I'm from Southport and for years the Scarisbrick was regarded as one of the best in town. It was family owned and they took great pride in the place. I got married there in 2010 and everything was fantastic. We couldn't fault a thing. (By the way, the Churchtown Suite was the bridal suite 😁). Sadly the owner, Tony Cafferkey, had passed away the previous year and his family just wanted shot of the place. All was well until around 2011 when they sold it to Britannia Hotels. Unfortunately, the Scarisbrick (pronounced Scares-brick) underwent a huge decline, as do most hotels owned by Britannia. It's now a shadow of its former self and poor Mr Cafferkey must be turning in his grave.

Tony was not the owner he was General manager the lady that owned the hotel lived there up until the day it was sold to britannia which was to down fall of the place

Good as I thought and remembered. I was confused because it had a good reputation, it was supposed to be real good and there was always a wedding on. I know that 30 years ago Maloneys was heaving with revellers you could barely move. No one in Southport missed it off their crawl. That company you mention do all the deals with run down hotels. Went in Prince of Wales recently but not in a room. It didnt look much better. It looked in dire need of some upkeep too. Funny I never ever drank in there.

The last time I was in the Scarisbrick was 2010! I dread to go back then because I have nothing but great memories of the place.

This room is small but has everything you need. Like: - Cobwebs - Light fittings without lights - A door that's clearly been opened with a crowbar - Electrical hazards - Bath with built in bum scratcher - Fresh air whether you want it or not Sounds like a solid deal to me

It's strange how all hotels seem to put chairs in such aimless places where no one would ever want to sit.

Speaking as a maintenance manager who works in a hotel, I don't know how these rooms get sold with these issues. Great video as always Tim.

@fay-amieaspen6046 yeah I've seen Tim's Britania vids mate. The sadistic sod in me likes watching the grimey hotels haha. The Britania in Bham is closest to me and that's a right dive.

I'm stunned because I was in that hotel in the 90's and the celebrities used to stay there. It was an amazing hotel furnished to a very high standard and it was spotlessly clean. They had 24 hour roomservice and a fantastic full English breakfast with black pudding, hashbrowns, fried bread , tomatoes, beans, fried egg, bacon and sausages and there was no room on the plate. The woman who owned it must've retired and sold up because this is definitely not like it was 25 years ago. The car park was at the back of the hotel and it was underground and there was large gates at the back of the car park. Put it this way the radio 1 roadshow was on and all of the acts stayed at the Scarisbrick. Intact it was so good I always said if I stayed in Southport I'd stay at the Scarisbrick. I'm very disappointed.

It was ran by a gentleman called Tony Cafferkey who was the MD. The hotel was his pride and joy, and his standards of excellence were unrivalled. Back when I was growing up, the scarisbrick was the pride and joy of the town. Sadly Mr Cafferkey passed away from cancer in 2009 and the hotel was unfortunately sold to the Britannia group. The demise and deterioration of the hotel has been drastic and sad to see. Britannia group own the Prince of Wales hotel also in Southport, which is a beautiful building with a once impeccable reputation, unfortunately it too has been left to rack and ruin. Southport MP Damien Moore has written to Britannia group asking them to pump some much needed funds into the two sites or to sell up. As yet, I believe there has been no response.

Sadley people grow old and things change, i agree it was very grand back in the day

This one makes me so sad. We spent my mums last holiday here when she was dying of cancer in 1995. It was such a beautiful hotel. I am so sorry its been let into disrepair.

That window is definitely a massive safety issue. The fact a kid could stand on the bed and push the window open and fall.

One thing though Rob, it's a red tag earth clamp, so suitable for dry condintions only, which is evidenced by the ongoing corrosion process. Should be replaced with external blue asap, unless they've upgraded the consumer unit with RCDs/RCBOs for all circuits within the area and just left it there.

As a kid, whenever me & family went on holiday, the first thing I wanted tot do was explore the hotel. Watching your videos, Tim, is like being back in those days.

All these Victorian & Georgian hotels show the previous grandeur but the big issue I see is the cost of upkeep, which has become too much for the owners/operators. The same issue happens to stately homes which then fall into disrepair. These hotels are so interesting. For me a clean bed is the most important thing. Always interesting videos though.

I don't see how you can conclude that the cost of upkeep is the reason - why is it now but not previously? I think it's purely down to the business model of the owners. They wouldn't be operating if they didn't know what they were doing.

