Can I get a witness... if you didn't point it out, we wouldn't notice that it's not supposed to look like that. I still love it, the walnut is beautiful and the white is perfect for winter. Great piece, don't beat yourself up.

I'll witness for you - Ken does GREAT work, but like all artists, all HE can see are the "flaws." If I could afford it - fair wage for his labor, wood, resin, electricity, wear and tear on tools and equipment, other related expenses - I would have him send his "mistakes" to ME.

Just a crazy idea, and it'd probably take a REALLY long time to do, but what if you did a WHOLE BUNCH of small pours to deliberately get these witness lines? Might look really crazy/cool.

Duuuuude, the last one sold in 15 minutes, because it was AWESOME. This one is too. Having the witness line actually works really well on this one because of the sorta geometric V-shape that the bowl and resin form. 15:20 is a great shot of what I'm talking about. The sharpness of that point plays into having the line running around it as well. Regardless, still another really, really cool project. Sorry you've got to make another one for that client, but I see that Summers already beat my wife to buying this one, so it won't be homeless.

Great bowl in spite of the line. Just spitballing but... could pour less resin the first time so that the top of the blank isn't covered? Then the joint with the second pour would only show on the outside before it was turned. Good luck on your next attempt! Stuart

What about using a skew to etch out a shallow groove around the witness mark. Fill with colored epoxy. Sand and finish? Could look spiffy. Or more metallic resin ?

Man, all your stuff is honestly just phenomenal. I don't really mind the witness lines? They are kinda neat looking, in this pearl pigment it looks like cloud layers or something. It would kinda be neat to play around with making intentional lines... I'm imagining a wood chunk shaped like the one here, using a darker blue pour on the bottom and a light blue on top to look like mountain lakes :D

What about stabilizing the wood with cactus juice (and sealing the junk wood with cheap spray) so less of the resin will get sucked up, thus leaving more and maybe not having to do a second pour?

I think an issue is that the resin gets pushed into cracks and then when the resin hardens it shrinks some. The Cactus Juice would work, but I have to buy separate equipment for that. Ken

Another great piece! Have you thought about sealing your wood ("paint-on" a layer of epoxy and let cure prior to pouring) prior to pouring that way you maximize your initial pour without the epoxy seeping into the wood to get rid of the witness lines you've been getting? Either way, great piece and keep on turning!

That's not a bad idea at all. I will see if it helps, but most of the wood I have has cracks in it that soak up a bunch of the resin. hmmmmmm I will have to test it to see. Thanks. Ken

Ken, really neat looking even with the line in the resin. Could part of the problem be that the ratio of the amount of pearl coloring be different between the two pours? I wonder how it would look if you made a small shallow groove right where the line is? Like they say, if you can’t hide it accentuate it. Enjoyed the video and looking forward to the next attempt.

Hey Paul, Yes I think part of it is the amount of pigment. The two will look slightly different if the saem amount is not put in. But even when that happens you cannot physically feel the witness line. Definitely the mold release I used. I changed to another buck and now issues. The groove is a good idea though. Ken

Nice job. Don't you know it's pacon not peecan, lol, dead givaway, If you will pour your second pour when the first is just tackie you won't get that witness line and it won't bleed into the first. I also noticed you are one of the few that use you round cutter at an angle as I do. It does a better job even if the manufacturers tell you to hold it flat. Take care and keep it up. Larry

I usually pour at night before I go to bed, so I'm not able to get back to it. I may try that though. But I think I have figured out how to minimize the line. I pour a small pour then pour the larger one. The witness line ends up below the wood as it fills in the cracks and stuff. I get a better cut with the round cutter at an angle. lol. Ken

Maybe if you try knocking off the shine, give a little tooth to the top of the first pour, before the second pour, the line won't be as noticeable? or at all (Hope) lol :)

I have noticed that you used a thick set on this project and on some of the previous projects you used the 2:1. Total Boat also has a 5:1 and penetrating formula. Any guidance on the pros and cons of these different formulations?

Hey Tom, I love all three. The Thickset is better for large pours or pours without a pressure pot. It's thin so there are less bubbles. It takes a few days to harden all the way. The 2:1 Slow is great for medium pours using a pressure pot. This is my go to resin. It hardens in about 8 hours and is crystal clear. It takes pigments and dyes very well. The 5:1 is harder to work with as it is harder when cured. I tend to get more tear out with it, but it is cheaper and still gives a great finished product. If you do purchase some feel free to use MPC20 for 20% off. Ken

You gotta make sure the blank knows whos in charge. lol I didn't use any this time. But I did use the same bucket so I think there was residue from the mold release on it. I am using a new bucket now and it seems to be fine. Ken

Nice I have some 100 year old black walnut traded for making a bowl for guys wife it had a mini ball from civil war in wood I left it in there was off of family farm I’m going to have to something like this with smaller pieces I hav laying around

I know this is pretty old, but what about working out a way to incorporate the witness mark into the design? Maybe you could use a plastic the resin doesn't stick to in a way to create a wavy line or something.

Moonpie Creations nothing, and none of us, is perfect. These ‘flaws’ that you see add character and uniqueness to your pieces. It’s easy to see how much care you put into your art. Oh, and tell your girlfriend, btw, she’s right. 😉

Its a beautiful bowl Ken. I love the shape of the transition👍. On the witness line, how long are you waiting between pouring the next layer. Also are you measuring out ur pigment in equal parts between pours to get a more uniform match?

Thanks. I do not measure out the pigment and I think that is a big issue. I am going to do a better job at that. I usually wait about 12 or more hours between pours because I pour before I head in for the night. Then I don;t get back out till after I get home from work. Ken

@@MoonpieCreations The resin I have been using has a specific timeframe for layer pouring, I think 3 hours so the resin is still a bit jelled maybe to give a more consistent bond? I know when I made my nightlight it was super clear without a line in sight, but I also wasn't using a pigment so that may make a difference.

It's hard to judge, because the casting process takes days. But I think somewhere around 12-16 hours depending on sanding, type of wood, or if I have any issues. Ken

Tom, depends on what you are calling large pours? I have poured 3400g for a bowl with no issues, But Thinkset is better suited for the larger pours.

I ended up pouring a 3600g pour nad it paid off. The customer didn't ask not to have it but these aren't regular witness lines. They could be felt and seen more than normal. Ken

Them witness lines are much more tolerable if you use multi colored layers. I use 3 to 4 colors with diferent mica's also, and the transitions are pleasing to the eye. Love how you finished the bottom. Still a quality piece bro. P.S.- Don't be a Dick.

Brother, you need a gram kitchen scale. About $15 at Walmart. Follow me here: Your first pour was 2000 g. You added, let's say for argument, 15 g of pearlescent dye powder. Your second pour was 400g, one fifth of your first pour. So you add 3g of dye powder. And maybe, just maybe, you don't get a witness mark. And it only cost you $15 to find out.

Thanks for the advice. I do have a gram scale. That is what I use for pouring. I will admit I do not use it much for pigments though. A real problem is that I use pearlescent powders and the swirls in them make the witness line more pronounced. But in this case it was the demolding spray residue. Ken
