Worst Rated Hotel - Sachas Hotel, Manchester
I stay in Sachas Hotel, Manchester owned by Britannia Hotels and it's the Tenth consecutive year that Britannia has come bottom of the pile in the annual survey by consumer group Which?
It's received some very bad reviews on Tripadvisor and some bad press over the last 12 months, BUT is it as bad as some people say? Let's find out!

Is this a recent thing? I used to stay there 20 years ago for training courses and it was ok - they were still Britannia back then? Maybe before they wore it down ... I remember at the time I had the choice to the Britannia or Sacha's as we had an account with them, but the Britannia was right next door ...

It would have been interesting to see what the other guests' room was like - the one who said it "stinks". It seems there were two sides to that place - the side the upgraded you to and the side where you said it didn't smell so great. I think you under estimate how known you are. Remember if any of the staff have even the slightest interest in their profession they are likely to at least know of the usual people - like yourself - who are around. Even if they don't there may well be some kind of off the books policy that people there from a company (therefore known not to be a reviewer) will get the slums while others get the refurb stuff. Its very coincidental the guy in the lift wasn't impressed and was from a company yet you and the next door both got free upgrades. You're going to have to start turning up on spec and wearing a fake moustache like that bloke from allo allo.

You’ve not had the full Sachas experience without a double windowless room. You’ve literally no idea what time or day it is. Everyone seems to have some memories of this place. For me it was getting lost and stumbling into a service room with mouldy plates covering the floor. There was also a young lady with a glass eye snorting coke by the entrance at 2am. It’s like a portal to the weirdest parallel dimension…

With my job I’m away twice or once a week depending on rota and we always get booked into a travel lodge. Some are nice, some are a little tired. Some are quiet, some are noisy. One bank holiday in 2021 I had to stay in a premier inn. The difference was astounding, it had a/c, the bed and pillow was like a cloud. That was a one off 😂 Some travel lodges have a/c but are far and few between. Bracknell has and Donington services has too 😂 I will say in every TL the bedding and towels are always clean, and if you’re lucky the kettle will be too 😂

Oh my days, I used to work here about 30 years ago as Assistant Night Manager. Back then, the place was always busy with functions. Hotel security had an office three floors under street level. Anyone misbehaved during functions. Security would take them to the room to await the police. Jenny's Restaurant was a busy pizzeria, and next to Jenny's was a French themed restaurant that they tried to focus on fine dining. I remember the nightclub called Saturdays that was linked to the hotel. The internal rooms were always embarrassing, so even then, we would upgrade where we could. We were given quite a lot of discretion about upgrades, discounts etc. Best thing about working here was having access to the roof where it was nice to spend your rest break. The views across the city then were amazing.

hi also used to work there as an assistant night manager, the night club (fight club!!) was just full of thugs and gangs. had a terrible time trying to keep that from spilling out and finding it's way upstairs don't remember a night when it didnt. most nights had to call the police myself and other staff being threatened and physically abused and the residents as well, not the best of places to work that's for sure, nice to see that they have removed all the stuffed animals including "sascha" the polar bear that was the first thing you saw on entering the hotel! the best bit was after the fight club closed we could all go down to the pizzeria and get a pizza pile on what ever we fancied, best pizza ever.

Whilst any bad hotel is usually down to poor upkeep I genuinely think they wouldn't be so bad if the guests looked after the fittings as they should. You imagine how many pissed up people stay in city centre hotels and don't really care how they behave.....worth considering.
Another good "worst" review. I like the fact that you don't slate the hotels just for the sake of it, but do mention the positives as well. I suppose the most worrything though is how many of them are owned by Britannia....

Just as a side note to your video, this hasn't always been a hotel. This building used to be a C & A clothes store before the firm closed its stores in the UK. You may or may not remember C & A. Their clothes were branded with the 'Canda' label. Older viewers will remember it well and may even still have some of their clothes in the back of the cupboard. In 2000, due to competition from Tesco and ASDA, and to expanding high street names such as H&M, Zara and Topshop, C & A announced its withdrawal from the British market, where it had been operating since 1922. I (very politely) complained that the sink in the bathroom took over 15 minutes to drain and asked if they might be able to get someone have a look at it. They offered to move us to another room instead, which we politely declined because the bathroom was even worse and the room lacked the secondary glazing that made our original one acceptable - Gray's Inn Road can hardly be considered quiet and it wasn't very warm either. I definitely found it odd that adjacent rooms were so different, some with decent secondary glazing, others only with the single-glazed aluminium windows (gold anodised) from the 60s or whenever the place was built.