@@basylpeterjones I believe that the ingress of dampness due to the building's age is a major issue in these old hotels. The cost to rectify it is prohibitive due to the smaller revenues as the hotel ages. I maybe wrong but I'm glad it brings conversation to the issue.

Lower prices to get guests because the facilities aren't what they used to be = less money to fix the facility=lower prices again= worse conditions.

I noticed that the curtains in your room were actually covering the headboard, makes me wonder if there was a different bed in there before because that's just weird. I was nervous that the window handle was going to fall off when you pushed the window open, couldn't believe how loose it was. You were brave to get into that lift, I wouldn't have trusted it to let me out again!

Ironic that they have a Formby room yet seem unable to clean their windows

Am I the only one a tad freaked out by a loft hatch In the hotel bathroom? Maybe I’ve just watched too many horror films🤷‍♀️

@@davidnm21 like how many other rooms have them, can people climb from one room to another or is their another entrance for staff that any of them can access at any time? Call me paranoid but nah I’d have been gone esp seeing how many doors looked like the police or drunk people have had to force open. Which is weird when you think doors that flimsy would they need a battering ram to gain access? Too many questions, this hotel ,out of all of them is the biggest nope ever . I would feel unsafe af

Also wasn't he on the second floor ie not below the top floor so why loft hatch ?

My daughter worked on room service at a hotel during here student days, she told me that every horizontal surface in every room has had a used condom on it sometime or other. I have a ritual of cleaning all touchable surfaces with antiseptic wipes in any room I stay. That wire on the towel rail was perfectly safe, it's an earth bond, complies with the regulations.

It was much grander than this 30 plus years ago when I stayed. They used to park your car for you, the staff wore the correct attire, unlike the guy on reception and the tables had table cloths on. Our room was really lovely. You can tell its gone down hill. Shame!

@@xr6lad I'm circa 78 (so not a millennal) as far as I can see it's The Boomers who have more-or-less fucked over the country and indeed the planet constantly attack 'millennials and try to take credit for what the war-generation did but hay-ho. Intergeneration point scoring gets us nowhere.

When you see the Britannia Hotels logo you know you’re in for a rough time. Chains like Premier Inn and even Wetherspoons have been really good at modernising these grand hotels while keeping that retro opulence that gives them their character. Britannia just don’t care.

Personally if I'm going somewhere for the weekend I like to stay one night in the local Britannia Hotel as it is normally a beautiful old building and I can feel like I'm stepping back into a lost world. That being said I spend the second night somewhere that's actually comfortable.

It’s more than likely that Britannia use them as tax write offs.

The ‘Brick’ used to be a fantastic hotel which has sadly been absolutely neglected by its owners - Britannia Hotels. Sadly they have also been allowed to purchase two other historic hotels in Southport - which have also been neglected. It’s hard for old seaside towns to get tourists now, with shops struggling etc, but this is not helped by incompetent ownership - Britannia hotels, ruining hotels all over the country.

@@buzx1313, I spent many a Saturday night in 'The 'Brick' when I used to frequent Southport town centre in my youth. Used to go downstairs to the Odyssey bar, which was closed down and changed into the closed down leisure club in this video. Heck I'm old enough to remember when it used to be Chicago's bar in the 1980's, and what is now Maloney's Bar used to be filled with pool tables.

Britannia should know what they're doing but, apparently, anyone sitting at home tapping a keyboard could run make bigger profits. And "old" seaside resorts have more tourism economy than they've ever had, so that shows your knowledge of the subject.

They probably know but aren't willing to invest money to bring it up to a decent quality level. Same thing happens with big box stores, instead of Macy's having 100 nice stores they have 652 going out of business stores.@@basylpeterjones

Loved the part with the bloke singing to a full room and not a single person under sixty. Real Phoenix Nights vibe. Feels like a working men's club with a hotel attached.

I got my first job in this hotel in the early 80's, back then it was really beautiful and glamourous place, the family that ran the hotel were brilliant they really cared for the staff, working there was fun a real family atmosphere. Sad to see it so run down.

I love how the unsecured window is above the bed, i can imagine someone standing on the bed (drunk) and toppling out the window!

In Southport, for a decent budget hotel, stay at Premier Inn (Southport Central) at Ocean Plaza, Marine Drive. Popular with families and business people. Well located for entertainments, eating places, the pier and town attractions all in easy walking distance.

I remember staying here a number of years ago before Brittania as I was attending a meeting, and what I recall was that the hotel was lovely and it was clean. Shame it has went down hill.

