WORST RATED Hotel - The Grand Hotel, Llandudno
I stay in The Grand Hotel In Llandudno, North Wales owned by Britannia Hotels and it's the ninth consecutive year that Britannia has come bottom of the pile in the annual survey by consumer group Which? It's received some very bad reviews on Tripadvisor and some bad press over the last 12 months, BUT is it as bad as some people say? Let's find out!

I've said this before, but these old Grand Hotels are just too big with too many rooms. Back in the day when labour was a lot cheaper, they would probably have had hundreds of staff looking after the building and guests. They just can't do that now. I also dread to think what the cost would be to completely renovate such a large hotel, it is probably not even economically viable! I don't fully understand why Britannia even buy them, or what their long term intention is! Great review though, and yes, Llandudno is a truly lovely place😀

I stayed at this hotel many years ago when I was a child and it was absolutely stunning. We had a room at the front with a balcony, and we dined half board. From what I can remember we had a really great time. Such a shame to see it in the state it is now. Be nice if someone with the money could revamp it. Keep the videos coming.

It actually pains me to see such beautiful buildings like this in states like that. It would take alot of money to fix all of the damp issues and companies won't put that kind of money into them these days. A lick of paint would do wonders for it. That room with a new coat of paint, box of that pipe, clean the windows and fix the bed would do me for a weekend or a few days stay. It's such a shame
Why are Britannia allowed to even operate as a company?
I said Britannia straight away and saw I was right with the soap. Someone needs to buy them out and do up all their hotels! They have some hotels with massive potential on their books!
It used to be such an iconic hotel with a brilliant setting, I remember boats to the Isle of Man pulling into the pier, worked near the little orme and in those days Llandudno was the place to holiday, the town is still worth a visit and a great gateway to snowdonia
It's a shame to see how this once vibrant hotel has decayed over the years. I remember watching a documentary on this hotel back in the day and it looked really nice.....the carpet in the lift on the wall was known as shag carpets, they were the bee's knees back in the early 70's 👌
I stayed here for one night last July. It looks even worse now than when I stayed. I had a twin room which had a sea view which was stunning, but when I opened the balcony door there was a used nappy shoved up the corner. It's such a shame, because this hotel would be amazing if it only was shown 'a lot' of love.

It heartbreaking to see these beautiful buildings left in such a state. I’ve stayed in quite a few of these places and they’re pretty much the same story.
I'm more and more wondering what the story is behind these Britannia hotels. The impression I get for each of them is that _someone_ along the chain of responsibility cares about getting it back into shape, but they're not getting the (financial?) support they need for structural works, so they can't do much more than patching things up here and there. Perhaps it would be interesting to do a "the story behind" sort of video at some point, and dive into where the problem lies?
@RushfanUK
Жыл бұрын
Nobody cares, the company is run by one man only, they have huge staffing and management turnover, carry out surface renovations but never really deal with issues such as roofs and structure which is why so often you see damp everywhere, all that matters is making a profit any way possible. Things like the linen trolleys and equipment being left out is because when they take over a hotel they will quite often turn storage rooms and linen rooms into guest bedrooms to squeeze as much out of a building as possible, as an environment to work in it very quickly sucks the life out of you as you are constantly battling the lack of staff and guest dissatisfaction.

The Daily Mail did an article about the owner this year, Alex Langsam. Horrifying.
The Grand has been revamped several times over the decades - it's a great location in a beautiful town - but keeping on top of such a large sea-edge hotel seems to be beyond the means of the current owners. I sympathise with them a bit, but the costs of an effective programme of building management would surely be offset by the higher-than-average room rates this hotel could command.
I think you should contact the Britannia group when you've done all their hotels and presentation outside their headquarters because this is ridiculous what they are doing to these buildings
Many, many years ago, when I was a kid, my mum always packed a bottle of bleach and a bottle of disinfectant when we went on holiday because she did not trust anybody elses cleaning standards, regardless of where we stayed. It seems taking both bleach and disinfectant with you would definately be a good idea if you had the misfortune of finding yourself staying in a Britannia owned hotel or holiday park.

