I got the annual state inspection on my Outback and it passed! But the mechanic, who knows I do all my own work, told me I'm going to need to replace the front brake pads soon, because they're almost worn down to nothing. He also said, "The rear rotors are rough."
I wasn't too surprised to hear that, because I thought there was something wrong, but the calipers, pads, and rotors are only two years old.
I was pleased that my rear brake pads weren't very worn down, because the rotors looked pretty rusty.
I cleaned up the rusty rotors, and reinstalled the old brake pads, since they were evenly worn and still have approximately 50% of their life left in them.
The brakes work and feel like new!
I'll end up revisiting these brakes in a year or two, and I'll probably have to replace everything with new parts at that time.
