For many years I disregarded the American heavy cruisers because they lacked torpedoes. In a world where I could play Myoko or Hipper, why would I give up torpedoes to play an all-gun cruiser like Baltimore? It was more than 3 years after the release of the game that I really began to wrap my brain around these ships - how they worked and what made them good - and I have loved the line ever since. Join me as I explain how it is that Pensacola and her successors remain so deadly more than 8 years after World of Warships' release. In this video I'll talk about how I build my Pensacola, why I fit her out that way, how I recommend playing her, and follow all of that up with a game demonstrating the ship in action.
Enjoy!

    One of your very best videos. Pausing to explain correct (or incorrect!) tactics with respect to the situation and ship's abilities is what sets you apart from the other guys. That's your wheelhouse. You can learn something from this vid even if you have no interest in Pensacola.

    I was excited when I unlocked my first radar cruiser Baltimore. I was sadly disappointed. I kept dieing. I finally got the mods and Halsey on it. That helped a lot. Now I like the ship.

    It's truly amazing how these videos always come out at exactly the right time for me, when you did the German cruiser line guides, I was grinding the German cruisers, and now that I'm grinding the us heavy cruisers, your guide comes out. Thank you for these, I would be a much worse player without them.

    Honestl as a Closed Beta Veteran, Pensacola always seemed to suffer from three things, she was too high a tier really when you look at her both historically and ability wise, her horrible (for a cruiser) concealment, and for the fact that she had to contend with *CLEVELAND* of all ships as the T6 preceding her. Considering they didn’t really do much to Cleveland when they moved her to T8 and she’s still one of my favorite light cruisers should tell you something the sort of expectations Cleveland gave us before the line split.

    Great advice Sea Raptor! As you said, hydro is a must and to keep moving or slowing, juking is important. A good way for people to learn how to keep moving is to use the ship in Operations a few times to get to know it. Thanks! o7

    The guns don’t have the punch of Baltimore +, but the flatter arcs are easier to shoot. Down side, can’t shoot over islands as easily, an issue a time or two in this game. Well played. The 25mm armor is a challenge, but the 16mm on the light cruisers is even more so. With subs being more and more the OP choice over carriers, I am always taking the hydro when there is a choice. That may be a bit dogmatic, you make some good points.

  • @SeaRaptor

    I think in the middle tiers - particularly with this AA range - hydro is the superior choice over DFAA 99 times out of 100. By the time you get to Baltimore at T8 - whose AA is excellent, and who has longer-range depth charge strikes - I think the choice is less clear-cut.

    Pensacola was a brutal follow up after the Cleveland at tier 6. Add Incoming Fire and Radio Location and that's my build. The RL helps me clean up DDs as needed. Pensacola is much fun for Dev Striking cruisers.

    imo, i feel grinding the line makes it harder to enjoy the ships. So when the line is finally maxed, the other's tend to be more fun.

    I've found this as well for some reason. I think there's just the simple joy of going back and playing a ship because you *want* to, versus feeling like you *have* to.

    This is great thankyou! What are citadels good for? Just extra damage?

  • @SeaRaptor

    @SeaRaptor

    2 ай бұрын

    Shell damage in World of Warships is based on three main types of shell hits: overpenetration, full penetration, and citadels. An overpenetration will hit for ~10% of the shell damage value you see listed in port. A full penetration will hit for ~33%. Those two types of hits can generally occur nearly anywhere on a ship, depending on the shell being fired and exactly where it lands. Citadel damage can ONLY come from shells that land in the citadel of an enemy ship. Ships that have citadels - basically anything that's not a destroyer or submarine - can show you where their citadel spaces are via the armor profile tool in port. Shells that strike the citadel do 100% of the max shell damage you see listed in port. Striking the citadel of an enemy ship is quickest way to deal maximum damage, which is why armor profiles and ship positioning and so on are so important.

    Hello! Great video! I am a new WOW player, used to play WOT back in the day. I just got the Pensacola, have 0 exp, learning my way in the game. Dumb question here, which will be my best choice regarding ammo? AP or HE? , should i fire one more often tha n the other?Thanks in advance

  • @SeaRaptor

    @SeaRaptor

    5 ай бұрын

    As a cruiser, if you aren't sure what ammo to fire defaulting to HE is always pretty safe. Truthfully, it depends on what you are firing at and what angle they have to you. + Destroyer or submarine, any angle: HE + Narrow-beam cruiser, battleship, or carrier: HE + Broadside cruiser, battleship, or carrier: AP Basically, if you're shooting at something smaller than you (DD or SS), fire HE. If you are shooting something equivalent or larger (CA, BB, CV), fire AP if they are broad to you and HE otherwise. The American heavy cruisers - like Pensacola - in particular get big benefits from firing AP as often as they can.

  • @SeaRaptor

    @SeaRaptor

    There is not. When you take DFAA, you are rolling the dice that you will see a CV. Sometimes you will, sometimes you won't.

    Her detection should only be that high when she fires. Her surface detection starts around 13.5km or so, and can drop if you invest in the 4-point commander skill called "Concealment Expert".

    Basically, any ship that has defensive AA as an option has bad base AA.

  • @SeaRaptor

    @SeaRaptor

    11 ай бұрын

    I strongly disagree, but it's true for these particular ships because their base AA range simply isn't worth the opportunity cost of giving up the hydro.