As someone that has secondary employment in a hotel, if you cannot operate the bottom lock on the door at all, it is usually a feature of the lock that it automatically double-locks when the door is shut (therefore it appears broken). There's a pin which activates the lower bolt when the door is closed in to the frame. In my opinion it defeats the object of having a deadlock, but our lock provider says they are proven to be so secure that no extra bolt is required. As long as hotel staff know what they are doing when handing keys out there is no issue. Take from that what you will.
The hotel used to have a full sized stuffed polar bear on the plinth by the stairs that go up into the reception and in the downstairs bar/restaurant they also had swordfish and a shark mounted on the walls. Never found out why.

Love ALL your content mate. Love it. Lived in England for years. Great Yarmouth, East Anglia area mostly but travelled through a lot. Feels like home. Miss it. Thank you for your unbiased and real reviews.

thanks for watching Derrek
I have stayed there in a windowless room. There was some sort of extraction fan in the ceiling, the type you would expect to see in a bathroom, and it was noisey! There wasn't a switch to turn it off, presumably because of the room being windowless and it may help with air circulation? Sachas does serve a purpose to a solo traveller who doesn't want to pay the usual Manchester City Centre prices, some being £200 or more. Trivelles in Salford is far worse than this. Tim should have a look at Trivelles Salford. 👍
How can a hotel have windows that do not close. Hearing the outside noise at night would drive me mad. I hope they can sort that out..I d hate to think what a standard room is like. Thankyou Tim
Another interesting video Tim, and always good to see you stop and acknowledge the fans. Merry Christmas!

@@WalkWithMeTim Yes, the group of fans you met down one of the corridors, the one legged air heads, but not very chatty!
Sacha's was originally the C&A department store, Britannia bought the building and turned it into a hotel hence the internal rooms without windows.
I can't believe you were in Manchester and didn't do a review of 'The Gardens' hotel in Piccadilly Gardens. It makes this place look like The Ritz. I always used to stay in The Gardens when I was younger and traveling to football matches a lot, but I'd certainly not want to go back there now. The entrance alone is enough to set the alarm bells ringing! Well worth checking out if you're ever back in the city.

Wow I loved the tour! It was more like a tour through an old building lost in time rather than your typical hotel review 👏🏻. I loved the old gym and the swimming pool rooms with the flashing lights, very creepy. Absolutely love these type of expeditions

I'm from Bury, so just outside Manchester and I've walked past this hotel hundreds of times. I've been dying for years to know what it's like inside, cause of all the locals horror stories. It did not disappoint 🤣🤣

Wasn't that bad was it ? 🤔
'Straight out of The Shining", yet he still gives it 2/5. _Something_ was good about it in his view. "The hotel's demons kept trying to drive me insane, but the heated towel rails were nice."
The way they say "without windows" make it sound like you have to pay extra to see the outside world. Next they'll be charging for a door
This place gives me the impression that you're walking around an old ocean liner, but it's not been refitted since the early 1900s.
in my younger days Sachas was always known as the kind of place that you could go to if you had 'bumped in to' someone on a night out in town and didn't want to go home, as they always had cheap rooms and was right in the centre and easy to escape to get the bus at Piccadilly gardens the morning after.....
It seems such a shame to let hotels get into this sad state. The swimming pool area was so creepy & the corridors,I certainly eouldnt want to walk around them on my own.Thank you for your honest review! I wouldnt stay there though.

I got baptized in the swimming pool and have stayed here on another occasion wasnt to bad for the price aha
I've slept in B&Bs and Hotels up and down the Country and they were I'd rate from Excellent to Dire but I also slept rough for over a year in the North East when I was 16 and any accomodation however bad and basic beats a cardboard box in a shop doorway in Winter.
This was really relaxing 😂 Came up on my recommended videos and now I'm hooked!

