My name is Konstantin Baum, I am a Master of Wine, and today I am doing another Ultimate Wine Glass test. You had many suggestions and ideas on what wine glasses I should review next but I think most important for everyone is the best universal glass. To find the Ultimate Universal Glass, I will do a blind tasting of this selection and the worst performing glass will be destroyed. If you look back on the history of wine glasses you see some trends and evolution. The production of wine glasses as we know them with a base, a stem, and a bowl started in the 1400s in Venice. But these glasses did not look like today's wine glasses. They used to be much smaller and this is due to different factors. First of all, it was just not possible to create the thin, light, and clear big bowls that we are used to today. Secondly, there was a tax on Glasses based on their weight, and glassmakers, therefore, reduced the weight of a glass as much as they could.

It's amazing to see how Zalto was praised for years as THE glass to have. They're great glasses overall that are beautiful and feel great in the hand, but having done similar tests as you I found the Riedel Performance to outperform the Zalto almost every time. I was tasting some Gruner with Bernhard Ott in Wagram back in 2018, and the whole tasting was with a Zalto Universal, as that's all they used in the tasting room. He had just gotten a few tester Riedel Performance glasses so we did a comparison versus the Zalto. It was the first time I was blown away by how much of a difference a glass could make. And your description for the Zalto being 'hollow' was exactly what we felt. Bernhard looked at me in shock and said he needed to change all of the glasses in the tasting room after that, hahaha! I had worked with Zaltos only since 2013, but this one tasting helped me to be more open minded towards everything else out there. And thanks for doing a universal test! Great content, as always.

I've been drinking out of Grassl Glass, a newer company, mostly these days. I use their "Cru" glass, which is their wide bowl Pinot Noir glass for most reds. It's similar in proportion to the Zalto Burgundy glass, but significantly smaller. It performs nicely with most varietals/styles, though it's obviously not a great white glass, outside of rich, oaky, concentrated whites. They also have a glass called Liberté which is similar to the Gabriel, but a little taller and a slightly smaller diameter rim. It performs very nicely with anything you put in it, including sparkling!

Hi Konstantin. Love the content! Do you have any experience with the thickness and texture of drinkware VS the perception of flavour and texture of a wine? I have tried various glasses and even ceramic and my opinion is that the thicker and rougher the material of the glass is, the lower the perception of viscosity.

I ended up buying the Gabriel Glas StandArt for my wife's Christmas gift this year. Debated for days on whether or not to upgrade to their hand-blown glasses (and many other hand-blown brands) but I know if she uses them they will eventually get broken, or else sit unused on the shelf for fear she would break them. At a comparable price I did consider the Riedel Veritas riesling and sauvignon glasses as both "universal" types, but they are pretty plain looking while the Gabriels are much prettier. Speaking of pretty, I absolutely love the look of the two burgundy style glasses from Sydonios, "le Subtil" and "Le Septentrional", very elegant!

Would be extra interesting to see a “double blind study”, where your wife also holds the glass and it’s not touching the face (above the lips/nose tip). And also being tasted this way. We’re definitely going to be more attentive to our choice of glass from now on, and it clearly motivates purchasing more beautiful glasses :) Thanks for a lot of fun and useful videos!

I actually got them labelled CM (Castel Miquel) as a present by the owner of the company I work for and wonder if it is actually a relabeled version of the Gabriel glas or comes out of the same mould. Weight and look is nearly identical. Anyways, I really think this is a strong performer as a universal glas due to the shape. Might try the Riedels in the future for comparison purposes.

A great thank you from homeland Germany! Everyday wine drinkers my wife and I are - and still in search of a reasonably priced glass for probably every possible use without too many downpoints. Have tried several brands for several wines and accumulated a selection of sometimes dysfunctional tableware. After another deep consideration Riedel Veritas Champagne won our hearts - sold for less than 18 € a piece in May 2023 fright included. Tested it with our "standard wines" to unlock, if there are differences to be discovered. There ARE. Young wines like our favorite Riesling were rather acidic on the first nose, even a Chateau Citron 2019 (our "noodle-wine" to go with tomato sauce) was scaringly sour when freshly poured. The Riesling (2022 "Liter-Riesling" from Palatinate for a staggering 3,60 €/Ltr) took five minutes to open up and develop a much deeper fruitiness on the palette which lasted for more than a quarter of an hour. Then the glass was empty. The Bordeaux took a while longer to free its aromas but then an intense and round flavor evolved. Champagn eneeds to be tried still - but it is without doubt a very good glass to lift a wine's aromas. A bit difficult to clean due to very thin glass and small opening - but some risks have to be taken!

Just discovered the channel. I'm impressed with the amount of information you put into the top-notch tastings especially. Keep it up! How long are the raw recordings for a video like this? In other words, what's the ratio between cut and uncut footage? As for the stemware, I'm one of those guys who thinks it's hugely overestimated as long as it's decent. I've also made some glass comparisons, albeit not as extensive. IMO it's plain impossible to objectively compare glass performance as there are too many parameters that can't be isolated. My current verdict is, there are some minuscule differences in smell, but only relevant if you rush over it. I'm open to correct myself if the situation arises. So for me it comes down to a 'good enough' universal glass, not least due to space issues. It just so happened I chose Gabriel (both Gold and StandArt) and I'm fine with them.

I use the "Riedel Veritas Old World Syrah" as my univervasl "daily driker". I got it as part of a testing set of 3 glases, where the "Riedel ambasador" in Denmark had selected some different wines to try in all 3 glasses in the set and compare them (the two other glases being "Cabernet/Merlot" and "New world Pinot Noir"). The "Old world Syrah" glass is very often what the Riedel glass guide recommends, and the Riedel Ambasador also spoke of it as a universal/allround glass.. The Veritas Champagne does look a bit like it, only slightly smaller..

Then I also bought a wider Riedel Veritas for Old World Pinot Noir (that i also use for Nebbiolo based wines). Luckly a lot of online shops these days in the wine page tell you which type of glass is best for a specific wine.

I did the Riedel "glass tasting" seminar conducted by Georg Riedel himself personally. Amazing!! But by now, he must have at least a dozen glasses, of all different shapes, sizes, rim diameters, volumes, fluted, non fluted, flat bottomed, curved bottomed, hand blown, machine made, with stems, without stems ... the list goes on; yet that somehow magically are all perfect for Cabernet Sauvignon!! And I did the same "glass tasting" with another presenter, this time with Spieglau glasses, after Riedel bought Spieglau. Suddenly it seems, after the purchase, the Spieglau glasses performed just as well as the Riedels, when before they were just mediocre. And strangely enough, Riedel's Coca Cola glass is the same shape as a Coke bottle. Seems to me there's a credibility issue here.

A question came up m mind when I saw the ISO glass: What is our opinion on the often rather small sweet wine glasses? I know that these glasses are smaller because if you pour lets say sherry to the widest part of the glass into a normal glass you will be drunk soon because of the higher alcohol level sherry has but apart from that sherry, madeira, port and so on usually smell really intense. So to make it simple: Which glass do you use to drink your sherry? Think I was also one of those who already said, that he like the Gabriel Glass best but I am not sure about this, so my favouriter glass is the Gabriel Glass.
