Wireless Mechanical Keyboard from 1984! Cherry KXN3-8451

Ғылым және технология

Now this is a cool keyboard. Not only does it utilize early Cherry MX Black key mechanisms, but it's also an infrared wireless keyboard replacement for the PCjr! As well as the "PC Senior," ha.

Eduardo Avila that's going to take a while. About two years ago LGR got amnesia and forgot about most anything after 2002. He's gonna freak when he learns about y2k and EA is now a hated game dev. Oh and that resident evil 2 is only barely coming out.

Raab M well... sorta. Depends on what it is. The main idea obviously though is to prevent tangled abominations with wires. There’s stuff for VR headsets though, which can make room scale VR easier so you don’t trip on wires and such.

Raab M Actually, wireless connections have improved, we’re starting to get 5G networks and we have 5.0 Ghz wifi speeds instead of shitty 2.5 Speeds. Cell towers have bigger range as well, meaning you’ll get a good data connection depending on where you are.

This keyboard seems to work just like a huge TV remote - it only works when there's a direct line-of-sight to the receiver. I had an IR wireless ball mouse which behaved exactly the same. One good thing about IR based wireless controllers is that the batteries in them seem to last forever. Oh, and nice to see Planet X3 on that old beast of a PC...

  • @thesteelrodent1796

    @thesteelrodent1796

    2 жыл бұрын

that's just the limitation of IR, especially older IR. Because the LEDs and sensors are embedded into something, you'll always have a relatively narrow cone of vision on both ends. It actually looks to be unusually wide on this keyboard, since usually you cannot get a decent connection if the transmitter and receiver is that close

It's normal for "vintage" MX black switches to be stiffer than modern ones. They were even made out of different materials! I have a Cherry keyboard from just before this one, before they started doing MX switches. It looks almost identical, although they still used the XT layout.

considering it was only a few years previously people were still using mechanical typewriters...also electric type writers were still heavier key press and thus, over time we have become used to a much lighter design, they had to slowly reduce it over time to please the people of the time

Martin Kronström You use your pc without speaker? Also if you uninstall your soundcards driver or only disable it windows uses the pc speaker to beep. I've used a long time windows xp like that, it would beep in many different ways and i would understand it. But windows many times gives feedback in audio (like errors, etc..).

Jordan William Yeah, but it actually does! Its kinda annoying. You see, if theres a windows update it makes a noise, when the printer prints something it makes another noise, when a program ends rendering or saving someting, another sound. Ot isnt quiet actually. But pc-speaker wise, yeah, pretty much it beeps to ask for help when it cant boot or when there is something wrong. But as i said that can be changed disabling the audio driver, then windows will beep for anything.

AND better than Win 95 or 98 Toshiba IR file transfer ones. And certainly ahead of its time in 1984...of course the golden age of 8-bit machines. Along with taking me back to my earliest computer using days, those sounds also remind me of the "Floppotron" videos here on YT... Arduinos, custom coding, a massive array of floppy drives, hard disks, & a flatbed image scanner or 2, all in order to recreate pop culture music through computer noises.

Nice sounding keyboard - does that little receiver box allow you to use original wired/wireless PC Junior keyboards with the 'Senior' as well?

For the IR box, use a small mirror at 45° next to the emitting LED to send the light to the left (or right) along the 'canyon' between the keyboard and base unit. Then set receiver to point along the canyon pick this up. Or use several mirrors and have the IR box hidden behind the PC :)

At 6:47, the sharp loud seek sound of the drive was an indication that PCJRMEM.COM was loaded, then it would reload DOS so it could access the memory expansion sidecar of the machine. If you remove the sidecar or even the power adapter from it, it'll boot differently since it won't "see" the sidecar anymore. Ah yes, back in the days where the sounds your computer hardware made actually meant something. Now drives are solid state and boring. Had a PCjr as a kid, and every now and again my dad would open the unit up and clean and oil the rails in the floppy drive. After a nice "lube job" as such, the drive was much quieter. If you didn't lube the rails every now and again you could get seek errors, so it was rather important to do it regularly.

Even the mechanical components of a modern PC are way too quiet to tell you anything. Well, except for GPU cooling fans. Turn those up to 100% and you'll sure hear the difference. XD But most graphics cards by default aren't configured to run the fans at anything close to that speed. Still, GPU fan speed is one of the few things that's still distinct (And loud) enough to tell you something about the state of your system...

Never lubed the rails on my drive, never got seek errors... My guess is it's something that once you open it up and start doing it you end up needing to do regularly after that. Ours was my family's main PC from about 1986 until around 1992, I inherited it then and used it until probably 1995.

Unless the drive was in really poor shape, generally there wouldn't be any seek errors. Lubing the rails made it seek much smoother and quieter, it was just a standard maintenance thing to do, along with checking the rotation speed of the drive. 5.25" drives had a "strobe wheel" like some record players do, and you could fine-tune the drive speed if it went out of adjustment. Usually that would occur with belt-driven drives after a lot of hours spinning; the belts would wear and speed could be off. Back in the days of the PCjr, it was all floppy-based, so that drive got a lot of usage, and therefore it was important to keep it maintained for optimal performance, because if that drive died, you had no computer.
