Neat story. I have one too. 1974, I was 10 and we moved to a rural area of Michigan. I joined a fast pitch hardball team because my new friends were on the team, but I never swung a bat before, not even at a T-ball. So I was terrible, (Les may have been better here). I only got one hit all summer, because a pitcher felt sorry for me and lobbed one in for me. I hit it right inside and up the 1st base line. The pitcher went for it, the 1st base kid went for it, and the short stop went to 1st base. So there I am, running my heart out, but 2 guys are on the base line between me and the base,--so I went around them and made it to the base before the ball did. "OUT", I hear yelled. I was not suppose to run off the base line. I did not know I was suppose to plow them over. I did not play the next year, and ended up racing Motocross instead, (I never liked team sports anyway). Then almost 50 years later, I found a Charlie Brown movie from 1975. Charles Schultz made a .5hr film about Motocross, (Your a good sport Charlie Brown). And even though Charlie never won a baseball game, he won his first and only MX race. Hey, by the way. Good catch Helen. :) Doug in Michigan

It's too bad that they never used the Bucky character in more episodes- even as just a secondary character. If you check out the New WKRP episodes, they the character, Buddy Dornster, who was Bucky's brother, as the lazy, somewhat less than competent station engineer with a bad attitude. He was hilarious. The plots never centered around him, but he was a good addition and was basically playing the same character as Bucky.

Growing up I was never good or interested in sports. Except Track & Field. Which even though I was more into art and performance I won some track awards second place in the 440 run and third place in the high jump. I had a group of friends I played soft ball with. Due to not being good technical wise but being fast the guys on my team always had Me bunt the ball. I would do that then floor it to the base and 90% of the time I'd be safe. What I lacked in skill I made up for with speed. Maybe Andy should've had Les do the same. I bet Les was pretty fast.

Like you, I preferred a sport that was based on the individual. I was in the stands one day (back to 10 years old playing baseball), and to grand Fathers were talking about a kid who stole 2nd base, after the 1st base coach told him not to. The Grand fathers said, "Oh, you never go against the coach, no no no.", but the kid made it. I never liked team sports from that day on, and I say, "Team sports. Jan Smithers had a fabulous face, beautiful eyes and a smoking hot body. She was, by all accounts, an incredibly sweet and caring soul as well
“Wow he shock on it”!😱 I miss this kind of comedy when there wasn’t so much sensitivity. From Les’s comment to Venus, Jennifer’s short shorts and Bucky’s public drunkenness! Classic TV❤😂

Trust me, there was still propaganda in the show. In fact, almost all TV shows. It just gets worse every generation, but that is what TV, (and radio) was/is used for, especially since WW2.

I certainly did. You see, I was that kid who sucked at sports in PE class, who prayed, like Les, never to have the ball hit my way and played deep right field to stay away from the action as far as I could get. Then one day, like Les, I caught a deep fly to right quite by accident, trapping it between my elbows and stomach. Ended the inning. It was the first moment I got to be the hero on the ballfield.

@@LordZontar I felt like that in PE class as well. My hero moment wasn't on the baseball field. It was sinking a last second, Hail Mary, 3 point shot on the basketball court. I still remember the roar of all my teammates.
My memory of this scene is always Jennifer and Bailey running towards Les.
One of my favorite episodes.
I was so happy for Les when he made the catch. I was like Les in school. Always last one to be picked. I was awful in gym and yes, I actually prayed that a ball would not be coming my way.

That was quite the come from behind win for WKRP when you consider that 3 of their players (Mr. Carlson, Jennifer, and Les) couldn't hit or field at all, Johnny was decked out in a lawn chair in the outfield and Bucky was hammered, leaving Travis, Venus, Herb, and Bailey to carry the team. But I guess Mr. Carlson got a hit when it counted and Les caught the ball when it counted as well. Great episode. I always felt so bad for Les up until the end whenever I watch this.

Guns of Andy came out for us girls and Bailey and Jennifer clothes for the guys. Highlight of course Les’s proudest moment. What’s not to like about this episode?
It's too bad that they never used the Bucky character in more episodes- even as just a secondary character. If you check out the New WKRP episodes, they the character, Buddy Dornster, who was Bucky's brother, as the lazy, somewhat less than competent station engineer with a bad attitude. He was hilarious. The plots never centered around him, but he was a good addition and was basically playing the same character as Bucky.

I remember when Johnny was doing a live broadcast somewhere and a frustrated would-be DJ took the show hostage. “Simple….You’re a negro”. Even in the 70s they knew this to be true. As a Black man I laughed out loud at that. This show was so ahead of its time - it was “The Office” before there was “The Office”. I grew up watching this show, and it was intelligent, funny, and socially aware. They don’t make shows like this nowadays.

I played fast pitch hardball starting and ending at the age of ten. I was not good at it at all, (never sung a bat before). I got into wrestling, and later raced dirt bikes. A dictator coach and a bunch of workers jumping up and down." True dat.
