Dan that pronunciation of Arrietty was certainty something but you get a gold star for the attempt 😅❤ "The Secret World of Arrietty" is an adaptation of "The Borrowers" (one of the most famous adaptations is the live action one from the 90s) to give it a bit more context ❤

Hey Dan, just want to let you know your box office videos are very appreciated. I recently stumbled across a video from a somewhat large channel where the youtuber compared Godzilla Minus One's box office performance to the English MonsterVerse Godzilla films' box office performance and concluded that Minus One was a flop, ignoring the fact that Minus One's production budget was $15 million while each MonsterVerse Godzilla film cost $150+ million before P&A. KZread really has all kinds of crazy takes...

Grace Randolph has a total blind spot for non Hollywood movies. I really like her videos, and have even supported her channel financially before, but when something is out of her normal comfort zone, it’s kind of a train wreck. She likes what she likes, and often has pretty insightful commentary on certain things, but just as often she goes completely off the rails.

Really happy to see a rare but welcome week where the focus of the Box Office shines upon Japanese Cinema. Studio Ghibli has brought light into so many people's lives over the years and it is nice to see Box Office returns and Awards shows giving the content that comes from that part of the world more of a spotlight in the West.

They are committed to showing films in their original language and in addition to showing curated new release movies like Maestro, Napoleon and Perfect Days (the latter coming next week), they show older films too, most notably The Third Man at least three times a week.

My last few movie going experiences have been pretty baffling. First we tried to catch Godzilla in Dolby only for the theater to play the wrong movie (Wish). The manager apologized and moved everyone to another theater… Where the movie was so loud it was actually physically uncomfortable. Next time we went to see Boy and the Heron only for them to play the sub titled version instead. Which was fine but we went there because it was supposed to be the sub. Not super happy about it!

Arrietty's original Japanese title can be literally translated as Arrietty the Borrower, and I'll never understand the reasoning behind the title change--it's an adaptation of the Borrowers books, which while British is pretty well known in the states (there was a movie back in the 1990s, and the series was popular enough to inspire the American "The Littles" series of books as well as the 1980s cartoon). To be fair, having significantly different names for English releases is fairly common and typically is part of early branding decisions and not always done by the translators. Boy and the Heron's original title was "How Do You Live," a name taken from a real-world book that appears in the film but is not well known outside Japan. Fun facts about other Studio Ghibli names: Castle in the Sky's original title included the name Laputa from Gulliver's Travels (and was a little too similar to a colorful Spanish word to go by unchecked, though the name appears within the movie itself verbally and visually); Kiki's Delivery Service was called Witch's Delivery Service (or Express Home Delivery if you believe Wiki); Porco Rosso was (romanized) Kurnei no Buta, both of which mean Crimson Pig, and is based on a short manga mini-series that Miyazaki did called (translated) "The Age of the Flying Boat;" Isao Takahata's Only Yesterday was originally Omohide Poro Poro (Memories Come Tumbling Down ("poro poro" is a manga sound effect or onomatopoeia for people falling down (probably down stairs), if I remember correctly); Pom Poko had a longer titled that translated to Heisei-era Tanuki War Pom Poko (pom poko or ponpoko is another Japanese sound effect, this time of the mythological version of tanuki drumming their bellies); Spirited Away also had a longer title (Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi, "The Spiriting Away of Sen and Chihiro"); Whisper of the Heart's original title is more literally translated as "If You Listen Carefully;" Ocean Waves was "I Can Hear the Ocean;" Ponyo was "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea;" My Neighbors the Yamadas has an extra bit of onomatopoeia at the beginning (houhokekyo, which is supposed to be the sound of a particular bird); The Cat Returns was "The Cat's Repayment;" Tales from Earthsea didn't have the Earthsea branding in its original Japanese title (Ged's War Chronicles); From Up on Poppy Hill was From Coquelicot Hill (Coquelicot being a French word for a variety of poppy but used in English for a particular shade of red associate with poppies); When Marnie was There reverts to the original title of the British novel from the slightly different Japanese title ("Marnie of My Memories"). A couple of pre-Ghibli series that either Miyazaki or Takahata worked on also had interesting name changes: the Anne of Green Gables anime from 1979 and directed by Isao Takahata was titled Akage no An (Red-headed Anne), while the Miyazaki developed Sherlock Hound (which is exactly what it sounds like, a series in which the characters of the Sherlock Holmes stories are all dogs--it's actually a fairly good series, though Miyazaki was only directly involved in six episodes) was originally titled Meitentai Holmes (Great Detective Holmes, very similar to the original title of the unrelated shonen manga and anime series Case Closed, aka Meitentai Conan).

