Woodturning: Yellow Birch Pedestal Box

Ойын-сауық

Thank you so much for watching and subscribing! This is my 7th filmed project, and it had a rocky start! I think I need a bigger lathe! This piece of yellow birch was harvested within the past year or two, so it was not fully dry. However, it was very spalted and soft, which seemed to indicate it was close to becoming punky. In hindsight, I probably should have restricted myself to an oil finish in order to let the wood dry while the oil hardens instead of trying to seal the wood immediately with wax. Anyway, let me know what you think!
This piece will not be for sale. It will be a gift to my friend who gave me the yellow birch for free.
I really appreciate all the new subscribers! Thank you! If you aren't one, please hit that Subscribe button! Also, liking and commenting really helps promote each video, and I also really appreciate the feedback!

Regarding the coordinating of audio to video content, the VISUAL PRESENTATION is EXTRAORDINARILY COMPLIMENTARY to the AUDIBLE ADDITION. FURTHERMORE, I find your VIDEOS, devoid of MUSICAL AUDIO, COMMENSURATE to the ENTERTAINMENT VALUE as, PERSPECTIVELY, any DEAF VIEWERS should EXPERIENCE DELIGHT in WITNESSING the EMBELLISHMENTS of your CREATIVITY pursuant to COMPLETION of your MASTERFUL ARTISTRY. That aside, I THANK YOU for providing such QUALITY ENTERTAINMENT and KNOWLEDGEABLE INSIGHT for MYSELF and the MASSES OF KZread EXPLORERS who DISCOVER your DEMONSTRATIONS of thoroughly BLESSED TALENT with MATERIAL EXPERTISE.

I do enjoy your videos very much. The sound of your lathe and cutting tools is all I need. Very therapeutic and calming. I hate listening to babbling videos where the person runs on endlessly trying to convince you about how smart they are and no real content is offered up. And a beautiful piece of art at at the end of everyone of your videos, well done all around. ✌️😎

About 1,000 years ago, ok about 4 years ago,I found this channel and subbed even though I knew nothing about what you were doing. It was simply beautiful. Over time, I drifted away from it. But tonight I was looking for something different to watch. Scrolling through my channels, I found you again! I think this may have been one of the first of your videos I watched, back at the dawn of time! It even still had my thumb up from all that time ago lol just wanted to say hi and that your work is still just as beautiful. Best to you and yours from New Orleans

BEAUTIMOUS !!!! Thanks for posting !!! I LOVE that wood !!! In my younger years, I liked to come home from school and make a lot of chips. I made candle holders, vases, stands to hold pecans and the various tools to bust them and pick them out. I was always coming up with something pretty for Mom or Dad or my Grand Parents. When you started on the "spire lid-handle for the lid, I thought you were making Chess-pieces. Fooled me! VERRRRY NICE piece!!! Bill, from Tn. 🇺🇸

In Cyprus we have trees with fantastic grain and shapes and when I start to work on a piece I never know what will be the final product. I'll be honest with you, I would never have applied all those finishes if I thought to wood was cooperating. But I think the wood was too wet when I turned it. This has got to be the most beautiful wood I've ever seen. And no one turns a finial better than you. Everything about your videos are beautiful. Music. Artistry. And the scenery is breathtaking. Thank you.

Thank you! It really is gorgeous stuff, but it is a soft wood so it rots quickly in log form.

@@DavidAdamsen Wow... I've worked with pine only creating decoys. Using wood burning tools and a dremel. I think true art seeing potential in just a piece of wood...

That is a skill too! I need to improve my dremel skills, I’m very much a noob when it comes to carving.

@@DavidAdamsen It's funny though when I see how you move the chisel as the log spins, it's very similar to carving (which it is), but at a faster pace...lol

Add a shelf to you lathe stand with weight and that will help with the rough starts from out of balanced chunks of wood. Besides that your work is beautiful and I’ve enjoyed watching your turning videos. Beautiful work.

I am always fascinated about wood carving. When I was young, I used to watch carvers doing it manually, Yes manually and since then the evolution of machine helped the carvers do the job perfectly. Hats off. God given skills.

I love the vase, do much beauty in the wood grain, the finish, and the simple shape, allowing the grain to take center stage. I love the final as well, however, there is something about the 2 together that isn't doing it for me. Perhaps the scale of the two pieces together. Either way, your work is just incredible. Thank you!
