Qwerty Bastard the movie comes out soon, so the timing seems fitting. Besides, there are plenty of essays you can do on Wonder Woman apart from just her lack of representation (which sadly, is something that a lot of heroines had for a long time, some of them even today)

Rodrigo Salles Dude this is not even a joke. I'm trying to make a similar video essay about the latest Glass Animals album and I want it to be well presented but damn I have a such a new found respect for the actual art of editing. The stuff this guy does must take so fucking long, it took me like 2 hours to do my intro and it's still really shitty.

Oh, how I hate that "argument" about WW not being a recognizable character. Pretty much all my family and friends, who are not familiar with superhero comic books, can easily recognize WW as much as Batman and Superman because of how symbolic they are to the pop culture. If that's not a recignizable character, then I don't know what it is. Anyway, beautiful video, as usual. Loved it.

I think Wonder woman is definitely one of the most important superheroes of all time. I mean growing up and reading the comics and watching the TV shows, it was quite obvious how important Diana's presence in the DC universe is/was (hoping this new movie could showcase that.) Why can't mainstream media see her as someone worth investing in?

My favorite superhero of all time! I love the complexity and simplicity of her character. Her compassion, her resilience, her resolve to always do the right thing no matter what. I love it when she's written to still be compassionate and feminine even though she's a warrior. George Perez, Gail Simone, and Greg Rucka are my favorite Wonder Woman writers.

There's a difference between a superhero story standing for a social message because it had one of the first and most recognizable female characters in an industry where it was uncommon (Wonder Woman, which btw isn't quite as effective or unique of a thing in this day and age) and a superhero story who's idea of standing for a social message is to have an Asgardian being with no interest in human politics go on a rant about Israel that is completely out of character (An Asgardian God in a recent Thor comic iirc) or someone telling Spiderman not to assume an Alien baby's gender (yes, that was a thing) or portraying a mean comment on a blog post as an unbelievable, shocking act (can't remember what comic it was, but it was so out of touch with portraying the internet that it made me question if it was published by a 60-year old). I could go on. The reason people are so against social messages in comics nowadays is because 95% of it is done so insultingly pretentious. Back when comics with well-executed social messages like Maus where being made, comic fans where actually very supportive and celebratory of them.

This was beautiful, really made me think about my own personal disinterest in Wonder Woman. Growing up I never saw the symbolism, just a superhero with a lasso of truth. (Not cool in my adolescent or even adult mind) Which I suppose could be attributed to the lack of exposure of the Super Hero. I never read comics, and most of my love for Batman stemmed from the films and Animated series. Perhaps if WW was given the same care and exposure she too could be fully understood and admired. But after this, I am very excited to see the WW film in theaters June 2nd. Hopefully the hero will finally get the exposure deserved of such a symbol.

The "not as marketable" argument kind of goes out the window when you consider that Marvel launched it's massive film empire on the back of Iron Man, who, let's be real, prior to Robert Downey Jr., was definitely way less known than Wonder Woman. It's almost like there might be a different reason...

Because comics, were originally targeted at the male demographic, as a result, more males read comics - obviously it's more relatable to said males, when the protagonist has similar qualities to you, be that race, gender (male in this case), age. Now in the modern era, comics are now able to appeal to a wide range of audiences, of different gender, race etc. That's something anyone can admire. But it's important to apply logic when thinking about why some characters are more popular than others.

  • @SameNameDifferentGame

You should maybe brush up on your comics history. There were all kinds of comics in the early days, aimed at all kinds of readers, including romance and comedy books with female readership. But that still doesn't address Wonder Woman in particular who, again, prior to Marvel taking a chance on Iron Man, was considerably more popular than characters like Thor and Iron Man and definitely any of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

+ I'd argue that with the ghost busters the difference between them and someone like wonderwoman is that ghost busters did it for attention. Much like how the new power puff girls advertised having a pro trans episode (even though it wasn't intended to be related to that topic at all and relating it to that topic actually makes it come off as very anti trans) they did it to be trend and for attention. It was a pure marketing ploy with very little actual substance and it had nothing to actually say about the movement it was banking on tapping and exploiting. It was basically a shallow and half heartedly sleazy attempt to use a movement for its own gain without adding anything to it while acting like it's adding to it in the process, like a parasite. And just like parasites all it does is hurt and make what its leaching off of look worse in the processs, which it did. Wonderwoman on the other hand could actually be used to comment on the current political and social climate. Although that's all up to DC with how they treat her.

