3:00 THANK YOU DAN for talking about the budget being lower/return on investment! So many times when international films come to the US they get compared negatively to Hollywood films with bigger budgets!

Yeah. But still, what does it matter? Sure, investors and studios are making a good return. But at the end of the day, ain't that many tickets sold. So what does "doing good" mean? Making money; drawing audiences; winning awards? Rarely does a movie do more than one of those.
@DanMurrellMovies

It matters as much as you care that it matters. I love The Creator even though it didn't do well, wasn't particularly well received, and will likely get no awards. This is a show about business, so that's my focus. It's performing well financially - in this context, that's what "doing good" means.

Wake up babe!
I would not be upset if Charts was delayed next week. I think seeing how the movies did on Monday and Tuesday makes sense. (Seems like a lot of businesses have Tuesday as a holiday this year)
The end of this year was hurt badly by Dune Part II getting delayed. That was going to be the big blockbuster for the end fall/winter and is going to be a movie people are going to go out of their way to see in IMAX. Could have used that for this holiday.
I can appreciate how 10 years ago I wouldn't care about an international film but recently with Minus One, RRR, etc im enjoying it and some have been my tops for the years. 😅
You can't fool me! That wasn't Dan Murrell! That imposter wasn't wearing a plaid flannel shirt!
Absolutely watch Paddington 1 and 2. They are just so dang good in all the best ways. Absolutely ridiculous and silly, cute and fun, entertaining and well written despite or because of the extremely hammy villains in each. I put off watching them until the hype around the hype had mostly worn down, but honestly, believe the hype. Yes, they are children's movies, but if you let that hold you back from the sweetest movies you've seen in a long time, you are doing yourself a disservice. See Paddington!

[Dan uploading a new video after returning from a 1 year hiatus where he was stranded on a desert island] The comment section: Was R-I-ET-E there?
Dan, when 16 people are correcting your pronunciation, you know you're doing something right.
I had no expectations for Wonka because I'm so tired of unnecessary prequels, but seeing people's fairly positive reviews makes me glad to see it is doing well. I'm probably going to wait and watch at home since there are not a lot of movies I get to see during the holidays (too damn busy), and other films are at the top of my list.
Godzilla Minus One is a genuinely phenomenal film and one of the best of the year. I am saying that as someone who goes to the theater like every other week.
Yes, Dan, the work never stops! 😂 Thanks, and sorry for those who hounded you about Arriety!😅
I once did a presentation at Uni on Art Deco cinemas so your shout-out to Vista was lovely. Here's to watching The Majestic for Christmas. Thank you for all of your content this year.
Dunki will also release this week
It was a great movie. I was pleasantly surprised.
Nice to see Wonka actually doing well, as well Godzilla Minus One and The Boy and the Heron.
Great Band Name - Premature Declaration of Closure.

This is a special magical time coming in single digit minutes after the video dropped. I feel honored
Brilliant video Dan, merry Christmas!
The Vista was my favorite theater when I lived in LA. I used to live right around the corner, so I could walk there. But I would've driven through LA traffic to go there, if I'd needed to. It's such an amazing theater, and it's one of the things I miss most about LA. I can still walk to my local movie theater, but even with the IMAX and RPX, multiple screens, etc., this one doesn't come anywhere close to the Vista.
If I may, I would like to recommend an independent theater. It is called The Independent Picture House and is located in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Closing it prematurely? The Errors Tour!
Utterly beautiful to see this
Just want to take this moment to say thanks for your earlier comments about keeping minus one's success in perspective in light of the vfx situation over there
I had a good laugh about Arrietty. Still chuckle at the Pokémon pronunciation. 🤭
Yaaaay, finally a local Indie Theater. The Vista is such a such a great movie house. I'm actually heading down to see Zone Of Interest tomorrow or Thursday (meant to go over the weekend but ended up not having time), and going to it's sister theater, The New Beverly, tonight for Children of Men and Snowpircer. I was actually there on opening night for Thanksgiving. Eli Roth + Cast came down to intro the film and then the sound constantly cut in and out throughout the entire film. Also, during the 3rd act the reel randomly jumped to the exact moment the killer was revealed, and then reset itself to where it was originally, which was incredibly funny. Definitely not the ideal way to see the film, but an unforgettable and actually rather fun one, and they gave us free tickets and shirts after the screening which was cool. They also just announced that they are going to be playing Part 2 of Dune in March, which is very exciting.
Favourite box office wrapup!
Hero 2002 is a very beautiful and well made film. Soundtrack is great as well.

