World of Warships - Learn to Play: Tier VI American Destroyer USS Farragut

Ойындар

I've been threatening for a while, so here we are at last: how to play the American destroyers. Let's continue down the line with Tier VI's USS Farragut.
00:00 - Intro
00:08 - Meet Farragut
01:44 - Survivability & Armor Scheme
03:55 - Maneuverability & Concealment
07:35 - Main Battery
10:02 - Torpedoes
12:07 - Depth Charges
12:59 - AA Defenses
14:17 - Commander Skills
15:42 - Consumables
16:10 - Upgrades
18:08 - Sample Gameplay
Farragut is a VERY challenging ship to play in this line. I'd argue that she's the most difficult... but you haven't gotten to Benson yet. More than any other American destroyer I can think of, Farragut hates being bottom tier... and she is unquestionably a downgrade from Nicholas in a lot of ways. Does she have ANYTHING going for her? Well... yes and no. In this video I'll talk about how I build my Farragut, why I fit her out that way, how I recommend playing her, and follow all of that up with a game demonstrating the ship in action.
Enjoy!

The Farraguts did see a lot of action in WW2, USS Farragut herself was fighting a very active war in the Pacific from Pearl Harbor through many battles until the end, earning 14 battle stars.

After I watched this I had my best battle ever in Farragut in the match right after I followed your advice. I got two devestating strikes using the islands for cover and sunk 3 ships. I sunk a DD with my guns. And a CA and BB with my torps as well as getting first blood.

I went from Nicolas to this, and was disappointed that it was worse than it's predecessor. Nicolas felt really comfortable and forgiving, and having 2 torpedo racks per side was really nice. The increase in torpedo and gun range and extra barrel really doesn't make up for the significantly worse detection, hp pool, and less overall torpedoes.

Farragut is basically a downgrade from Nicholas in nearly every respect that matters. The only good news I can give you is that it DOES get better at Mahan and that the top of the line ships are worth the pain.

@@SeaRaptor That's good news. I recently picked up DDs after a few years of not wanting to play them (I tried when I first started, but due to lack of experience and misplays, I thought I hated them), and actually found out I liked the play style. The Nicolas is really quite forgiving, so going from that to the Farragut was quite shocking.

I see a Farragut come into my team it is a cause for (minor) despair. They almost always live half-fast, die young, and leave an ugly corpse. The message I am getting from this video is that it is not completely the players’ fault. I have Monaghan at Tier VI, with the stupid nasty torpedoes so I haven’t played Farragut in quite awhile. Looks like a worthy challenge. Can’t do anything about the crap ballistics, learn to deal with them while not playing against the fantasy boats at higher tiers.

Farragut is arguably the worst-designed Tier VI destroyer in World of Warships, marrying worst-in-tier detection to worst-in-tier stealth. You're correct in thinking that it's not fully the fault of new players that they don't know how to handle the boat.

Exotic trivia: midships is probably “Mount 53”. We only had one 5”/38 on my Coast Guard High Endurance Cutter, and it was “Mount 51”. (Replaced in the mid-70s by an Oto Melara 76mm, a much better choice. 5”/38 trying to track even a Skyhawk in AA mode was tragic.)

solid game, all in all great use of what little farragut has to bring in, smoking teamates in the hope they know how to use it and spoting for them 10/10 there no argue. what i have to object tho and heavily is this: captain skills modules and def aa. def aa over speed boost??? like hell no. speed boost can be used to throttle juke in open water gunboating, it can be used to throttle juke vs plane attacks, it can be used to throttle juke vs other dds, it can be used to relocate a bit faster once a flank is clear, its one of the most important cds on any dd , i value it even more than smoke. def aa is a meme. while i like that 10% reload , i would pick radio location as the 2nd 4 pointer even before AR, 17 pick AR then last 4 would pick liquidator and main battery specialist, thinking that this captain eventually moves up tier and is a gearing captain or a fletcher cpt etc. radio location would have me chase down enemy dds easier or avoid been chased by them, such valuable info to pinpoint stealthier dds and choose your fights. last but not least, unless its a meme , 1 mil credits for ASW module??? like wth , this is supposed to address to new players and you tell them to take ASW module over propulsion?? come on my dud. Play like he did people , excellent showcase of a dd, but pls pls take speed boost and propulsion module and learn how to juke and throw people`s aim, it will score you more dmg per hit points lost than anything else. o7

There are different ways to play each ship. I explained why I take DFAA on all my USN destroyers in the Nicholas video, while also pointing out that it isn't for everyone. I also explain why I take the depth charge module on Farragut (and she's the only ship in the line I do it on). Propulsion mod is great if you spend a lot of time stationary, but since it quits doing anything once you hit 10 knots, it's only really good for going from dead stop to moving. If you're just going from slow speed to high speed, propulsion mod has no impact.

