Elms are exceptionally rare where I live - English elms are all sterile vegetative clones, making them particularly vulnerable to Dutch elm disease, so only a handful survive - I know of only one within twenty-five miles of my home. Seeing someone working with elm wood has been a treat. I love how the gunmetal grey resin allows the colours of the spalted wood come to the fore.

Lots of our tree's here are under attack in one form or another, thanks for watching!
That is completely and utterly stunning. Whoever bought it ended up with a work of art that will become an heirloom. Pieces like this never go out of fashion.

Thanks, I really appreciate it!
Elm trees and Dutch Elm disease: You are fortunate in that New York State lost just about all of its Elms starting heavily in the 1950's and carried on throughout the 1960's into the early 70's when all the known elms were dead and gone. By-the-way, elm boards were used extensively for flooring in horse stalls as it resisted horse urine.

That makes sense, they smell the same, lol. Don’t see any large Elms in this area anymore. Thanks!
Dang it Jim you've done it again. Again again? I've lost track of how many times you've absolutely knocked it out of the park.

That’s what I said to my wife last night. It totally looks like black granite, thanks!
For some reason, that piece really wanted the gun metal. I think it was the antique look of the wood that made gun metal such a great choice. I wish I had the space for that hollowing rig - sure looks slick! Thanks Jim!

Love the result of inverting the two halves. I was at the dentist the other day and enquired about their old scalers, after some assurance from me that I wouldn't attempt home dentistry and a short wood turning explanation I came away with a bag of around 20 of them so thanks for that suggestion. I noted that it appears you have a go jig and a separate no go jig. Why didn't you just cut the two notches from one piece of board and simply invert to check the second option?

It is on the same board, I just flip it around. Good luck cleaning teeth, lol. Thanks
Absolutely gorgeous. I love the wood grain patterns and how the resin swirls around them. As a very definite non-home-decorator, I wonder... how do people use these pieces in their homes? Simply as a stand-alone piece, or to hold things?