20:31 you had it spot on, they used to be so grand but no one cares. But the sad part is that these hotels could be grand once again. With the correct owner who actually wants to put the money into these hotels, they could be restored to beautiful classic hotels. This hotel in particular is somewhere I would love to stay simply due to its stunning views, but under Britannia ownership I wouldn't even think about even stepping through the door.
The squeaking door just after he said the hotel feels spooky 🤣
I was in Llandudno for a day trip with my sister and she showed me this hotel which she'd stayed in the past. We went onto one of the balconies where Tim went. It was extremely hot that day and the sea view was magnificent. When I went to the bar I noticed how old everything was and even if new it would still look awful as the hotel is very tired looking. It needs a complete overhaul. But bet they can't afford it! We went down to the ground floor overlooking the sea and it was quite shabby with a cheap and nasty looking cafe! I wouldn't stay there if they paid me! We then went to view another hotel further down from The Grand looking onto the promenade. The St George's hotel a very upmarket hotel completely immaculate. So different and more my style any day! We peaked into the dining room and they had the most wonderful setting with damask covered chairs and tables. That is how a real hotel should look! They also had their coffee afternoon tea section which to our disappointment was fully booked! Superb decor and if you check out their rooms online you'll be stunned by the quality! So if I stay over in this resort I'll be staying here for my creature comforts. and it is literally 1/2 a mile from the Grand Hotel.
I stayed here in December 2011 as a "baby moon" before our 4th child (called Tim!) was born. It certainly wasn't this bad then. I know I had one of the cheapest rooms and it had an enormous bathroom, complete with bath. I spent several happy days there relaxing by the sea. How sad to see what a decade of bad management can wreak.

This used to be a hotel owned by Billy Butlin. Yes, grand in its day, but that was a good few years ago. Originally, it would have had next to no ensuite rooms, which is something everyone expects nowadays, even in the cheapest rooms. Hence the additional pipework. The hotel must been adapted many times since it opened. Good honest assessment of the facilities. You brought all the right things to light. Those windows were disgusting. I stayed in Llandudno a few years ago. I stayed at The Imperial. It was somewhere I'd always wanted to stay at and had a good tariff at the time. Maybe you could compare the two.
In the 90s I worked for a building company and we renovated the entire 4th floor in those days it catered for oap type holidays and was fully booked most of the year we were there about 5 weeks and that room you had was my room while I worked there ,it hasn't changed one bit!!😵💫👌
Reminds me of one of those abandoned places visited by urban explorers. Only it's still in use. Shocking!
I remember having a holiday in Llandudno as a child with my parents; We didn't stay in hotels, but ordinary well kept boarding houses that were simple yet neat clean, tidy and cheaper than hotels. We had some wonderful holidays without the expense of hotels.
Hi Tim! Im currently fighting the flu so binge watching your videos as I rest. My mum, uncle and nan stayed at this hotel in 2016 and said the same: extremely grubby. Hope you and your family are well! Happy holidays!
We were in Llandudno this week (thankfully at another hotel) and were intrigued what this beautiful but clearly neglected hotel was like inside, thanks for the insight and hopefully saving others from booking there.
Love this series. Thanks!!
I was very surprised to not hear you talk about how this used to be a Butlins Holiday Hotel. After Butlins decided to just concentrate on the camps, they sold the hotels to a company called Grand Hotels Limited who were subsequently bought out by Britannia. The Blackpool Metropole and Grand Hotel Scarborough were also old Butlins hotels and it doesn't seem they have changed much since then. Sadly the best 2 Butlins hotels, Ocean Hotel Brighton and Grand Hotel Margate, are both long gone with the former being luxury apartments and the later having being knocked down to build flats (an absolute scandal as it was an iconic building!). It would be cool to see you do a tour of all the remaining ex-Butlins hotels.
When stayed at hotels there was always staff buzzing around, cleaning , changing bedware, etc. I didn't see anyone in this hotel. As someone else mentioned this hotel was built when the dozens of staff needed were cheap. And today the only staff that would still be cheap has gone away and stays away; East European EU cititzens.
Very interesting video as always! Has any employee / manager ever seen their hotel featured on your 'worst rated' series and commented?