@@SeaRaptor prop mod makes you gain full engine power 50% faster not taking into account the last stand bug.so it also makes you stop faster when you re trying to full stop juke a salvo. don`t get me wrong but you also getting depth charge mod in mahan in your next vid ;p i ve played 15km full gunboat shimakaze and still got top on the board , but it doesn`t make it a good build or i wouldn`t make it a tutorial/learn how to shima out of it, rather a meme/troll build. again good stuff here, much needed tutorials for new players, take whatever critique with genuine interest not illmented or hater bubbling

What I learned with the US Destroyers, your mostly a gunboat, going after other DD's, But it's mostly in the commander build. Also like to point out in your commander build, you have F1, F2, F3, E4 that's good but I did my own research a little and you might or might not agree but here we go anyway. I would suggest for US Gun boating, F1, F2, F3, A2, A3, A4. then you are at nineteen points. So I would suggest C1 and D1 if you build up for gunboat. Torpedo boat is a whole other build. Also I like to point out AA, do not invest points in AA because WG Devs totaly killed the AA Defense so I would not suggest it to anyone

  • @SeaRaptor

    @SeaRaptor

    Жыл бұрын

We disagree on AA. The CV player is always going to buff his plane health. USN DDs get the best DFAA consumable in the game. Buffing your AA so you can slaughter planes is a perfectly valid choice in this line. I do it all the time and I've never regretted it.

@@SeaRaptor in the early game i would agree, but with the state on carriers AA Defence isn't that great at the higher tiers. But like i said thats mine opinion.

"Actually SeaRaptor" (sorry!) The Monaghan (Farragut class) capsized in Typhoon Cobra in 1944 while serving in the Third Fleet so they were still being used in front line service. I may think about the US line in WoWS but it might be a bit of adjustment as I play the IJN torp boats and the French DDs, up to T8 there, T10 in IJN. I will have Halsey in a while though he may not be an optimal DD captain. With the firing in smoke penalty, is it worth it to smoke for a BB? It is spotted as soon as it fires, unless it gives them a chance to position before firing?

  • @SeaRaptor

    @SeaRaptor

    Жыл бұрын

In 95%+ of cases, smoking a battleship is no longer worth your while in Warships. There was a time - long ago - that the smoke firing penalty didn't exist, so competitive Warships play was BBs sitting in smoke taking shots at each other. It was kind of silly, so Wargaming made adjustments. These days, smoking a secondary battleship that's in a tough spot can be fun or useful, because secondary guns don't have a firing penalty. So if you're coordinating in a division with, I dunno a Bismarck or something, you could have some fun with it. But in the vast majority of cases, you bring a BB for the main battery and firing that main battery from inside smoke will get him just as spotted as firing it from out of smoke.

I find using smoke to defend allies is best used to cover cruisers that are trying to kite...or when the enemy has an unspotted DD spotting for them and you want to create a curtain barrier to force the enemy DD to move to continue his spotting. I have also used smoke to cover a carrier retreat.

Honestly, she isn't THAT bad of a boat. But she is strictly a downgrade from Nicholas in so many ways, I feel like players need to be prepared for that. You can still achieve a lot with Farragut, but you have to temper your expectations. This isn't Fletcher. ;)

Ah yes, Farragut, the worst ship in the game... Farragut's fine, but she's a complete bummer after Nicholas with nothing to redeem her other than statistically better matchmaking than Mahan. This is the first ship I had to skip to get to something more tolerable. I don't regret it. Nicholas teaches you what US DDs _are_ and Farragut teaches you what they _shouldn't_ be. Thankfully Mahan is actually a return to form and feels very good in her current spot. At least Farragut teaches you to conserve your health lest you have your ticket punched early on.

sit under a rock until all destroyers are dead and all enemy ships have been spotted once , nice lesson to learn, in real life it is not like this guy cherry picked from 100 battles the best one in his dd, the irony is after his cherry picked one in 100 he's starting teaching what you should do, when you should do it based on what's happening in his cherry picked video . any complains?