The model at 8:00 clearly shows viewership fundamentals may have shifted. 2015-2019/2021-2022 look like moderate rollercoasters with some peaks and gentle dropoffs. But 2023 is a field of spikes, almost like stalagmites. I think this goes in line with my theory that folks really do have to be pickier with their ticket purchases, especially if they are families. Basically, your billion-dollar blockbuster has to be a MUST SEE, has to instill FOMO, to warrant spending the amount of a utility bill on going to the movies.
@troyen3869

Eh, that could also be just from averaging five years of data. If you looked at just 2019's data there'd be a bunch of spikes too, including an extreme one from Endgame that gets smoothed out when combined with several other years.

Dan I just went to the vista for the first time LAST NIGHT before even watching this episode so that’s kinda awesome and ironic
2:28 I just got back from seeing Godzilla Minus One (in the UK, where I think it came out later than in the US, as it just became available via MUBI GO on Friday). I thought it was really good, though perhaps not as good as some of the hype suggested. Nice touch discussing the budget and gross in yen - it can be truthfully said to have made billions! (Insert joke about Godzilla saying "It's Godzilling time" and Godzilling all over everyone.)
Haven't seen Godzilla Minus One or The Boy and the Heron yet. Planning on doing a Japanese language double-feature this weekend before they leave theaters.

So excited for the Boys in the Boat!
Hi from Ohio, Dan!
I really hope that Godzilla Minus One gets another run on IMAX screens and that Toho puts some serious effort into its VFX campaign at the Oscars. really disappointed that it wasn't deemed eligible for Best Original Score given the repurposing of the original Godzilla themes, but I'm hoping it gets nominated for and goes on to win the Best VFX Oscar. I'd personally put it comfortably in my top 10 of the year alongside Oppenheimer, KOTFM, The Boy and The Heron, Suzume, Past Lives, Anatomy of a Fall, etc, but I know a Best Picture nom isn't happening, so I'd really love to see it get recognized in Best VFX.

Not sure if it’s the sort of video you’d be interested in making, but would love to see a breakdown on what each film’s budget is actually spent on. Especially the massive budget films. Is it paying actors/ marketing/ CGI? Would love to see how the money is divided up!
The Paddington films are criminally under appreciated.
I hope this movie and The Color Purple can put musicals back on track in theaters again. Ever since the failure of Cats, live action musicals haven't been doing well at the box office lately eventhough there are some good ones that deserved a lot of money so it was a breath of fresh air to see that Wonka wins big especially for the holiday season
Thanks again for all the brilliant analysis! I want to repeat my hope that you’ll get a chance to do a full franchise analysis on Trolls Band Together; it seems to be sneaking into the top five week after week without anyone really commenting. I’d love to know whether its performance is a win in the context, and whether it represents a bounce back for DWA after the Ruby Gillman debacle. But, I know you have a lot to get through with Aquaman coming up! I’ll be watching, whatever you cover.
"2010 The Year we make contact" is a really good movie. It just had the bad luck of following one of the best movies of all time.
2:24 Would be cool to see a comparison to see how Godzilla Minus One is doing compared to Shin Godzilla.
I would say Faramir and Dewey Cox are more obviously second favourite children.
Wrong Matilda Dan! The 90s version was actually beat by the musical version from last year - it made almost $35mil worldwide. I think it was mainly a Netflix release in the US which is why you forgot about it, but in most of the rest of the world we got it as a full cinema run where it did really well.

It's not one I've personally been to very often, but some of my best movie memories were at drive-ins--one of my earliest movie memories is watching ET at a drive-in.

yeah its so nice seeing Godzilla still doing well and ya know i know people say that Hollywood should learn from Japan on how to make a Godzilla movie and some of that i get but also i want hollywood to be different then what Japan is doing personally but i do hope that not just with Godzilla but really with all movies that hollywood understands why the movie did so well under the surface of it all like how it built the movie not just around the monster and the stars in the movie but the story and characters that holds it all together because a lot of studios can learn to do that not just Legendary or Disney all studios need to learn that lesson
Caught Wonka, about what I expected. Curious to see if it has legs. I did get a 2nd. screening of Godzilla in as well (my contribution to the Monday box office for this week). I am ticked off about scheduling though, Wonka was deemed so scary that little else opened wide, and now Christmas weekend is packed. I'm trying to schedule in Poor Things, Aquaman, Ferrari and the Iron Claw. And that's just what I plan on seeing. I can understand 'the Color Purple' and Migration, but would it have been so bad if Poor Things or the Iron Claw opened wide this last weekend. It does make me wonder if distributors are smelling blood in the water with Aquaman and loaded it with counterprogramming.

That's an interesting point about Aquaman. I think I saw the first trailer a few months back, but since then I have seen no marketing for it. I realize that is just my point of view, but as someone who consumes a lot of geek content, I generally see adverts... but for Aquaman, nothing.

@@mathsalot8099 I go to the movies frequently, and that trailer is a constant, especially for I-Max showings. It is also a fairly common commercial on television. The marketing seems to be a very traditional approach. Should also expect cast to do the late night circuit, if they haven't already.

