I think it would be fun to do a mystery turn. The thumbnail being just a couple items, like a block of wood, bottle of resin and something like an object that might be associated with the final project… then we can watch to see what you come up with 🎉🎉

I did do a mystery wood one time but I can’t remember which video it was, lol. I will do it again in the future. Thanks for watching

Nailed it Jim. I've never seen a mesquite tree big enough to make a bowl that size. Most of the mesquite trees that you see are more scrub than trees.

We have lots of Mesquite wood in Texas. The piece you were sent is larger than most trees I see. I really enjoyed seeing the grain pattern come out. Most times Mesquite is used to flavor our bbq. Great job.

This is a seriously beautiful piece! I grew up in San Antonio, Texas and Mesquite trees are all over the place. They are great campfire and barbecue wood because they smell wonderful but I've seen some beautiful pieces of furniture made out of it too. I really love how you chose to work this bowl!

I admire you. I was once commissioned to build a gun stock out of Mesquite and will never forget how many times I had to sharpen my tools, it like to wore me out. Great job. Beautiful wood. Sand, Sand that's what Mesquite is known for / the wood is embeded with sand. LOL

Completely agreed, that contrast is perfect! The alabaster looks like mother of pearl to me.
Great work on the mesquite. It is one of my personal favorites. The look of an exotic with a local source. I mostly use it for pens and edge-grain cutting boards. Mesquite is known for voids which are commonly filled with black epoxy when used for flat work. To get a glass finish, I fill pores like it was oak with a slurry generated with sandpaper and sanding sealer.

Gotta love a natural inlay bowl... and BOY! DO I LOVE THAT BOWL! Taking nothing away from your gorgeous resin bowls etc. but it was the natural inlays that first attracted me to your channel. And we get another one next week.... anyone would think it's nearly Christmas! 🎄👏😂

I absolutely love the bowl Jim. I recently gave a couple of pieces to my wife’s consultant and he commented that wood turning is relaxing. Not for me, I always find something wrong and suffer angst about what I should have done. I’ve also splashed out in a new 2 hp lathe. Stay safe and best regards to yourself and your family 🌞

Designer epoxy That is a huge piece of mesquite! I have turned it but it was only bottle stopper sized and even that was iffy due to all the hair cracks that went with the grain without CA glue it would have gone in the barbeque. It was like turning a rock. But it was beautiful. The bowl was also beautiful. A nice inlay. Great video. I do like the way you throw in the safety tips. It is a bit of a shock to find yourself attached to a bowl. Been down that path before. Also reminding folks about a respirator. I watched another channel and the fellow wore a face mask which save your eyes but not your lungs. Resin would stay in your lungs forever reminding you of being an unsafe wood turner. Great job. Lovely bowl.

That's a nice bowl you have there. I am a little late to the conversation but just came across this video. I live in South Texas and there is an abundance of mesquite here. I have a good size ranch and mill hardwoods that grow on it, mesquite being one of them. Don't be fooled but they can get pretty big . The problem with them I'd they they don't grow straight. Lots of twist and turns in them and burls are common. It's wonderful wood to work with and is one that you can cut and turn green and it's so stable unlike most other woods. One big down side it the stress cracks have in then along with the pith. There are a lot of inclusions found in mesquite as well as holes where ants and beetles have bored them.i have a couple of 30"+ logs I need to mill soon. The wood can vary in color from a light pink to a deep red or maroon. Burls and crotch wood have some outstanding figure in them.

Designer Epoxy Another GREAT video Jim. You made the Texas mesquite proud. Love the contrasting colors. I normally use a sanding paste and polishing wax on the Texas Mesquite. That seems to work very well. Something like Cortland Hunts product or maybe Acts products. Yes, Texas Mesquite is a lot harder wood than your Maples and Walnuts. But I really like the finished turnings. Now you can gift the bowl to your lovely wife as a Christmas gift from Texas and you. Johnny

She just might get it, lol. Thanks again for sending this beautiful wood to me! Jim
Some 14-15 years ago I twice went to the Desert Round Up woodturning symposium in Mesa, AZ where they turned a lot of mesquite with genuine turquoise inlays the pieces were stunning, their designs were heavily influence by native Indian pottery. When I came back I turned several such pieces myself but for some unknown reason they were not readily accepted here in northeast galleries.

That definitely came from a very, very large mesquite tree. I've only ever seen one bigger, and it's right behind my house, growing next to a drainage ditch that runs shallowly down a steep hillside. Stays moist all year round (unusual in TX), yet has good drainage. It's about 3 feet wide, a rarity for sure. It's cool to see evidence of other giant mesquite trees out there.

Of course~! I watch all your new videos, and watch as many of your older ones as I can so far. Living in Ottawa, it's wonderful to see such talented people that live so close to my family. I have family all over the Ottawa Valley, from Arnprior, Smith's falls, etc. But I would love to go out to Petawawa sometime just to look at the stuff that you have in person, because I know pictures never do things justice.
i like that you turned some mesquite. I live in Texas and mesquite is a common tree here. Though I am not a woodturner, I do make things out of mesquite. Beautiful wood that polishes well. As for cooking with it, I always say the flavor comes from all the ants and beetle larvae in the wood. Haha. This bowl you turned is beautiful. Thanks for sharing your nice work.