Such a beautiful old building and tragic to see it being neglected
With regards to the damp; it’s hardly surprising given its proximity to the sea. In winter the whole hotel must be deluged in seawater almost constantly. That and the fact that it’s north Wales so will be incessantly raining in winter.
I love Llandudno, from childhood holidays and later trips, but I'd never seen inside the Grand Hotel despite admiring it from afar: thanks for such a thorough, balanced exploration. What a magnificent building, cruelly neglected. I well remember this standard of fittings and decor from cheap hotels in the 70s, but it's shocking to think what these surface indications say about the deep decay of the hotel itself. And in that location it could be so wonderful.
I’ve just started watching your channel. I’m enjoying it. Please can you include what the night’s sleep is like, noise etc as I’ve found in some places this can be a problem you don’t realise until it’s too late! Thank you. 😀
I last stayed in that place in 1984, can even remember the room number 321. It was before Britannia took it over, it was owned by trust house forte. It seems from your video, it's as bad now as it was then. Nothing seems to have changed, it remains dated, grotty and neglected. If the right owners had that hotel, it could be turned into a stunning place, taking advantage of its stunning location
i love llandudno - was there on business - this hotel looks amazing- if you cant see that - well - oh dear
The tap is a stopcock to turn the water off. Great video by the way. The room is tiny for the money. You did not miss much by not having the breakfast it's quite expensive for what you get.
About half of the problems could be quickly fixed at next to no cost. Clean the windows, wipe down the dirty walls, touch up some of the paint. As-is, I would NOT take a room for FREE! As always, Tim’s video is excellent. What a pleasant and respectable person you are. no ripped jeans, ear rings, tattoos, and no sensationalism at all. You fit in everywhere and dress appropriately too!
While it is sad to see how these old historic building are falling into disrepair and Brittanias mismanagement is worsening their decline, I think it was honestly inevitable for many of these buildings with or without Brittania. Seaside location and old huge buildings are always going to end in destruction unless massive amounts of cash are injected to their upkeep, which might not be a sound investment for most businesses. I certainly think there should be an effort to maintain these buildings (with or without Brittania) but unfortunately the fiscal reality of that is grim these days

I have stayed at the Cliffs several times over the years but, never again. It would make an interesting review for you.

thanks for the tip
I've stayed there recently - it was literally the cheapest hotel in town when I booked, and it wasn't too bad keeping that in mind.

@@WalkWithMeTim Sadly not, was going there on a budget and ended up with one over the front entrance. I did make sure to grab a drink or two and sit on the hotel bar balcony though, that was a good spot.

I agree , if it was the cheapest then it's not so bad, after all, it's a bed for the night, if not immaculate, I can live with that if the price is right.

@@bernardcassidy6497 You also get a very central location & the hotel bar balcony, which is definitely one of the best views in town. Even if my next trip to Llandunno has a higher budget I'd still consider it over other hotels for those reasons, despite the real problems highlighted in this video.
Great video again. I have often wondered about staying in a sea view balcony room at this hotel when walking on the pier, and those views are fantastic, but now no way. Just wonder if you slept well?

I did not stay in that room lol
I love Llandudno ❤, i stay at a lovely little B&B near that Hotel, omg it looks yukky🙈, such a shame as it is a Grand Old Building,it does need upgrading for sure, but there is NO EXCUSE for grubby rooms 🤮! Sack the cleaner's, ask the Manager would he/she be happy to stay there? No way! Ty for sharing ❤ it needs Alex Polizzi on the case! I would be walking right back out the main reception door!
This hotel looks bloody awful on the outside I can’t wait to see what it looks like on the inside lol !! Such a shame that Llandudno is a beautiful place but there’s no amazing hotels
Thank you for this Tim. I have always wondered about this hotel. You've covered it succinctly. Absolutely disgusting. I'd rather stay at Pontins Prestatyn!!!!

I love Llandudno and visit often as it isn’t far from where I live, I often park by the Grand so it’s really interesting to see it inside! Such a shame it’s fallen to such low standards - the windows, damp and endless laundry items are disturbing. Just how many hotels do Britannia own? They seem pretty damn useless. Great and very fair review Tim.
Stunning building and a shame to see it a bit neglected, but like you said looks like they are trying to improve it. You’ve made me want to go to Llandudno, looks lovely.
The place clearly started out as a borderline luxury hotel but they've obviously let it fall apart. It's a shame. Fix it up and clean it up and you can use it as an old school theme based hotel where you play into its age.

I don't think that scaffolding is there for repairs. I think it's holding the entire building together.

Great video Tim you deserve a medal.😁😁😘😘
We was going to stay here about 10 years ago , the bloke on reception said I’ll show you a room before you decide which I thought was strange . 10 seconds of seeing it I was leaving , he must of know we wouldn’t like it and that was his way of telling us. If you’re in Llandudno on a weekend break a hotel like this can ruin your trip better off at a bnb much smaller and easier to maintain. These huge old hotels aren’t fit for purpose really , imagine this in another 10 years time it will need knocking down. Good fair review as always
I stayed here with my family (around 20 plus members) in 2003. Had the worst time ever as the hotel had the norovirus. We all caught it. That’s my reason for never forgetting this hotel from hell. Knock it down it’s a joke it’s still around. It’s demonic.
