to living in a space the size of a closet, but I was always warm in the winter and cool in the summer - all on the company's dime. I had a regular routine, had a shower every day or every other day and my home terminal had washer and dryers for laundry. This is a career where you need to work SMARTER and learn how to make the most of what you have. I've been retired since 2017 and don't miss it at all. Glad that I found the best options.

OH the trucking company wants drivers out there for MONTHS at a time and all that rent money totally wasted. thrown away for a place to store stuff and visit once in a while, get a good nights sleep, do laundry, get food and prep to go back out after

I am a company driver, for a large carrier ,I eaern around 86,000 a year . I don't have to pay for any operating expenses and I'm home 3 to 4days a week so I'm doing ok as a trucker making more money than many college graduates.

Agree that being company driver pays descent considering gas, truck, vacation days, sick days, holiday pay and benefits are included for most. As a company driver in Canada, I get paid 50% more than what I was as a retail manager in medium sized company plus I receive $4K per year from tax refund for just meal allowance (but I don’t buy food on the road so government pays for my grocery bills lol)

@@dominickjustave3558 I live 5 miles from a Walmart DC. They offered me that, plus up to $115k a year. Talking to a few WM drivers off the record, I would be micro managed non stop. Get a ticket, and you're gone! Get an equipment violation at a scale, you're gone! Another Walmart see's you not wearing your seatbelt, you're gone! The money is real!! Just not worth the BS. I'll stick with my small company of 22 trucks, and not have to be on a leash. I make $55k a year, and take the winter months off. (December-April) I deal directly with the owner of the company, or his son. Our trucks are Pete's or Kw's set to run 78mph. As you can see, the extra money isn't worth it.

Generating income is an action but keeping money is a behaviour" During time's like this it's proven to be a difficult challenge.💯💯

never happen, too much cheap labour in the market. trucking companies just churnn thru drivers... 2-6 months... every month churn thru drivers. no bid deal it is part of the bizness. pppl get into it to make the $50,000 a YEAR!!!! and then realize they need to be out there a month straight and work 18 hours a day so dont get fired... which many do as they wont RUN (illegally) as it is not worth the liability to the driver if have accident, even if not the truck drives fault ... the company/lawyers/ accident will make it the drivers fault and he is fired and never get hired to drive again and as a bonus the drivers PERSONAL car insurance goes UP UP UP UP if have incident with big truck.

Truck drivers MUST stop blindly supporting politicians and business men that keep screwing them up over and over.

A big reason for the bad conditions are Owner/operators - if You're turning down a load because it pays to bad, they turn to the next until someone in need of money accepts...

I think the convoys messaging in what they wanted to protest was vague and disorganized. Like the video states, many COVID restrictions were loosen when the convoy began so many probably didn’t see the main point in supporting the protest; plus the convoy kinda morphed into a pro trump-like-rally to Washington DC where half the country probably lost support for the convoy and perceived it as a nuisance.

Yep, my father joined in protest one time. He said it was mostly nut jobs that wanted to sit around and have a pity party. Then they all went back to work like it never happened. He said he never met a happy company driver; but met plenty of happy decent owner operators. He compared it to living next to a home owner vs living next to a renter.

I agree with every word. However, truckers aren't all innocence and goodness either. There is a LOT of bad on the trucker side that the advocates intentionally overlook. If you drove for over 5 years, you know what I'm talking about. As far as I am concerned, KARMA has struck trucking.

And the ironic thing is they say oh well just bring in illegals to do the job but the problem is is that in the last administration they went out of their way to prevent that and then the current administration is all wishy-washy about everything so the bigger question is who's going to drive these trucks ones these old men retire or die?

If you're not in the market to go to your bank and ask for $150,000 loan to buy a new truck, you shouldn't be in the market for a lease purchase.

I could have walked away scott free from my lease purchase if I wasn't making it for aney reason. Only had $500.00 to my name when I got it, and no good credit. Need to organize these companies join the teamsters! I was a truck driver for 29 years a union driver and they had rules they had to follow, organized fellows organize! Get respect back in to being a truck driver!

"Most truck drivers quit after 6 months." Ha ha ha! I was fired after 3 months. I'm also in crazy amounts of debt. $6,000 for truck driving school. $6,000 for a car that got reposessed. That bank sued me twice. I'm also barred from taking out new loans due to delinquencies. My credit score went free 720 to 400 in an instant. It's currently at 520, but I still won't qualify for a loan because I've been black-listed.

If you don't mind me asking, why were you fired?

Im 23 and have been trucking for only a couple years. Personally i love the job itsself. Traveling, better money than i ever made before, and with that the ability to take care of my wife and our son. Unfortunately i did miss out on the days of outlaw truckers and my only glimpse of it is through my uncle. Despite everything wrong with the industry right now, i hope to be able to keep driving till i cant drive a truck any more or there are no trucks left to drive. Thank you to all you truckers out there that despite it all still take pride in what you do. There are many out there that dont and play a part in ruining the industry.

I tried it for about two weeks. Worst job I ever had. I actually did the math. I was basically working 12-18 hr days (or longer) five days a week for what basically amounts to $3/hr. Long hours punctuated by a few hours of hard labor. Plus, your company basically forces you to break dot rules to stay on the roads and keep working, even if you're over your hours.

On the road up to 20 days at a time? 😂😂😂 I can't remember the last time I was only on the road for 20 days more like 20 weeks!!

Started back in 1985 and in 2000 I quit trucking as a full time career and got a job with my city's transit authority . Great pay , overtime, benifits, awesome pension but boring AF job.

@J Hemphill really miss trucking tho, been doing a little occasionally on days off and sometimes on a few vacations weeks (got 6 weeks vacations). Thinking of going back trucking on a part time basis in 2 years when I retire. We'll see.

Being a company driver is absolutely awful, but then going out on your own and keeping 100% of what you make is where trucking becomes a great thing. I really feel for all the company drivers out there working their ass off for 1/10th of what their company makes for their hard work on each delivery. There absolutely needs to be change

This is true. I began trucking in January. This upcoming month will be my last month of doing OTR. I would leave right away, but I need a good reference… Long hours, many unaccounted unpaid work hours, low pay, no holiday extra pay, horrendous work/life balance. Not worth all of these cons to continue trucking. These DOT officers don’t help either. Instead of helping truckers, they’re more of a pain than help.

It depends on what you do in truck driving. I'm a local driver home every day. I get thirty two dollars an hour. Work 50 Hours a week, sometimes a little more and i'm usually grossing 1800 to 2000. Truck driving is still a great job. Very easy to get into. A lot of companies still pay for your training.

Truckers in Europe share many of the same struggles... Long ours and low pay... Deregulation ruins everything...

I own a drywall business and one thing that pisses me off is when people don't know the process try to tell you how to do it. In other words, you can't say what a trucker should earn if you never trucked before. You can't just put laws and regulations into effect when you don't know what truckers go through on a daily basis. How can you have a say in anything if you never have stepped foot into a truck
