Woodturning: The Root Burl!

Ойын-сауық

There were so many ways to orient this unique piece of Manzanita root burl on the lathe, and I had originally intended not to use epoxy resin. However, when it was clear that I could not achieve the shape I was going for without losing too much of the character from this wood, I had to bite the bullet, as they say, and throw this piece into some delicious plastic.
Let me know what you think of this piece by leaving a comment below! I read all of them and respond to as many as I can.
Thanks to Total Boat for the thickset epoxy! This stuff worked wonders and did not crack, even though I poured almost 3 liters of resin and a 7 inch deep pour. I never had to fill a single crack with filler or CA glue (discount/affiliate link below).

Hi, I live in Iran, almost until six to seven years ago, when for some reason I had to quit my job. I am both a woodcarver and a carpenter. The smell of wood, the smell of wood turning, the smell of resin, how does it feel, hand art is really indescribable, I congratulate this artist and wish him success.👌👌👌👏👏👏

Manzanita grows wild all over Northern California, it's one of the hardest bushes / trees to pull out of the ground that anyone has ever seen. My father used a 200 ton excavator and almost pulled the excavator over while trying to remove a root from one.

I firmly believe that you are half correct. David did a great job with this piece, better than anything that I could hope to do, but I don't believe that there is only ONE "right person" for that root burl. I think that any talented artisan/craftsman who owned that root burl would be the "right person" and would bring out their own unique vision of beauty from it. Let's say the multiverse is real and infinite. If that root was handed to a different artisan/craftsman in each universe, or even if it was handed to the David of each universe, a different yet beautiful piece will be produced in each case. That's one of the great things about creativity... it has NO LIMITS. If David was handed an identical root burl I doubt that he would want to create a second urn/vase that mirrored what he had already created. Where would the fun be in that? Anyway, I don't know much, but I know that have never wanted to duplicate something that I have already created. Great job David.

Your worries (yes, anxiety), depression, suicidal thoughts, EVERYTHING will melt away and be NO MORE when you lean on God and put your trust in him! When I have physical pain, I literally pray and the Lord quells it, that I am healed! Know that there is power in the name Jesus Christ! His name casts out demons and heals! People are bothered by his name. The world hates the truth and wants to continue living sinfully! God's children are set apart (holy) and righteous.

I needed this tonight. In a crazy way It's a beautiful way to end a night when I have been mourning my sister who was killed last year. To see that root go from It's natural state, ripped out of the ground, then cut, turned, poured over, cut some more, shaped, and polished feels a lot like my heart right now. The process so painful, but so carefully watched by the Creator. He knows what the end result will be from the very beginning; something more beautiful and lasting than what you started with. Thank you for this. I can sleep now. 🤍

@@AkshaySharma-ut6rv yup. Saw a video of a guy who got too close and it barely caught the tip of his sleeve and within half a second his shoulder was being pulled with the part. Luckily the part was long and also not secured properly because instead of being rigid and ripping his arm off it came loose and someone had been close by to quickly pull him away. And only a few months ago at my work this girl's shirt was ripped clean off by a lathe. Only reason she didn't go with is because someone was also with her to pull her away. That's why I had so much anxiety with this video lol