Not an electrician, but the wire coming from the radiator looks like it is just an earth bonding wire that grounds the metal surface of the radiator, should it in any case ever make contact with a live wire. It's quite common, but usually at least neatly tucked away, sometimes behind the wall.

@@WalkWithMeTim Yeah, it's just connected to the ground, to make sure that if somehow anything electric was to make a connection to the radiator, or the pipework behind it, the electricity would just be sent through that wire into the ground (path of least resistance), rather than through someone's body that could touch it, into the ground (path of least resistance if the wire wasn't there). Kind of a precaution, considering bathrooms are areas where water and electricity can come close.

I was an electrician years ago and this equipotential bonding was quite common, yes it should be a lot neater but there is nothing dangerous about it as it is, it just looks terrible. It used to be a PIA having to run supplementary heavy earth cables to all metal pipework, bath tubs AND light fittings etc... in a bathroom, of course many firms just didn't bother. I'd left by the time the 18th Edition I think (might have been 17th 2nd?) of the wiring regulations removed the requirement providing all circuits serving the room had RCD or RCBO protection. In any case if a house or business property had from new or has fitted mainly plastic pipes, there is then no reason to bond pipes at all.

@@WalkWithMeTim Yes. Its purpose is to ground any electricity that might possibly get on/into the radiator. It's like how your gas meter at home is bonded to ground, as are your copper water pipes. It provides an escape path for the electricty. Without it any electricity would instead use YOU to travel to ground when you touched the pipe, in which case your worries about the drafty window would be over! It's like how a lightning rod running down from a church would take to ground a bolt of lightning that struck the church spire - it gives the electricity somewhere to escape.

What a shame. I stayed there in the 1990’s and it was beautiful, classy and spotless. The staff were so lovely. The pool was stunning and also spotless. As soon as I read Britannia my heart sank. Terrible. Such a shame. The food in the restaurant was amazing. Some of the best meals I had ever had. This video is heartbreaking. The original owners/family must be mortified and so angry about the downturn.

Will def be interesting. I did one night here about 4 years ago and it was ok-ish. I think Prince of Wales hotel on Lord Street in Southport needs a visit, Tim. I asked to see a room before booking and was taken via service lift...ladders, paint pots and kitchen area all fully accessible in the way up-stopped at every floor. This was hotel manager taking us btw. It was a sess pit. Filthy. That was the room. God knows what other rooms are like if he thought that was going to make a sale!

Such a shame to see it like this. My in-laws go to Southport regularly and always used to stay here when the previous owners had it. Last time they stayed Britannia had taken over and they said they’d never go again.

Thing with antique furniture is it's often the biggest pieces that are easiest to get cheap at auction because outside of a hotel few people would want them.

Me and my partner and our dog stayed in the Tarleton suite on the top floor! It was actually an okay room. We had a double bedroom, seprate bathroom and a separate living room area. The bathroom was very clean but the rest very dated

Tim needs to carry one of those travel size WD40 spray bottles. Not only might oil the hinges on doors but kill any bugs crawling around, with the insecticide smell. Great video as I like both the good and bad you always point out. Never looked under the mattress cover in a hotel room, and maybe I don't want to. I guess you didn't try the breakfast? Thanks again Tim for your 5 star reviews.

I stayed at this hotel about 10 years ago. I remember that the springs were sticking right through my mattress and we had to take a numbered ticket for our turn in the breakfast room. We waited 45 minutes to go in. I had previously been to a meeting at the hotel around 25 years ago (pre-Britannia) and it was a good hotel in those days.

It's very hard to get chandeliers cleaned these days, I heard about three cowboys from Peckham dropping one once...

It's a Brittania Hotel. Nuff said. Same company that sacked it's hotel employees in Aviemore during 2020 then claimed it was an administrative error.

Top Tip! My son lives in New Zealand so from the UK it is a lot of travelling for me and staying in different places. I ALWAYS pack a Turkish towel. No matter where I stay I always lay it over my pillows for hygiene and it is also good for putting over your shoulders if the evenings get cooler and you can also use it as an actual towel and it dries really quick and also a beach towel!

The Scarisbrick, locally pronounced as Scaysbrick, has been shut for the past couple of weeks. Apparently its being refurbished and should be open in February. I'm wondering if this vlog had anything to do with this because there were reservations in place for January. Anyone arriving at the hotel gets redirected to the Prince of Wales just up the road. Britannia own a few hotels in the Southport area plus Stalag Pontins which you've already had the pleasure of.