25:53 Hey Dan - would you please spotlight the Avon Cinema on Thayer Street in Providence, Rhode Island? Thank you!
Hey Dan! How much do you think movies being released on streaming services for just the subscription price hurt their box office totals? Do you think it would be better for the studios to adopt the policy of: No movie shall be released for free on any streaming service until 365 days after it has been available to a wide, general audience for a fee. So for instance, on the first day when Mulan was released to Disney+ for $20, that would start the clock and Disney wouldn't be able to remove that $20 fee until 365 days later. For movies released into theaters, those can't be available to watch for "free" until 365 days after its first day of release (regardless of country). I put "wide" in there so the studios can't have a single advance screening for a paying test audience 6 months before release to get the clock started. So the only way to recoup costs between the movie leaving theaters and the day it can finally be available for free on a streaming service is through physical media sales and PVOD. I feel that if they did this and publicized that Wish would not be available for free on Disney+ until November 21st, 2024, people would be more likely to see it in theaters and buy it on DVD than they are now.
Is there a particular reason you didn't adjust the Roald Dahl figures, considering there were movies from 1996?
Aww Roald Dahl didn't get the adjusted for inflation treatment. I wonder if Charlie and the Choco Factory R would still be on top then.
Saw Wonka with the gf over the weekend. I think it’s gonna hold out well, based on how I saw the response. Hi Dan, was wondering about your 'International Film Grosses (Domestic)' chart where the UK falls in terms of being international? I know there is a lot of interplay between Hollywood and the UK film industry but some films and some franchises are pretty firmly in the it's a UK production side of things, Harry Potter and Bond jump straight to mind. Obviously, they're not being counted or I imagine they'd be showing up in that chart, just wondering why.
@potterpotty01

UK Box office does come in the international gross. the top film in the Uk over the weekend was Wonka with 6.3M that would have been included in the international gross. when it comes to UK productions, they are usually US distrubutors parent companies like Warner Bros and MGM, but when No Time To Die was in the international chart Dan did have a union flag next to it.

I wonder if the chart was scoped to non-English films. Edit: In a comment below Dan's already caught some other mistakes on that chart. Apparently reliable information was hard to find.
Can week 2 Wonka beat week 1 Aquaman?
"Leggy"? 🤔 I'll allow it.
The day after Christmas is called Boxing Day. (At least in countries that mainly speak English and still mostly have a geriatric King.)
Just a heads up, I believe you mispronounced the name of the anime film based on the book The Borrowers last week, not sure if anyone else mentioned it in the last vid
I keep going to see Hunger Games in theaters purely because Tom Blyth is so cute. My rationale is that movie theaters could always use more business!
By international film (in regards to the top 5 chart w crouching tiger)... is that non-English?
One last DCEU memorial service with Aquaman 2. Crazy that it could open less than Blue Beetle!!!
"turn of the century" way to make me feel old Dan 😅, jk.
Good on reporting the truth about TLJ's box office. Also, IIRC its second weekend corresponded to the opening weekends of both Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle AND The Greatest Showman. Either of those movies alone is probably bigger competition than the other two sequel trilogy movies faced! Speaking of competition, tbh considering how many billion-dollar hits there were in the latter half of the previous decade in particular there's probably a good reason why simply being a sequel to one of them is no guarantee of success. Why have one sequel to a billion-dollar hit be a massive bomb when you can have TWO?
Am I missing something? Why is the boy and the heron divisive?
Watching The Boy and the Heron last weekend just reminded me that all viewpoints are subjective when it comes to movie reviews. I usually agree with Dan’s viewpoints and reviews, but TBATH really felt aimless and confusing. I absolutely worship Miyazaki, and catch all his releases on opening weekend going back to Princess Mononoke. I think Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Spirited Away and Mononoke are his absolute masterpieces. I also really like most of the other films he has made (including Whisper of the Heart, which he didn’t direct but technically willed into existence). The only film of his that I really never wanted to watch a second time was Howl’s Moving Castle. It was very confusing, rambling, and made little sense. The Boy and the Heron felt very similar, and I felt that it should have been at least 45 minutes shorter and would have benefited from a more coherent plot. This is coming from someone who usually loves his lengthy fantastical films. To contrast this, my sister wanted to see The Marvels, so I went with her even though I expected an absolute dumpster fire based on Dan’s and other’s reviews. I was pleasantly surprised. It was just mediocre, but I have seen far worse Marvel films. It was an average superhero movie, and certainly not as confusingly terrible as many made it out to be.
Wonka did it right. No politics. Diverse cast that felt natural where skin colour was never mentioned. that way it should be. Shocking, you can have diversity without forcing agendas.
