It's winter in Australia and we are inland in the Blue Mountains where temperatures have been reaching -2 degrees Celsius. I have to go to Bunnings and buy some 30mm insulation to cut up and block out the Maxx Air vents, and also buy a 600/1200w 240V heater.
The insulation works amazing, and combined with running the heater just before bed turns a cold cabin into a warm cosy cabin. On one night some of the external water lines did freeze and took a few hours to defrost, so at some point I might insulate those lines in the future.
It's rare for us to be in temperatures this cold, so the upgrades are only lived quite briefly.

Surely a diesel heater makes more sense? $200 for a Chinese one or $1500 for a German one. A bit of a pain to install but very economical to run.

Could do, but we wanted a quick easy cheap option and its powered by the sun, might look into an electric blanket too which draws much less around 100w AC, or 9A DC. that would last 24h

You need to pinch the pompom from the Misses's hat and put it on the mic in that wind. With that heater being so aggesive on your batteries you'll probably need to fire the van up to charge the batteries, that would be an inefficient way to burn fuel. I'm really interested to know how it goes, maybe electric blanket for the bed might be an idea also.

Wow, that sure is a clean Webber! Mine gets a flogging and is as grotty as! For the I will definitely be installing a diesel heater as a more permanent solution.

Those caves and the rocky outcrops look amazing. Bar heaters are seriously power hungry, better with a convection heater with a thermostat - Bunnings has those too for a similar price - much cheaper to run and lots of heat level options, some come with an added fan. For de-icing the windscreen use a window or bathroom squeegee, get one thats not too flexible - if its really cold pouring hot water on can refreeze as clear ice, which is a lot harder to shift. I find the best thing is to start the engine and put the blower on the screen on a medium heat setting and put it on recirculate - clears the screen in and out fairly quickly. Think my sprinter has something on it to stop the fuel tank freezing.

Brit here I remember when I did my 'gap year' in Australia in the year 2000 (amazing country) and driving an old mitibushi rust bucket through Queensland and the radio on with them talking about unprecedented cold temperatures with worried people phoning in talking about buying a heater for their homes because they didn't have one lol.

Only problem is when you burn gas 'in the van' to heat, you actually create moisture and CO2 in the air and condensation is not what you want when all the windows and vents are closed to stay warm. Although not as 'green' as an electric heater from solar, a diesel or petrol heater is going to be far faster to heat the van.

It seems so strange to be sitting here in south Texas, where it is hot as hell in late June, and watch someone trying to keep warm in another country. Obviously, come January this situation would be reversed somewhat. Your video did show some interesting scenic areas with mountainous terrain, but I am sure you would have enjoyed it more without the cold wind and ice, eh?

They at too much risk of freezing at most places in Australia, so I havent had any issues with that, even in the pipes, in colder countries it might be an issue though

Funny to see you walking on ice, while here in Germany roars a heatwave of nearly 40degC... :-D Can´t you just drive to warmer areas, up north? The chinese diesel heaters would really do good, better than sucking the battery dry with the electric infrared...4 holes in the bottom and blasting 4kW of heat with minimal use of 0.1-0.4 ltrs of diesel per hour... never seen so much Kangaroos in one spot, are these the big ones? Thx for the vid! :-)

Thanks for the great video. I'm a newbie that just bought a van for a DIY conversion. I'm trying to do my research. Just curious: why not use a propane heater instead of the electric heater? Thank you.

Propane heaters create a lot of moisture which leads to mold, rot and drips from the ceiling. I have a Buddy heater which I love. Have to mop up after use.

@@chatteyj anything that combusts (producing heat by combustion) produces water from the chemical reaction. Difference is that a diesel heater has an external intake usually and has an external exhaust, expelling the primary byproducts of the combustion reaction (CO2 and H2O). Mine is a Webasto. They have heater options to run off either a gas or diesel van's specific fuel tank!

@@chatteyj it basically has an isolated combustion heater and a fan that blows air over the heated fins, warming the air, and propelling it throughout the van.
