Wood Turning - Miniature crankshaft goblet. Multi-axis Woodturning.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hello and welcome to the channel. In this video I take an off-cut of beech counter-top and on the woodturning lathe, remake one of my earlier projects but on a much smaller scale.
Turned on three separate but parallel axis, this piece looks like a small crankshaft or like the goblet sat on top of a stack of small wooden coins.
My original, earlier piece can be seen here: • Woodturning an eccentr...
Here is a much cleaner and larger version as a candle stick: • Multi Axis Wood Turnin...
The whole project took approximately 20 minutes and I have kept most of the footage at it's original speed however, the initial rounding of the blank and subsequent changing of axis has been sped up by 4 times.
A little light sanding off camera and a coat of flaxseed oil to finish.
Couple of hiccups during the process, skew chisel catch (spiral) and I almost lost it again whilst adjusting the tool rest, thankfully neither ending in profanity.

Lol I’ve gotta try that! Not done off centre turning before. I’m usually struggling to get stuff to run true and not intentionally running off axis. Well done bud.

Thanks Dave! This is the most common catch I get with the skew and seeing it from this angle was really interesting, hopefully it taught me something lol. Thanks for popping by mate!

Goblet of wood, nerves of steel. My heart is in my mouth the whole time when you do one of these off-centre pieces, especially when you bumped the tool rest into the wood! I was sure that was the end of it! Cheers Pog, brilliant work, great vid and an education, all as usual. Thanks.

Haha cheers Mark! Yeah that was a bit of a daft fumble on my part, was convinced it was curtains too! I considered cutting it out of the final video but if it helps someone avoid it then it's worth keeping in there, y'know. Thanks for popping in buddy, always a pleasure!

Very cool! Will try that today. I’ve done a few offset turns but never by taking off 2 jaws and sliding it back and forth in the chuck. Very simple and easy! Thanks for this. Just a suggestion, slow down the lathe quite slowly to sand those sharp edges. The slow speed allows the sandpaper to get down into offset disks rather than bouncing off the tips. Also it would be nice to get some info on your process and which way you slide the piece and approximately how far from center. I think I have it figured out but hearing or seeing it in the video would be helpful. Take care! Scott

Thanks Scott! With this one it was more about just getting through it without snapping, the sanding was a very much a secondary thought. I took far more care over a bigger candle stick version which is linked in the description. From memory I rounded the spindle in the center position then only moved it from side to side about 3 or 4mm. The jaws made small grooves in the wood so it was easy to see where I had previously gripped the piece. Let me know how you got on with it, thanks for watching!

That is a nice idea. While watching projects like this I always wonder: Did you succeed the very first time or did you need multiple attempts?

  • @tfturning

Thank you sir! I turned one approximately 12 inches tall last April which had many failed attempts leading up to it. This one went a lot smoother with no breakages and only 3 attempts until I was happy. The type of wood definitely helps too. Thanks for watching!