You should try the Easy Hotel in Luton....No opening windows at all, some rooms have no windows at all,not even a bin in the room never mind a kettle.....weird smells around the place...😄
I stayed here around 2010ish and omg what a nightmare, we booked thinking wow so close to the city center, only to find the rooms with bugs all over, we got moved to another room and still same issue but this room had a hot tub bath I did not want to get in. How this hotel isn't shut down after all these years I'll never know.
I walked past this place everyday for years. Always looked spooky. Never knew people actually stayed there. The best parking is the big outdoor one behind picadilly Station, used to be 1.50 for 24 hours. Probably a bit more now but much better than 50 quid in a multistory
When I stayed there, had an Are You Being Served camp concierge who was almost certainly clinically depressed telling us about how many people off themselves in the rooms. Then we were in a windowless deep interior room that had tragic fire disaster written all over it. Oh what a night.
I came across your channel as it was on my recommended and I’ve now subscribed, safe to say I like your reviews, unbiased and honest

Stayed here when we saw Harry Styles in Manchester this year.. tbh thought it was alright. For being in the city centre price was great. Yeah decor wasn’t great but did us for the night.
Good honest review as always 👍
I worked close to this hotel in the early 2000s and walked past every day. It was one of the cheaper offerings at the time, so tried to book it for my stag do, but it was fully booked. I opted for an even *cheaper* hotel and it was even worse. Shame I can’t remember the name of it.
Fascinating to see your reviews of Sachas and the Britannia. Having been a regular visitor to Manchester for many years, I've used both and Sachas particularly was ideal for the money, with an excellent restaurant so it's sad to see its current state. Possibly rooms without windows is because they were former industrial buildings and internal rooms were necessary to utilise space and make the places viable? Seperately I'd be interested to see your review of another Britannia, the North Stafford opposite Stoke On Trent station. Long ago, when I grew up around there, it was THE place to go...if you could afford it, well you'd really made it. I stayed there a few years ago and was'nt any longer.!
Another great video! - Tim, you mentioned Bed Bugs in your video (from previous experiences) how do you avoid them? / Do you check before you unpack? I recently brought some home from a Hostel visit 😬

Yes I do!
Before it became a hotel it was a department store C+A. Converted into a hotel in the late 80's and had a very successful night club called Sachas. It went down hill when it was bought by Brittania group.

When stayed in the Britannia the door didn’t even close shut. I had to wedge something under the door and put a mug on the handle! I’m just relieved my 4yr old doesn’t tend to wander 😂! Regardless it was a bed and shower for only a few days,so I didn’t mind that much.
I used to work here as a teenager in the late 90's. It appeared quite ornate and it's red and mahogany colours seemed quite OK back then. The chandeliers were well maintained. Although definitely not perfect! The unused bar/restaurant near the gym was a restaurant called "The French" and used to have lovely furniture and was used regularly. The doors you found led to the kitchen, which the waiters and waitresses would use to bring food and plates in and out. In the main restaurant was also a "pizzeria," which was as Italian as Frankie and Bennys is now 😂. Good times working there, such a shame to see it like that now.
This is my new favourite KZread series 😂 I’ve been binge watching so much

You explained yourself why the curtains are stained on the outside, imagine the condensation and or mould those curtains will be absorbing when they're partially exposed to the elements. It doesn't look that bad to be fair; and for 50 quid, well you could do a lot worse! At least it's heated! This is probably their version of a presidential suite though; so I think you should check some of their other rooms out!
I live in Central Manchester and work in the Manchester picadilly Hotel, I always see sachas hotels and too scared to go inside because of the reviews. So im really glad you visited the place as iv heard horrible le tales about the place lol loved this video. But when you work in a 4* hotel such as mine and then visit sachas, sachas Hotel looks more like a hostel lol

Having the pool open like that with no water in seems like a massive hazard
Thanks for another balanced review...sometimes I wonder what people expect for £55, but I think some also have it in for Britannia hotels. There must be some much worse stinkers out there!

I stayed in this hotel in the late 80s, I remember it had a stuffed grizzly bear in the doorway or lobby. It was somewhat of a boutique hotel in those days and was dearer than £55 a night!
Ahh you did sachas! I had to stay here for a week until my new flat tenancy started and it was the cheapest place I could find, I was in one of the centre chamber rooms that has no windows. This place has such a shining vibe to it, I think the room downstairs where they kept the fans used to look different, I went down there and there was no one else there like in the video, and everything was decorated in this same blue/green paisley pattern, the carpets, the wallpaper, the upholstery on the chairs and sofa, everything the same pattern, it has a really weird feeling
I loved this! Thank you for roaming around all of the corners just like I would’ve done.
A lady I knew always stayed in Saschas when on business in Manchester. She could have stayed anywhere so must have liked it. She remarked on the windowless rooms and said they had curtains where a window coulf have been

Not this hotel, but once stayed in a windowless room and it also had curtains like you said. But there was large photograph behind the curtain, which sort of made it seem like you had a beach front room...sort of.
