A Disaster with Olive Burl

Ойын-сауық

Full of natural voids, stress cracks, and unstable features, this olive burl was always going to explode, but I was determined to try and complete this project without the use of resin. Unfortunately, that turned out to be the only way to salvage this piece in the end.
Please let me know what you think of this project by leaving a comment below! I cannot always respond to every comment, but I make time to read each one. I always appreciate feedback, positive or negative.

If it were me turning the bowl, the pieces would have ended up in file 13 or the fire wood pile. But you, took a bowl full of lemons and turned it into lemonade. You came up with a very ingenious way to save the turning. This is why I think you are becoming one of the best wood turners in KZread. And believe me, there are many great wood turners on KZread and you’re among the best.

Outstanding save! Very glad that you were not hurt when it let go. My father made beautiful turnings as well. Some made it into museums and given as prestigious gifts to "VIP's". Beautiful work!

Beautiful piece, David. I'm glad you weren't injured when the explosion occurred. Even though you didn't want to use resin, I think it really added to the overall beauty. Just my opinion. Take care. Bill

Totally awesome. All turners have had that peice that blew apart or ran across the floor. I have saved those I had high hopes for myself but never like you did. I was thinking "Artifacts of a great woodturner" BUT the video was only half finished. You are a true artisan and teacher to us all.

what I love about crafts videos is that at any point the craftsman stops I think "man what a beautiful piece", and then I see the video still has 80% of its run time. I can never tell when they are done and am super surprised by the finished product

Easily one of the most amazing bits of turning I've ever seen. Not just the initial turning (which was incredible!) but the rescue. Holy cow! That was brilliant! Making that form to glue the pieces to was probably quite a task in itself. Did you get a bit of deja vu hollowing it out the second time?

wasn't it though? absolutely brilliant, and once you see how he did it, you think to yourself, well of course that's how you would fix it, but I never in a million yrs would have thought of that on my own.. what a creative mind..
