@@JackMackWoodturning Hello Jack. I think the wood being used should be allowed to dictate the finish as a general rule. However, the final use of the item, whether it needs to be food safe or “ornamental” is also a consideration. Then, of course, there is the use of resin and how this is turned into an embellishment of the wood. But you are the person doing the work and observing how your design is turning out. Also, you are a proper wood turner - I am just an interested observer who has a love of wooden objects - you know what you want and how you feel it should look. And, on that score, what I have seen of your work does not disappoint. So, in answer to your question, whatever finish you feel is right, will be right, and I will happily go along with that decision. Just sorry this is such a very long-winded response. 👍

@@JackMackWoodturning I took up watching wood turning during the lockdowns and got a bit “hooked” and have never really stopped since. I like the idea of learning to turn wood but, now at nearly 70, I’m probably a bit too old to learn - and the fingers are getting a bit arthriticy as well. Not sure. Possibly just an art piece - it’s reminiscent of a map from another world! Different lands never before seen and seas never sailed! Whatever it would eventually be used for I would stare at it and see new things all the time!

@@JackMackWoodturning I made a shallow bowl/plate about 10 inches diameter from ash last week and a small "bulb" shaped "vessel" from what I was told is rubber wood. I got this wood from George Barnsley a company in Sheffield that makes tool handles. Not far from where I live

@@JackMackWoodturning How did You do? A Sponge Cake is not an easy Cake to make. If You remember use "Cake Flour" instead of All-purpose flour and remember unsalted Butter 🧈 and fresh Eggs. Always check your Oven and make sure that the "Temperature" is Correct, sometimes Ovens can run High or slightly off. So purchase an Oven Thermometer. Just a few words to Help You out. @@JackMackWoodturning Jack, afraid I am in WA State . . . If I can, I'll try to take a picture of this oddity and send it to you. if you looked at ground rising from it is a shape like a neck with head (about the size of a smaller bowling ball) and the hair is either the result of some dead branches or roots; the wood MAY be spruce or Russian juniper. Let me know if that may be of interest to you.
