Woodturning a Red Oak Box

A change in design brought about this box design. My advice to a beginner carver.. don't start with oak! I should have taken a picture of the failed attempt, but I forgot about doing that.

Many of the woods I use are from trees that are cleared for construction. This is wood that would otherwise be burned or end up in a landfill.
To me, it is exciting to find the hidden beauty in a chunk of wood. Even a very plain piece of wood offers design opportunities. When working with plain wood, I often enhance the wood by carving or pyrography.

Crappy hot glue ...a couple of six inch nails would've held that lid on 🤣 I get that same moment of anticipation every time when the finish is about to be applied, just adds so much to the piece, beautiful 👍

Such a nice little pot. I thought you were going for a taller finial and was all set to say you turned it from the wrong direction. But you didn’t. You turned a very nice knob for it. Excellent! I like the wood combination as well. Super job.

Thanks Doug. I should have turned the finial separately from the lid and attached it after, it still worked out ok, but would have been easier

Red Oak!? It grows here too and recently I got some of it. Great stuff for turning. 😎 That vibrating noise? I think it is the adapter between lathe & chuck. I already noticed it adds a considerable amount of length to your workpiece. Maybe you should try to get a shorter one.

A lovely looking project, well executed Heather. Have you thought of a bearing change. Some lathes require a change regularly

Hi Heather where do you find the bones you use in some of you projects if you would be so inclined to say thanks in advance

They are beef soup bones that anyone can purchase from any butcher shop. Also if you happen to know of any hunters, you could speak to them about getting a leg bone from deer or moose. Hope this helps! Heather 🇨🇦

I can't hear these noises your lathe is making Heather (I'm watching on my phone which has poor sound) but I know that belt driven machinery sometimes makes funny squeaks when the belts are worn or get out of adjustment. Dabbing a teeny amount of oil on a belt usually quietens it but that really is only for diagnostic purposes. Well, it's just a suggestion, I know you'll get it sorted out eventually.

Thanks Mark! I might try the oil trick. It kinda sounds like harmonics that you get if you're turning far from the headstock without support, but the bowl is very shallow. I'll figure it out eventually

Personally I wouldn't put oil near a belt, it might stop the noise but that'll most likely be because it's now slipping!
