Woodturning a Maple Burl Bowl: BEAUTIFUL GRAIN!
This week I turned a maple burl bowl blank. The figure and burl in this wood was very beautiful.

You are absolutely right - beautiful grain and a beautiful bowl. It's always exciting to turn a burl with all the bark inclusions: how far do you want to go knowing that you can't put the shavings back to the log. I admire your work - thank you for sharing your videos. Warm greetings - Peder

I am not joking! I believe that you could raise the money if you would just ask. I am retiring on a fixed income with plenty going out but I could find $20.00 and donate it toward a bowl saver. Just ask. People actually want to help just don't have much to give.

Great burl bowl. you can cut some wood out by useing a parting tool at an angle from the edge to the center of the blank not as good as a bowl saver but not bad, with practice you can get a good piece out.

That is a very nice bowl and good choice on not coloring it. The next bowl or vase you do that has nice grain in it, try using a Danish oil. I use Watco Danish oil natural, they do have it in colors like amber and mahogany, etc but I have only used the natural. I find it makes the grain "POP" even more. I get it at my local big orange box store. Merry Christmas to you and your family

I love maple burl. Now if you had that One-Way Coring system, You could have had 3-4 bowls. I am sorry, I didn't hear you add your Santa's wish until I had already mentioned the coring system. Maybe, Santa heard us both. Merry Christmas.

Hi Michael. Thanks. Depends on the cost of the the wood and other things. I sell some of them in my online Etsy Shop (this one is not on there yet). www.etsy.com/shop/PFwoodturningCo
Hi Peggy that was a gorgeous piece of wood turned into a gorgeous bowl. I’ve been subscribing to your channel for about 3 months now and don’t regret It! I love your camera work and gentle informative commentary. Just one thing I’ve noticed....do you ever use a faceplate rather than a wormscrew? I’m not nearly as talented or experienced as you but my inclination for a piece this size would be to use a faceplate. Any comments?
@PFWoodturning
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Joe. Thanks for watching. I've used face plates at times, I just always gravitate towards the worm screw--I've had very good luck with it. But you're right, as the pieces get bigger, a face plate would be safer!
Hopefully Santa has you on his good list!! Great job as always. It's a beautiful bowl. Did you have any problem with the And products glomming up in the burl defects?
@PFWoodturning
4 жыл бұрын
Ha! Thanks. No problems with the Ack's products, they work great, it's mostly the dust that gets in the burl, which is why I used the air gun.
Love your channel! Enjoy your voice! I wouldn't mind hearing some of the "noise" from the turning during the video - the silence is weird sometimes. Either way, my question is, why do you use negative rake carbide cutters?
@PFWoodturning
4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Ryan! I use the negative rake mostly on resin or very hard woods.
Great job on the bowl,just subscribed.Thinking about getting a better lathe to do the work you do,any ideas ?

I criticized you on your last video for slapping paint on a really nice blank, so happy you didn't on this one. A beautiful burl, well turned and finished which really enhanced the grain.

Ha! Can't lie, I was tempted.
I thought the shape of your bowl was rather unattractive with the near straight sides and flat bottom. IMO, a turned foot would have elevated the design and made it more appealing rather than a slightly curved "dog bowl". Also not sure why you spend so much time trueing up the sides when you turn most away. Your turning & finishing technique is a joy to watch.
