Woodturning a small Live Edge Bowl

This maple bowl is 2" high, 4" wide and 5" long.
Finished with Bullseye shellac.
“Many of the woods I use are from trees that ay for construction. This is wood that would otherwise be burned or end up in a landfill.
To me, it is exciting to find the hidden beauty in a chunk of wood. Even a very plain piece of wood offers design opportunities. When working with plain wood, I often enhance the wood by carving or burning. My carved and burned designs mimic textures and patterns found in nature.

Nice way to start the morning, watching someone else create a beautiful little live edge bowl ... I'm not sure which bit is the hardest to turn, the wood or the air 😁👍

I love working with crotch blanks. Since the best part of the feather is always at the pith plane, I try to plan my turning to have the area just above the pith as the bottom of the inside. So if I am going to have a foot or mortise, I try to get the pith right where it will get turned away. Yes, it makes a shallower finished piece, but always stunning. Nice job turning this natural edge and good repair on the bark!

Thanks! This is the first time I've seen one of my own pieces with a feather, just too bad that I turned it away! But now I know where to watch for it, and plan on a shallower dish, like you said! But it was a recovered piece of branch, and very small, so not a big deal. Heather 🇨🇦

Yahoo Bronco! Hold On! Lol. The first couple minutes of turning a log is so much fun isn't it? JK. Great turn as usual. Watching you come along the way you have is inspiring. You seem to challenge yourself...and us with every project you post. Thanks for sharing. Keep up the good work.

Nicely done Heather. It’s not always easy to watch for the feather and stop before turning it away. You came out with a pretty bowl just the same. Merry Christmas!

Really nice Heather. My wife tells me we already have too many of these so I stopped making them. For the market perhaps. Any idea if they would sell? 😎

They sell fairly well here Leo. But I don't charge a high price for them, as I live in a rural area. If I lived in a city, I'd be able to sell them for a higher price.

I've got a chunk just like that Heather - mebbe an inch bigger across - but I know what to do with it now, woo hoo ! Merci beaucoup ( or is it mercy bowcue in Quebecois ?). Take care. -Mike p.s. I was trying to read that strangely French looking kalandryé

Glad I could inspire you Mike! Just try to save the feather grain if you can. The strange french on the calendar is actually called Michif. It's a mix of French Canadian and Anishenabec (native American), that the Metis people used to speak. The Metis, are trying to bring back the lost language.

@@spiritwynd I never knew about the feather - something new to wonder about; thanks, And I think we discussed the Métis before; again new knowledge. 👍😎
