    Dini this is such a good video. We definitely taste the difference in the shape and type of glass. We used to be wine "experts" and tasted it in plastic glasses. This made the wine taste so bad we kind of gave up on wibne for many years. Now that we have gotten a little more educated we mainly drink it from glass or crystal with a wide mouth to let it breathe. Great video

    I own all kinds of wine glasses--I'm in the wine-selling business, so knowing how wines taste and smell is important to me. I have Riedel, Luminarc, Gabriel-Glas, and Schott-Zweisel, and my favorites are my Schotts. They are well-balanced, perfectly designed for swirling, have steady, wide feet, and are nearly break-proof. I was thrilled to see you like them as much as I do. We have 3 cats, and 3 grandchildren, so our Riedel almost never comes out of the china cabinet these days. But the Schott is so durable--and finely-made--that we actually enjoy it more than the Reidel, because we don't have to worry about using it at family gatherings. I have set of 8 each or Red and White SZ glasses--and we use them several times a week.

Until then, we have 3 cats, and 3 grandchildren, and that combination is simply not conducive to any sort of affordable lifespan for either of those brands in "family gathering" scenarios. So I'll stick with my Triton-glass Schott's and Bormioli's, thank you very much...

    I won’t doubt that they make little difference in functionality, but in build quality there are big differences. I tried several glasses in a store and the Riedel’s base is super flat and don’t wobble at all, while Zwiesels do wobble a bit. Not to mention you can spot some horizontal streaks on the Zwiesel. Now that I noticed the build quality side I had no choice but to spend the extra money on Riedels.

    I came across your video on wine glasses the other day after a friend of mine had suggested trying Riedel stemware. I have recently gotten back into enjoying wine again after taking a mini year hiatus from it. I have broken my share of wine glasses over the years because I am also a visually disabled person. You had mentioned something in this video that truly intrigued me. A good friend of mine that is also blind quit using stemware and went to and inexpensive stemless wine glass. I’m not sure I like these things, my wife was just given one as a gift and I’m not a big fan of it. I am going to start looking up more about the titanium reinforced crystal wine glasses. Would love to hear any input from you on this. Thank you.

    Thanks Mike for writing - I hadn't thought of that aspect but it is important to consider. I bet your other senses are even more sensitive, so I can imagine how a cheaper glass would be less pleasing. Try these or perhaps a higher quality wine tumbler made of crystal like those made by Riedel would also work since often glasses break at the stem. Best of luck and cheers!

    In reference to your personal preferences. In my opinion the opening on top of a glass must not be too small or too tight. A small diametre on top exaggerates the qualities of the wine you’re driniking. Which means a very good (red) wine expresses itself far too much, as if it would be served at too high temperature. Remember, when in 1855 the best wines in Medoc (France) were classified, they tested in simple (however sometimes expensive) and 'open' glasses. Modern? Perhaps I prefere Riedel and Nachtmann over Schott.Zwiesel.

  • @DiniVino

    @DiniVino

    Thanks for your comment and sharing your preferences. I see how some people would prefer that. We've learned so much about sensory perception since 1855 and modern glasses take that into consideration. I don't find the wines express themselves too much. In the end, much comes down to personal preference.

    @@DiniVino In my comment I forgot to mention my compliments for your very nice video.Thanks a lot for your response. You’ re right, it comes down to personal preference, and I‘m not against modern glass design at all (the 'art' of making modern instead of great wines is another story). All that matters is your own choice (and doing some testing, perhaps including some antique glasses). For example the Riedel Vinum (Bordeaux) is very good in my opinion. It’s simple but delicate design serves Bordeaux-type wines extraordinary. Nachtmann Vivendi would be a cheaper but very good alternative. Best regards from The Netherlands!

I encourage people to hold the stem to keep the wine at a cooler temperature as you mention, but some people don't mind warming the wine. Often I and other professionals intentionally warm our wines with our hands if served too cold. I try to spend less time telling people what is wrong and more time helping them enjoy! The video started very well. Nice questions to yourself, but the end looks like a sponsorized video of Shott. There are no reasons (except your aesthetics taste) to choose a Shott glass. Your conclusion is that because of the titanium in the melting process of the material, you should choose that glass? Sincerely i was expecting more form your point of view. Durability was not part of the initial survey, and a narrow opening of one glass cannot define the standard. Sorry to say, but the result is very second-rate.
