    Nice looking box! People ask me if I see the finished shape in the wood I am turning. I do, but most of the time the wood tells me what the shape will be. I think that happened here. Your real talent is seeing what the wood is showing you what to do! It's as good as your incredible tool control!

    That is a fantastic little box. I really like the little details you add, especially the bead you put on it to hide the misalignment of the 2 pieces. I am not very good with a skew, but it is amazing what someone who can use a skew can do with one.

    Thank you for the video! I've noticed a small inaccuracy that I had to learn the hard way: don't fit the lid before you've hollowed the body. There might be some tension in the wood or is it because of the heat... but just yesterday I've spoiled couple of boxes in this way. I made a nice and tight tennon for the lid, hollowed the body and after that the lid became loose, like veeery loose...

  • @tomislavtomasicwoodturning

    @tomislavtomasicwoodturning

    That is good point, I always fit lids so its hard to put it on, that usually gives enough room to play,also roughing out blanks helps a lot

    Very nice little box. I always appreciate the way you include enough detail to make it very interesting. You will have to let us know if the wood moves and how the fit stays over time. I find I always have to rough turn boxes, let them move and then finish them in a day or two. But that could be my really dry wood inventory.

    You take a tool that really frightens a lot of wood turners. Namely the skew and make it look so easy. To use the skew where most would use a roughing gouge shows your skill and I am really impressed. A great video that makes me want to keep practicing with the skew and hopefully become nearly as good as you. Overall a thing of beauty.

  • @jeffspaulding9834

    @jeffspaulding9834

    My advice for the skew is to just jump in and use it. That's what I did - I used only a roughing gouge and skew for the first few months I did woodturning. And yeah, I had a lot of catches and tore out a lot of wood, but since I was new and only using firewood as blanks it wasn't a big deal. Eventually you stop getting catches and you feel comfortable with it - to the point I'll reach for the skew over a gouge for most spindle operations. Honestly, the skew is such a versatile tool that it's a pity so many people are scared of it. Yeah, the catches freak you out and tear out good sized chunks of wood, but as long as you've got your shield on you're fine. Find a free source of blanks and it only costs you time and electricity. We just drive around after storms and find fallen branches and ask if we can haul them off. Cut 'em into spindle blanks, paint the ends and pile 'em up somewhere to dry for a year or so and you've got an endless supply of free wood for spindle projects.

It's your finger to do with what you want, but it could severely injure you in an instant. All's well that ends well though. Nice box and turning demo.

    This tool is called square end scraper, it has bevel of 45 deegres and its used 99% of the time flat on tool rest, so the edges are factory, just so they are not sharp.... On this perticular job I'm using only top left point of the scraper ,that is why I raise the rest higher, otherwise on small diameter the bottom will hit first.