19:22 Honestly, I agree; I hope people’s takeaway from The Marvels wasn’t, “oh we shouldn’t put other people into the seat of the director”, rather it should be “This was her biggest accomplishment and that’s impressive. Of course, it didn’t perform to expectations, but plenty of other directors haven’t been performing well for the Marvel company as a whole, so we shouldn’t just chalk it up to her only, since I think this is a Marvel-wide issue”.

What you are saying concerning budgets is oh so accurate. I have mostly worked with advertisement. And am a hyphenate. So when it came to me directing a few short films, I engaged people who I had gotten to know either as a Director's Assistant, Film Editor and even Director, with whom I had a great relationship with. It's very much hustling, but both cast and crew did me a favor and cut their salary to basically nothing except for like coming to the sets and proper catering. They also knew that it would be a fun set (even though I have learned never to shoot stuff in water again). So if you are well-connected you can do miracles on a shoe-string budget. But ideally they all got a hefty paycheck on a previous project. Plus, since I also edit, I could keep post-production costs to a minimum. Think my most expensive short film cost like 2K. However, had anyone else pursued these kind of things like covering an entire bus with black cloth to simulate night or actually renting the camera- and lighting equipment instead of simply borrowing it all... I think that the budgets would balloon way beyond 25K per pic.

That’s the exact opposite of what I felt with that movie. To me, it felt TOO supervised. Like the creative people in charge of it weren’t allowed to actually be creative, since the movie was already being made by committee on the corporate level. THAT is the issue, not the fact that you hired a newer director who doesn’t have the weight or influence to throw around and get what exactly they want.

I was tossing up whether to be That Guy here, but since you seemed interested in Arrietty's different names internationally, I'll bite the bullet - it's "Ari-ETty" rather than "aRAI-uh--TY. Underrated movie IMO - there's an early heist-like sequence that's one of my favourites sequences in film.

Thanks for pointing out how underpaid the Japanese artists are. South Korea has a similar problem, and I’m not even sure if we have a residual system for actors here. Animators are all underpaid across the globe, so I don’t think celebrating a really low budget is a good thing for the artists that were involved.

12:41 Yeah I was looking at the budgets for both Wonka and Aquaman 2 and Wonka is on track to make back its budget because it has a $125 million dollar budget which is $80 million less than Aquaman 2 which is at $205 million.

It's easy to make a cheap Godzilla, if you focus on the humans and show Godzilla barely. It makes him scarier and helps the Budget.

I wonder if US theaters are just particularly bad at masking. My local big theater chain in Germany does it and I've always taken it for granted. I don't even think I've seen an unmasked theater presentation in the country in at least years. Here it's not just something for the small, uber-passionate venues, it's just normal.

my buddy and I went and saw Godzilla minus one. We loved it. A week later we were talking about going to the theater again. We didn't. Because there is nothing good to see. Pleasantly surprised to see how foreign film is doing good in the US. Love to see more anime films coming. I really urge people to see Chinese movie Wondering Earth 2. The plot is nothing special, but the cinematic. Damn. It's CG yes. But it's the most expensive CG I've ever seen. It beat any of those Marvel movies in my book.

The Eras Tour movie doing $620k in its 8th & final wkend means they could probably have gotten another wkend or two in Theaters to officially get it above $180m domestic/$250m worldwide. Surprised that Oppenheimer in its 21st wkend was in 1,316 Theaters after getting a 1,215 expansion taking in $363k it arguably doesn't need whereas Godzilla Minus One should've gotten more than its 232 theater expansion and been in well over 3,000 Theaters! Beyonce's Renaissance with a 74.9% drop was heavily front-loaded, were the tickets significantly more expensive?! IMAX tkt sales crossing $1bn for the year (3rd highest ever) with just 2 $1bn+ movies all year is impressive. In comparison, 2019 with $1.11bn in IMAX sales had 9 $1bn+ movies that year.
