Woodturning: The Cookie Burl! 🍪
Ойын-сауық
This olive burl cookie had some nasty surprises on top of the tool-torturing nature of the wood itself, but it was well worth the fight. This was a commissioned project for one of my favorite clients, and so this piece is not for sale. One of the goals of this piece was to maintain the natural edge of the burl. As I found out in my recent video (“Exploding this burl for art”), it would have been almost impossible for an engrain olive burl to remain intact on the lathe without some form of stabilizer. TotalBoat penetrating epoxy was on point for this one, and of course my trusty Minwax wood hardener and Starbond CA glues were indispensable. Even though I got plenty of chip out from the end grain, I felt lucky when the piece was finally done.
Please let me know what you think of this project by leaving a comment below! I can't always respond to every comment, but I make time to read each one. I always appreciate feedback of any kind.

Why is KZread recommending me wood turning videos? There was a piece of wood in the top left in my screen I clicked and it brought me to a playlist of wood turning… I’m not upset, just confused 😂😂

At first I cringed thinking how dangerous it is to turn that material. But you certainly know what you're doing. Well done. You made it look so easy. Congratulations on a beautiful piece.

I always appreciated Claude Monet's comment: "People discuss my art and pretend to understand as if it were necessary to understand, when it's simply necessary to love." There is so much love in your work, David! Thank you for sharing it with us!
That’s one of the nicest serving trays I’ve ever seen. You truly did your magic and turned it into a masterpiece! Fantastic work! Bravo!
That's some amazing work, David. Thanks for sharing the process.
Always love your work. That burl was a beast, and I'm so glad it held together! Also love the reference. "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you." An excellent reminder.
