Cold - Car Wouldn't Start | Troubleshooting Tips | Man About Home

2009 Subaru Outback wouldn't start.
On our first cold snap this year, it was 21 degrees F. And our Subaru refused to start. It would crank and crank and crank, but never showed any sign of firing. Not a single bump.
I used Starting Fluid to get it going. But what if that didn't work? What's next?

Old fuel? Weak spark? Low compression? I've had slow start condition get better with a different brand of gas. Strange but not all gas batches are the same.

Fresh fuel, but I wouldn't discount the batch. The plugs, coil and wires are relatively new. Spark is "probably" ok. I haven't measured it. Haven't measured compression either. But if it's a little low, the spark would be a little better. It hasn't happened again. It's 24 outside, so I'll see how it does this morning. It hasn't gone through a full tank yet. When it's refilled I'll add injector cleaner. Thanks for watching and commenting! A few minutes later. It fired right up, like a Summer day.
