Weird Old Computer Mice: Yahoo, Ballskin, & Pistols

Unboxing and testing even more weird old mouse devices on a Windows 98 and XP PC! Checking out an 8D Smart Mouse from Yahoo, a smelly and off-putting baseball mouse with a rubbery skin, and an optical mouse for FPS games that looks like a lightgun but isn't.

Many years ago at E3, I got that gun mouse to take home and review. Suffice to say my bag got searched at the airport and the look of disappointment on the security officer's face when they realized it wasn't a real gun was palpable.

I don’t “need” subtitles but I’m just sooo used to always watching movies, tv and youtube with them. I just like that I can quickly look at them if I misunderstand something that was said. Especially nice with accents. So yes, always appreciated when a creator takes the time to make official ones instead of relying on the auto-generated ones!

OMG! That gun mouse was a terrible product that I just had to have! I remember buying mine at a Fry's Electronics in Sacramento CA. And wouldn't you know, Far Cry was the first thing I played with it. Wow, what a trip down memory lane. We basically had the exact same experience and feelings about it too. OMG I'm just taken back.
That quick cut after the batter gets beaned was perfect. 😂
Years ago I commented on an LGR video that I never expected to hear Clint say "that's one clean ball bay." Today I get to add the phrases "different ball skins" and "don't see too many brown balls, usually they're gray or black, white even" to the collection. Thanks for the mental images. Oh and the laughs 😂 Oh and I think Ashen's big brown couch and Clint's classic "if woodgrain was a fabric" recliner should battle to the death. Or star in a buddy cop flick together.

Man, that Yahoo mouse had so much potential. If you could have bound the "8D" joystick thingamabob to WASD or the arrow keys you could have a pretty usable one handed FPS setup. Not to mention anything else you could use it for, video editing, writing, drawing, etc... There's plenty of use cases for weird, programmable interfaces.
@trulyinfamous

Using your index finder to move the joystick for an extended period of time seems like a recipe for hand pain and discomfort, but that does seem like an interesting use case. DOOM may work well for it, though a normal joystick could also work.

I seem to remember early ergonomic mice being similar to the pistol one before they settled on the modern ones that give you an angled hand positions instead of fully vertical, the sensor put way forward on the device rather than cantered is also interesting in that it allows moving left/right by twisting it. As goofy as it is, there seems to be real merit to the idea, I think if it was designed like a joystick handle instead it would be functionally the same but considerably more comfortable.
@Shiruvan

I wanna try that mouse pistol myself. Certainly better than the "demon gun" you covere d before. I can also see it as a way to avoid the pain of sliding your underside wrist over the table. Thankyou so much for uploading the software for the yahoo mouse! Ive had the mouse since 2001ish but i didnt have the software anymore. My ibm model 95 will be forever in your gratitude 👌
As a gun enthusiast, I was actually impressed with your trigger discipline and that you used proper terminology when talking about the gun mouse!
I was hoping you'd try that pistol mouse on an FPS, and it's cool that it worked well!
Thank you for the subtitles ❤
Do you know what else I neat? Clints surprising amount of knowledge when it comes to firearm Terminology! Im impressed. Normal people couldn’t tell you where the trigger is let alone the slide release and ejection port. Props to you, man.
I suspect I may have had a variant of that Champ mouse as a football (⚽ not 🏈) for my Amiga, though they did align two of the pentagons with the centre of the buttons. I do remember the smell being really strong too.
coincidently, i was starting to design a mouse with a joystick mousewheel, so someone can hold for scrolling instead of spinning a wheel, while it might be cool to have sideways scrolling, i might opt for single axis based on your review of the yahoo mouse
I always have appreciated the consistent content this man provides. 👌
I love that you actually let yourself enjoy something! So many times with this type of "check it out" content there is always this negativity. Even in the video like you said, you were hating, but came around to it and I just don't feel like that happens often enough. Great video, subscribed for sure!
I like that janky UK localisation on the Y! mouse saying "Programme" - even the ZX Spectrum said "Program". Data Zoom honestly looks like an awesome feature - I think I need to find something to do it on modern systems! The "flesh mound" mouse is disconcertingly skin-coloured - frightening to think it exhibited a will of its own, and didn't want to go left. Once I saw the gun mouse out of the box, I guessed it *might* be good for FPS - would love to try it. Cheers!

I caught this video late, but I have the FPS Pistol Mouse! It's in it's box, safely tucked away in my closet with some other peripherals. I 100% agree with your take: it was weird at first, but there's something strangely tactile and immersive using that mouse to play a shooter. Great video!
I'm suprised at Clint's knowledge of various handgun parts, thats fun and neat to have in the review.
Digging the Windows editions displayed on the shelf....so Rad !! (Had to use a 90's term there).
oh man I own the MonsterGecko FPS mouse and freaking loved it! only down side is the wire that's on it, way to thin. after about 2 years of constant use the wire started to develop breaks in it, which I still need to get replaced at some point so I can use it again. anyways what's interesting to note about that mouse is that you don't need to slide it sideways to aim left or right, you can do that by simply twisting the mouse left and right from the grip. this feature is so good that you don't even notice it if you aren't paying attention.
That "YahOOoooo" at 0:43 really got me :D
I'm glad that I connectioned to the Internet (online) so that I could watch this fine video!
The gun reminded me hard on the Zalman fpsgun I tried out at the CeBIT 2008. What a flashback :) .
Really enjoy these weird mouse videos.
I have the zalman fps gun mouse, more just the handle than a full gun and more functions with dpi selection and I love it. Like you say weird to start but oddly satisfying!
I had the gun mouse years ago (the dual wheel one too) and the thing I remember about it is that because of the placement of the optical sensor at the front of the mouse the way you aim left and right feels incredibly natural. Rather than moving your mouse to the left you twist your wrist slightly to the left the same way you would with a gun. The mouse itself has some serious flaws I agree but the idea behind it is actually kind of cool especially if you just like gizmos and stuff.
Wonderful pieces of tech, i loved A4tech products since they were one of the few cheap but reliable brands here in Argentina back in the day. Sadly they cannot get their products here anymore but yeah; i wish someday to find some wacky peripherals like those, specially the gun-mouse, looks pretty fun!. Thanks for the video!
