Wine and stemware tend to be my weakness. I have several styles--both in glass and crystal. I would never have considered the stemless kind however a friend thought I might enjoy some and purchased a set of 4 for me. On the odd occasion I will use them--more so when she comes over! I remember having an in-depth conversation about stemless glasses with another friend who was adamant that they should never have even been made. She said she didn't wait to become an adult to drink wine out of a juice glass. Eventually, she and I agreed that perhaps a stemless glass would have it's place on a yacht. It would make you feel like you were drinking out of a wineglass while at the same time, lowering the centre of gravity to keep your wine from spilling. There. . . I've said my peace. Again, great video, Marc. Darryl

I just bought white wine glasses yesterday! I'm going to tap them to hear! I know they're crystal and 'sharp' so I'm hoping to hear that nice deep ring, too! Thanks for this clip!

Thanks Joe Joe! Yup it does. You don't need many of them, but one or two nuce quality all-purpose stems are a must-have for the true lover of drink. I like Riedel but they've gotten very expensive. Schott Zwiesel from Austria is my affordable go-to.

I love your style of practicality, matter of factness, and clearly knowledgeable bits on wine all perfectly blended. I recognize what I THINK is an older Riedel Vinum and possibly Gabriel Glas? Could be wrong :)

Yes, you called it on the Vinums. Those are my go-tos. The other ones are from a British company called Fritz and Floyd but I don't think they make them anymore. My latest budget-glass obsession is a line from Marshall's stores of all places, called No. 1 and No. 2

If I am outside at the beach or around water I like the Govino plastic glasses. They are thin and have the thumb indent to get a good grip. I never need to worry about breakage and bare feet. Otherwise, a thin rimmed steamed glass that tapers at the top.

I recently tested multiple glass designs from Zalto, Grassl and Reidel. There were significant differences in both aroma and tastes between the shapes and designs. Given the results and other comparison testing, I'm not an advocate of a one size fits all approach. Too much research has gone into glass design to maximize the experience of different varietals. Do I recommend people go out and buy wine glasses for each varietal? No, particularly for casual consumers of wine. However, if you've invested in your collection it only seems logical you'd maximize the potential of the wines in your cellar by investing in good wine glasses.

  • @wine-living

Zalto makes some beautiful glasses! But yes, for the casual consumer, probably not going to make a huge difference. My audience tends to be beginners and casual drinkers, and that's why I suggest to get yourself a nice, high-quality set of all-purpose glasses. For the geeks and industry professionals, absolutely you can go deeper.

Great video Marc! Just love the sound of a bell ringing wine glass. Is Riedel your preferred type? I kind of like the way Zalto looks. Super elegant! But don't dare to buy 'em...cause they also look thin and fragile 😅 Do you have any experience with these?

  • @wine-living

Underneath The Bottle thanks for watching. I don't have any experience with Zalto, I think it's a joint prohect with the Eurocave people in the UK, which means you can probably buy them through Wine Enthusiast. I have quite a few Riedels, but they're shrinking in number because I keep breaking them too. I have a wicked scar on my hand from breaking one while washing it. I know wine Enthusiast has a line of unbreakable crystal that's supposed to be pretty nice. You might consider those.

I'm a red guy all day long Marc. That said, I would say my Zalto bordeauxs are my favorite, then my Grassl 1855 glasses, then my Riedel Performance cabs, and FINALLY, my Schott Zwiesel tritans for company, just because they hit all the notes, and they're fairly rugged :)

@@saldefranco9362 I have about 250 small 7-oz Schotts that I (used to) use for my wine tasting groups. You can't beat them for everyday use and durability! As far as the high-end stuff, I think I've broken more than I own at this point. I haven't ben out of the house in a year so I need to stock up once we can actually have company in the house again! Enjoy and have a great weekend.
