Woodturning - Feels like I am turning a ROCK
Ойын-сауық
Woodturning this incredible salmon gum burl into a live / natural edge bowl. Burrs has stunning grain characteristics and this blank no exception. Intense dark colours with plenty if voids give so much charter to this bowl. Turning this on the lathe felt like turning a piece of rock but eventually the carbide and HSS chisels cut through like hot knife…
At the end tiny feet was carved to the bottom and finished with mineral oil to really pop those stunning grains.

Personally would always prefer symmetry - but this is as beautiful as it is messy

Symmetry is not necessary in art. Actually things with symmetry are seldom art. Look at the face, even the 2 sides don’t match. This is beautiful
Wow! Absolutely amazing!!
Love the imperfect look!! The deep rich color, suits this piece well.

Wow you deserve a medal for turning that salmon gum burl - it looked so tough, like brick dust coming off it when you first started! I think it would make a lovely fruit bowl. Have you ever thought of encasing a live edge in a clear resin, you till see the live edge, but it'd be easier to keep dust free? 🥇👀👍

Thank you so much 😀 I have one more salmon gum burl and planning on combining with resin. But also scared, since it has soooo much voids I see already will have so many pockets after casting I need to deal with as will not be filled

I used to really enjoy wood turning, but the dust, raised heck with my breathing. 5:45
Have you tried turning ironwood? Its pretty darn hard but pretty when you're done.

I think you should’ve put some kind of sealer to fix those little holes but otherwise great job!
For a ‘Rock’ it turned out beautifully. Hmm, I wonder if you could turn an actual rock or would it shatter?

Thank you so much 😀 I actually turned some bricks in resin but the chisel could not cope… i ended up carving with a diamond disc on an angle grinder 😅

Which of your pieces are you most proud of?
Not a fan of live-edge myself. Would've added epoxy to make a symmetrical edge.

I have one more similar blank will do that with resin 😉
Do all woodturners just make bowls? That's all I see anymore.
Can't believe you ruined that bowl by carving feet
Beautiful piece! Love the grain of the wood. 🤎 What type of wood is that? I bet you had to sharpen those tools more than once! 😅