I have a theory about some of the larger pieces of furniture. I would speculate that these were once part of a larger suite.When these suites' were partitioned up into standard rooms the grand furniture was hauled to the landings and left there. Perhaps because they're too heavy to get down the stairs in one piece and disassembling them would require a skilled carpenter or furniture maker. The main reason therefore is cost.

I have been told stories about this place when I used to work in Liverpool years ago. They have said it was a dump and to stay away and looking at this I think they got it spot on. Great video Tim. 😊

I was unfortunate enough to have to stay at this hotel probably 6 or 7 years ago, when I worked as a tour driver for National Holidays, it was a Saturday night, and the passengers I had were on a weekend theatre show tour, having returned to the hotel late on the Saturday, I discovered that downstairs the bar / nightclub was playing loud music with loud bass, that reverberated up into the rooms, and it wasn't until after 4am before I managed to get any sleep, before having to be back up at 7am, and drive the coach. The company were made aware of this problem, by myself and majority of the passengers, but I would NEVER stay at that hotel again!

I stayed there once, work booked it for me for a course years ago. My room had no windows, just a sky light which was very random and they weren't doing breakfast, I was offered breakfast at a hotel up the road at another hotel but opted for the Sainsbury's down the road. It was fine for what it was but wouldn't choose to stay there again

Sparky here, that cable attached to pipework... bonding strap. Basically electrical safety line should pipework become live from some fault. Wet it all you like.

I won a competition 30 years ago and the prize was a weekend at the Scarisbrick. I was introduced to Mrs C the owner and the whole place was gorgeous - I had a wonderful time. So sad to see it in such a sad state 😢

Haha been waiting for this one! Prince of Wales next? Baron's Bar is nice and cosy for a few pints, never been in the club next door though but could still hear it the one time I stayed in the hotel...

I Iike the Prince of Wales.. but I always try to get the same internal room.. Last time was the night of the great hurricane

I had my wedding reception there in 1990 when it was a beautiful hotel. I think I recognise that wallpaper. Sad to see something go down hill. I love Southport but sadly Britania have taken over 3 of what were once our best hotels

Southport is lovely, use to go every sunday with my nan and grandad as a kid, there are some lovely hotels in southport but i remember my dad telling me he and my mum went to the scarisbrick hotel and they ate there and got sick

As a Southport resident I've spent many a good night in the Scarisbrick's bars, though they're not as busy as they were 10 years ago. Good to see round the rest of the hotel as I've never needed to stay in it. Shame it looks so tired. I've just found out from an old Southport promotional video from 1985 that the Scarisbrick was built in 1821 and later in 1845 had horse drawn carriage to Ormskirk so people could catch the train. I didn't realise it was that old!

Maloney's bar brings back memories of some good nights out in the 2000s. I've never considered staying over, but my dad also had his wedding reception here back in 2004

So how much was your room?

I am really enjoying the best & worst hotels. I keep hoping you will do the Blackpool Metropole, which we renamed the Metrohole after spending a night there. They might even give you a room on the lower ground floor, aka sprout corridor due to the stench 😝

My 5 year old son and I love your channel. It’s our go to when we want to watch something quiet and relaxing and he always loves the parts where things feel a bit spooky and grotty details!

@@WalkWithMeTim I think it’s the POV walking through rooms and seeing what is behind doors as he’s really curious. Its also inadvertently quite relaxing! My only concern it might be setting him high standards with regards to hotel cleanliness 😂 (when he starts checking the mattresses I will start to worry 😂).

This is the best channel to explore old houses from the inside😍 definately one of my favourites:)

Evening Tim,wow that room was bad,I wouldn't like to stay there for nite,and I noticed that every grand hotel never clean there lift or rooms ,that is such a shame, take care Tim

I stayed here in 1980. I worked for Barclays Bank and they shipped us from the staff training in Liverpool over here every night. I seem to remember that it was in receivership in 1980 which is why the bank owned it and used it to accomodate the staff. The hotel looks exactly the same as it did over 40 years ago. Furniture, decor only in those days, it was ok. It looks very dodgy now.

I had no idea it was so tired. As a child they had a family room when kids were not allowed in pubs. It was basic compared to the other bar rooms but at least it meant I didnt have to wait outside like with other pubs.

😂 I used to go in malpneys every night, it used to get absolutely packed. We would all go use the toilets up the hotel stairs 😂. Used the toilet in the wedding suit once, from what I remember that room wasn't as bad as the room you stayed in.