  • @WinterGirlRules

I agree wholeheartedly, Isaac. Ghostbusters was not only not a feaux feminist film, despite the fact that naive feminists flocked toward it. But it was actually damaging to feminism, as well as perpetuating a lot of anti-feminist ideals. Treating men as intellectually inferior, and treating Black women as a stereotype. It was a man's caricature of feminism, and not even remotely a staple of modern feminism. Plus, and this is one of the most important parts. The studio heads, the actresses, even the director accused the moviegoing audience told the audience what they were if they didn't see the Ghostbusters remake. Even though the accusation was completely false. Despite the fact that the film was an insult to actual feminism, as well as racist, they accused those who didn't see it as sexist for not doing so. Wonder Woman is being advertised as a World War I period piece crossed with a Greek epic. The focus is on her as a warrior. As someone who fights against evil. Obviously they are using female pronouns and referring to her by a female name. But it's not the central focus of her story. They aren't having the characters going "SHE'S A WOMAN AND SHE'S DOING THIS" or "SHE'S A WOMAN AND SHE'S DOING THAT" in every scene like they did with the Ghostbusters remake. They are following her as a heroine who wants to do the right thing for her people and for the world they are sworn to protect. They are letting her heroic deeds speak for her. Not her gender. That's what true feminism is.

Hardcore, modern feminists will find something to hate about Wonder Woman and her representation regardless of how fair and realistic it may be. And, if they don't then that means Wonder Woman has been bastardized by hardcore, modern feminist values of gender inequality. I'd rather more Wonder Woman media to be made for Wonder Woman fans, and that's all.

Most third wave feminists typically don't like videogames, and will praise a movie or comic for its political relevance without ever reading it or buying it. Its the principle that matters to them not the actual stories or characters. Thats why marvel's been experiencing such a slump in sales even with their "progressive" comic books

It was always a terrible argument, but I think it gets even worse as some publishing execs were disappointed in the sales for the Tomb Raider reboot, claiming that it was Lara Croft that wasn't marketable (in comparison to Nathan Drake etc.) when they allocated a far smaller marketing budget to the game than any they compared it to. There's a really awful circular logic to these sorts of arguments that goes along the line of 'women aren't marketable so we won't market them' and the attitude becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Another pet peeve of mine is the argument that powerful women wouldn't be realistic - you see that one pop up every time someone mentions a fantasy game/movie/TV show - as though it's more of a narrative stretch to portray women that are just as capable as men than it is to populate the world with literal dragons and magic.

Well, most of the women are less strong than men but there are many exeptions, and superheros are exeptions. It would be very realistic to its universe, considering that most of the heros are males, and some females. But I think I get your point, powerful shit with more muscles and the known historical concept of men as warriors and heros makes males more marketable.

I see this response all the time, and to me it feels misused. An extra thrown in to meet some sort of representation quota (like token black guy, token girl, etc) may lack depth, but making your main characters (like Dragon Skunk said!) female/minority has no impact on that. When you say things like that about main characters, all people hear is "female characters are inherently shallow, because they are women."

Wonder Woman gets the shaft because outside of being an icon, she is boring as hell. She doesn't have an interesting personality, she has two notable villains who still take a back seat, she doesn't have that many stand out stories, and when she is with other characters she is treated as either a super butch independent third wave feminist, or a love interest to Batman or Superman. Superman and Batman both have character flaws (Superman more than Batman) and engaging personalities that don't make them seem pretentious and douchey each time they get into a conflict with one of their peers. Clark will fight over dishonest journalism, Bruce will fight over someone going to far, Wonder Woman will fight any time someone says something that can be tied to sexism. Being a feminist is all she is, and it's not enough to garner mass appeal outside of the fact that she is the first.

First of all you don't read comics. Second, If any of that is true at all it's because she gets shafted. That's the paradox where most writers don't seem to know what to do with her because other writers were too lazy to know what to do with her. But if you think its because there is nothing interesting about her than you've just fallen into the trap. Good writers have written her well more than enough times that people should get it by now. She's a warrior princess who's lost in time and will never quite understand the modern world but fights for it's people anyway. She was Thor before Thor was Thor but nobody complains about Thor. Since I know you don't read comics(Clark is more "flawed" than Bruce?) much less Wonder Woman comics ill recommend the current run by Greg Rucka. Super easy to find. Or Grant Morrison's Earth One. Both will tell you everything you need to know. Also you might know about Circe of Dr. Psycho Did you know Giganta was her villain? Now you do.
