Woodturning 2x4 fridge art

These 2 pieces were made from 2 scrap pieces of pine 2x4, both turned at the same time.
“Many of the woods I use are from trees that are cut down for construction. This piece just happens to be from that construction. This is wood that would otherwise be burned or end up in a landfill.
To me, it is exciting to find the hidden beauty in a chunk of wood. Even a very plain piece of wood offers design opportunities. When working with plain wood, I often enhance the wood by carving or burning. My carved and burned designs mimic textures and patterns found in nature.

Looks really good Heather - the gel stain + the carve-outs + and then the 2-for-1 magic ! Wonderful ! Thanks for showing us the way. Take care. -Mike

Cute fridge magnets, Heather. I use two pieces of the brown Amazon paper in the middle of pieces I split. It makes it easier to get them apart. With thicker brown paper, like paper bags, one layer works nicely.

Happy New Year ... hope 2024 is even better for you than 2023 👍.... 33:15 bless you 🤣 I liked the knurling and I think it'd have worked out better if you'd coated the entire piece in wax to fill in the low spots then sanded to remove the wax from the high spots and applied the ink ... that would have kept the ink from soaking into the dents ... but what you eventually did was just as good 😀 I'm wondering if the blue tape and superglue trick would work better than the brown paper, I'll need to try it at some point! I'd suggest a longer piece of copper wire when burning the rings, it'll let you put more pressure on the piece and therefore more friction 😁

Don’t cut the tenon off till you split the piece. That way the chisel won’t damage the actual piece.