The original lift was the type with manual doors and a sliding gate.. someone did fall down the shaft from the first floor, apparently drunk opened the outer doors and stepped in but no lift was there...they survived.. the 4th floor off memory was staff bedrooms..

I’ll admit, the window missing half its fixings was me, when I had to make a quick exit, when someone forcefully tried breaking the door down in the middle of the night!! 😱😂

That window is amazingly dangerous. If you have a small child (or drink charged party goer still in party mode) in that room jumping on the bed and the fall or lean against that thing, they're going for unwanted journey to outside be it a fall to the fall or roof of the building bellow. Not good at all. Now seen there's an exit outside it. So the perfect serial killer, robber or r4p3$t entrance..hmm

Shame, we used to go there for conference regularly around 10 years plus ago. It used to be at least 'Adequate' back then and I think we used to park around the back? The beds were comfortable, the food was reasonable and the 'Barons Bar' was actually good. It was OK back then but not the worst, that was the Britannia in Wolverhampton. Now that really was dreadful. Just looked and it's also owed by Britannia group, need I say more?

Thanks for doing this one. I felt a bit sad watching this as I stayed there a few times when I was younger over the years in the 80s. I stayed once over Christmas and New Year and it was fabulous. As a college student we used to go to the Knights Bar and the atmosphere was great. Stayed in rooms 301 and immediately surrounding rooms so got to see a few of them and they were a world away from this even though I think it was a 3 star. Incidentally, the lifts were different back then but got stuck in them a couple of times even then haha. The Derby room back then was all more formal dining room for evening meals. There was another dining room for breakfast and high teas which I can’t recall the name of. There were cloths on the tables, it was spotlessly clean and the staff were dressed more formally yet weren’t stuffy. They made you feel part of the family and we had some great times there. Very sad to see its deterioration really.

Greatly enjoying the series. Thank you so but please check whether they provide clean pillow and mattress protectors.

Used to go to Southport for a night out in the 2000s and always started the night off in the Scarisbrick's bars! Even better if there was a football game on. Great nights, great memories.

Theres a horror movie in my country about a lift that takes you down into a demonic world of ghouls and Tim when you got in that elevator down to the reception towards the end I was genuinely scared that was the evil lift from the movie 💀💀 glad you see you made it out ok

Hey, with the bed tests, always hoping to see the sheets pulled off to see the mattress. Couldnt sleep on a grim mattress so hopefully you can show us one x

Stayed here for a couple of nights last March, shabby but room was spotless, night club was closed so it was quiet. Food OK but loved the free tea/coffee station outside the restaurant, it became a meeting point. Booked to come again for a couple of nights to a tribute weekend with a few friends this March, but have noticed it's closed for a re furbished, so do t know where we will be staying. Had to come back for a second visit, because we couldn't belive it the first time, bit like faulty towers. Lovebit.

What a great review, I live not far from the hotel, originally owned by a family who knew how to run hotels, and it was the place to be seen. The second bar you went in to was the highlight of my Saturday night, it was jam packed, so how sad to see just 2 people in there. The hotel was sold to the Brittania group... need say no more about them and not so long ago the hotel was full of asylum seekers. Its so sad to see, but yes, a great review 👍

Yeah didn't the lady owner have long wavy blonde going grey hair and very elegantly dressed. She bought her clothes from the designer boutique across the road near the Prince of Wales.

I grew up in Southport and family now in Churchtown. This hotel was the best. Please can you do a review of the Prince of Wales because I last stayed there in the 90’s and it would be interesting to see if it has changed. Thank you 😊

The Prince is also owned by Britannia now, as is the Royal Clifton I worked in the brick on the bars a few years ago. There was a joke between staff... if anyone said it was a shithole we'd say 'yeah, but it's OUR shithole' It was actually goof fun on the bars. Good staff who did what they could with the little amount they were given

You can always the outsider as only Southport residents can pronounce Scarisbrick correctly

Thanks for the video tour. The hotel has many grand, old world features to it and does not appear deserving of the worst hotel label. There are a number of hotels like this in New Zealand and they have a certain charm about them.

It does look grand. Still not sure about the leather sofas and other furniture. Like you said "Don't know where they get it from" Great video as always.

One tip I learnt from my experiences working in hotels and travelling is bring a door stop when travelling, cheap and will help secure doors for a little longer. Seen hotel rooms and apartments getting broken into more than is reported. I love staying in older hotels that have a history but when these grand hotels that had such success decline to where no one wants to stay!
