Wings and Spoilers; Lift and Drag | How It Works

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

From high flying wings to splitters and spoilers, Aero makes cars look cool, but they also help cars handle! Aerodynamics is the study of how all that works, and it’s actually a few simple concepts that are responsible for all the weird shapes we stick n cars. There’s a lot of different factors that affect drag, downforce and how well cars move, so let’s get into it. This episode is all about Aero, and HOW IT WORKS!
Bart teaches us how cars work by blowing stuff up and cutting things in half. It’s a science show for the car lover who’s easily bored. Join Bart as he explains the science behind everything automotive. This is cars down to the atom. This is Science Garage.

Because it is a 10 min video with a very simple introduction to car aero. The part you don't like is where you have to train and practice to learn actual depth of material. I had explanations like this by great professors in mechanical engineering, but only at the very beginning of the class before we had to get down and apply it to example problems with actual calculations, extensive time consuming lab tests, and projects with true applications. I love it all, but there are always times in true learning perseverance that it seems more comfortable to give up.

Here's an idea for you, one of the areas of a car with the lowest pressure is the edge between the front bumper and hood. So next time you see a hood scoop or a headlight deleted into an air intake, realize it is literally the dumbest spot to put an intake, the intake is actually sucking air out of the engine. You have to be going something like 200-300 mph before compression of the air molecules occurs and a "ram" air intake is possible.

@Amc547 Warlord You're talking about Ram Air. Ram air only works above roughly 2/3's of the speed of sound, so you'd need to go over 400mph for a scoop force air in. The rear of the car is higher pressure than most of the car, because air is sitting still there and not moving. There's a bubble of high pressure air behind the rear bumper/trunk/hatch.

1:06 I'm having trouble with this explanation. Physically it is correct in a way but mathematically you'll get the wrong numbers. Fd (or drag force) is calculated with the density 'rho' of a fluid and 0,5. So Fd = 0,5 * rho of the fluid * Vsquared * drag coefficient Cd * reference area A. This gives an answer in Newton that represents its (counteracting) drag force

People who speed in the rain also scare me. They don't realize that the side profile of most cars is generally the same as that of an airplane wing. I wish there was a video about the nitty gritty details of aero. like... should the side skirts be angled downwards to create a small tunnel or should they be flat horizontal flaps that just increase the area under the car. and at what point should the rear diffuser start angling upwards. Does having the diffusing part of the diffuser behind the car make a difference? how far behind? Why do so many LeMans cars have pretty much a completely separate part as the diffuser supported by rods instead of integrating it into the body work. Does the shape of the fins on a diffuser have any bearing on the amount of downforce? would angling exhaust gases into the low pressure area behind the car help reduce drag? What is the best way to vent the high pressure area in the wheel wells?
