Worst driving test route 2019 - what a nightmare!

Worst driving test route 2019. A driving instructor takes a driving test and has a nightmare! due to a baffling cloverleaf roundabout system and a crazy sat nav with attitude. The chaos begins at 10:00 as the sat nav gives me confusing directions that sent me round in circles. I couldn't see the screen very well and the spoken directions make little sense.
The point of this video was that I wanted to see what it was like for a learner driver to take a driving test. It's easy to forget what it's like when you don't know the area like the back of your hand and doing this has given me a lot more sympathy for the majority of my pupils who don't come from Birmingham.
Chapters:
0:00 - Introduction
4:10 - The driving starts
9:48 - The nightmare begins
Here's the Redditch roundabouts calendar I mentioned www.redditchadvertiser.co.uk/...
Here's the Redditch Cloverleaf junction www.roads.org.uk/interchanges...
Looking back it's easy to explain what was happening but when you're driving, talking, to the camera and doing several other things at once it's not so easy.
What you can see is what I can see - it was a dark day and I had the screen set up for the camera more than myself. I planned on using KZread's editing tools to brighten the video after I'd uploaded it but they have been removed so I couldn't.
I could hardly see the line so I was going more by the voice and that's what caused the problems. The screen just didn't zoom out enough for me to see the line far enough ahead. The sat nav would not be positioned here for a test, it would be closer to you and the examiner will make sure you can see it.
When the sat nav was saying "Take the exit then keep right" I was already on the road it was talking about - the exit. That's very confusing because if you say "exit" you normally think you'd have to exit one road and join another. When it says "Take the exit" it actually means STAY on the exit.
Imagine two roads running parallel with each other. We'll call the road on the left road A and the road on the right road B. I was on A and it wanted me to take A. Road bends over to the right and touches road B allowing you to go from A to B or B to A. You can alos stay on A or B and not exit which is what the sat nav wanted m to do. When it was saying "take the exit" it should really have said nothing, told me to keep left or to stay in the same lane. I think saying "exit" is confusing when you don't need to change lanes.
Learner drivers struggle with this route because of things I did naturally due to experience. Yes I went the wrong way but that wasn't what pupils struggle with because the examiner would help. It's the unexpectedly short slip roads, tight bends and so many poorly marked roundabouts that learners find hard. That combined with the confusing directions and layouts make this a very hard route in my opinion.
Sorry the video is a little dark but that's just how these cameras are and it was a very dark, overcast day. I'll soon be replacing these cameras so this will no longer be a problem.
In my preview for this video on my community page I mentioned that this video solves a mystery from an old one. I was referring to the video linked in this one about the car driving the wrong way down the dual carriageway. That was in the bit where the sat nav kept sending me round in circles so maybe that's what happened to them and what I meant about me doing well to keep it all going and not make a mistake like that.

    Don't let this put you off doing a test in Redditch. It was only so hard because I couldn't see the sat nav screen too well but on a real test the examiner would be there to guide you. I don't know which part of the test would use the sat nav as only 20 minutes is done like that, not all of it.

    It’s simple. You’ve just gotta take the exit, then take the exit and take the exit then keep right and take the exit before you take the exit and then take the exit. Keep right.

    I agree, you HAVE to know the area as there will be unexpected tricks almost guarantee. I came in my own car to Cheetham Hill test centre and failed at the end of a test by going 30mph not noticing a portion of the road having 20mph zone because of the school. I just haven`t noticed the sign as I was concentrating on the road markings and cars around me for safety in that area.

    I would've probably struggled with this one. When learning I had a kind of anxiety of roundabouts. I never knew where anyone was going, as most of the time they never signaled, and when they did they signaled incorrectly. I still have a little hesitation as I still get loads of drivers who think we're all psychic. That test is a very challenging one, and the sat nav didn't make it any easier. Sat navs are ok, but like this video shows, they can be very confusing.

    I live in Redditch and am currently learning how to drive, I've always thought that the number of roundabouts was just normal across the UK since I've never driven outside of Redditch before. I think we just get used to them. The part where you did the hill start, usually the examiner will ask you to do a reverse parallel park there because of all the cars on the side. It's also a good place to learn meeting points.

    Fantastic video, been waiting for a video like this for ages! I've got the new fiesta zetec (67 plate) and I found that it struggles at 30mph in 4th gear as well and I've only got 5 gears. Do you notice that when you go downhill, it feels like its accelerating without you pressing the gas pedal?

  • @1stdrive

    @1stdrive

    5 жыл бұрын

    I've had about 10 new Fiesta's from 2009 to 2018 so I've been through a few different revisions and at least 5 different engine sizes and power outputs. When they changed the diesel engine size from 1.4 to 1.5 I found it didn't like 4th so much but all other cars I've ever had liked 4th at 30mph. This one I have now can do it but if you drop to just 29mph it flashes at you to change to 3rd. I haven't noticed them rolling away down hills any more than any other car I've had.

  • @Dominate955

    @Dominate955

    @@1stdrive Yeah, I think the zetec used to be a 1.25 and now its 1.1. It tells me to gear up at 30mph and it makes that horrible sound when you change gear too early. Before I owned the Fiesta I had a much older car, so maybe its just me how it automatically accelerates. It may have something to do with saving fuel or maintaining the desired speed. My parents have a Seat Toledo, and they notice something similar. But, it is a fantastic car and its so easy to drive.

    1stdrive. I agree, I have done IAM and Rospa in Car, Coach and Artic Lorry but ultimately it is about driving standards and awareness and forward planning. The DVSA align themselves to Driving Skills syllabus rather than Roadcraft manual. If you have never driven a bus or a truck then I recommend if you can to get out in one. It would give you a greater understanding and enhanced thinking into what large vehicle drivers have to do, it is very much multi-tasking like what you were doing in this video. Education is the key as novice drivers nowadays tend to be taught to pass a test rather than fundamental driving skills, with little to no understanding or empathy to other road users such as cyclists, lorry and bus drivers.

    OK, I'm a learner, so this may be a stupid question, but what exactly does the satnav mean when it says "keep right"? Does it mean stay in the outside lane on a dual carriageway? Does it mean keep making right turns until told otherwise? Is it that the satnav is made in a country where they drive on the right & its reminding the driver not to drive on the left? Why?? If it were telling me to "keep left" I'd be thinking "well we all drive on the left in the UK, what do you mean - keep taking left turns until told otherwise, or what?" I'm sure I'm embarrassing myself with this question, but my reaction is "huh?"

  • @Ultima2876

    @Ultima2876

    5 жыл бұрын

    Bob Smith it depends on the sat nav, but usually it just means ‘don’t go into the leftmost lane, it will make you exit and take you off course’. See how the left lanes here force you to exit unless you get out of them a bit early? It’s just warning you about that. It’s a fast way of saying ‘the left lane is going to make you exit, so don’t be in that lane’. Keep left is usually used when the road splits into two lanes and the rightmost lane leads you somewhere you don’t want to go - for example, at a motorway intersection where the left lane will take you south and the right lane will take you north. If you’re heading south it might say ‘keep left’.

  • @1stdrive

    @1stdrive

    5 жыл бұрын

    When it says keep right it usually means stay on the road you're on and don't turn off when there's a slip road on the left. There's a test route by me where the examiner always has to explain that keep right means don't do anything.
