@@dimmer2211A warrant from the authorities is a legal obligation. You can contest it or you can comply. If you comply, and you are a no logs VPN, for example, there is nothing you can hand over to them. This happened with Mullvad recently, who complied with a warrant. If you are referring to the recent Catalan activist case, Proton handed over the recovery email from the individual named in the warrant, as they were legally obliged to do - everything else regarding the individuals email was encrypted and could not be handed over. In the end, btw it was Apple who handed over the individuals details, as they had an iCloud recovery email attached to their Proton account - which was p*ss-poor opsec. Unless you have some further evidence stating that Proton is ‘neither secure nor trustworthy’ it appears to be baseless opinion and also potentially libellous.

Windows is employing the same tactic described in "The Rum Diary": to build one hotel, you propose constructing an entire street of hotels. The ensuing public outcry leads to a compromise where you agree to build just one, which was your actual goal from the start. Similarly, Windows has adopted this strategy to introduce their recall in a subtle manner. They anticipated significant backlash, but by initiating the process sooner, they have managed to reach the agreement they originally wanted in the first place.

There are problems though for new users, particularly with understanding how it works (people have been trained for years on Windows OS) and with modding games (A great many pc gamers mod but their is very little online coverage for modders generally, from understanding the basics to tools for advanced modding). The first point of contact also requires more help for new users; i.e: File management. The experience is not the same as Windows so people coming to Linux for the first time are left confused as to what is happening and how to find what they thought they had downloaded/saved. Turns out that my file manager (Dolphin) will just refuse to manage files in certain directories. I eventually found a workaround, but it's clunky and inconvenient to use. Not even Windows just straight up refuses to let you manage files afaik, which made the whole thing even more distasteful. Makes me wonder what else is locked down that I don't know about yet. @@mystechry "AFAIR" I see what you did there.
While it's absolutely correct to say Granite is basically libadwaita but for elementaryOS, it's a bit unfair as Granite exists since forever and was an inspiration for libadwaita (just the concept of having a platform library on top of GTK). If anything, libadwaita is Granite but for GNOME, and I say this as a former elementary app dev who used Granite black in 2011, a former Granite contributor, and as one of the co-authors of libadwaita.
It's not just screenshots. It's indexed screenshots, which is why any tool can very quickly search thru the database.
God, imagine if Recall was released and Log4j was discovered much later than it actually was. Hell, it doesn't take much paranoia to believe there's another 0 day exploit out there of that scale. Someone just has to develop a method to get into the Recall system, then just sit on it and wait for an exploit to get announced (or set about finding one themselves).

Glad I switched to Arch Linux a few months ago.

Mint would be better off putting a warning banner on app packages that aren't official, but show them by default.

Well I don't blame you for that mindset if you're the one developing an app store of some sort, actually it's better that the end-user doesn't even see unverified or what they might classify as insecure packages, because then it forces the end user to manually enable that thus putting the sole responsibility and blame on that end user not on the App Store developer

Anti cheat support in Linux should be an open source kernel module that will allow oversight in the service, the only binary blob should be the encryption key that is paired with the module and games can be matched up with the key to confirm that it isn’t a modified service. This service should only run when the game is running and that would allow multiple versions of the service without using too many resources.
I'd really like to see KDE implement a section at startup where you can pick your layout. It is very customizable but a lot of people struggle to use that power because it isn't super straightforward to get everything exactly how you want it. It would be nice to offer a few default layouts like Zorin OS does.

Think KDE should locally use synching to share nearby devices for back up, or storage via UWB it would also be interesting to make virus scanning more easey to access should you wish to use.microdaft software.

I've actually been happy with paying for Proton. I didn't initially realize how much i would get for paying for it, which might be something the team can improve on their advertising.
While I think Linux Mint has made some great decisions over the years, like with the XApps and patching out Snaps, unfortunately, I think the team made an error here. I think they should rethink this "hiding unverified Flatpaks by default" idea, because Linux Mint is supposed to be a great beginner distro. Flatpak version has one huge advantage, that being EAC patched glibc included. Both runtime and native Steam versions use system libraries though, so user has to install and update patched glibc-eac for several games to work. All that because GCC developers won't budge, and because EAC devs can't be bothered to make changes. If you ever asked yourself why year of desktop Linux is always (current_year+1) - that's why.

I think what kde needs to do is work on making all their apps coherent and make sure that all of them are full featured and that they don't have 2 or 3 apps doing the same shit. Also think they need to add DRM support to falkon to make it a useable browser and get rid of konqeror all together and ship falkon by default in place of Firefox once they add DRM support.
I suddenly miss the times of dial-up. Maybe I should migrate to Qubes OS if I want any privacy these days. Tested it a few months, and do not consider it suitable for daily driving.
Worst part about Recall is, that even if you disable it, the other person you're talking to on teams, zoom, skype, discord, mastodon, whatever, might have it enabled. It makes every online communication unsafe. Everything you do will be recorded. People should be way more upset about this.
I have a Tuedo laptop, love it.😊
@3:32 You ask if apps in the Linux Mint repos should have warning like unverified Flatpak apps in the Software Manager, but presumably you already trust the people involved with Linux Mint/Ubuntu/Debian -- or you shouldn't be using the OS. In other words, in this case, your security is presumably already breeched. It's apples and oranges.

One of my friends says that the main reason he wont switch is the lack of facial regognition and fingerprint support. I would definitely appreciate the feature. Especially if I can have multiple fingerprints like I do on my phone. Both thumbs and index fingers. Also the lock screen respecting settings I set better. I hate cursor accel and it being on on the lockscreen isn't annoying, but isn't consistent either. Also, the cursor doesn't automatically go to the text box and the dots don't automatically show up. Which again doesn't make it impractical, it simply doesn't feel fluid. Also, I have the integrated monitor on my laptop disabled, and it shows the dots for obfuscated characters sometimes on the integrated but not on the external monitor. Everything after login is fluid. But the login screen needs a lot of work to feel fluid and be consistent between after reboot and after wake from sleep.
I would like a better integration between flatpak permissions and The kde manager. Like some indications to know which permissions to give for the app to behave well

Getting a steam deck got me to dabble with Linux outside of a media server here and there. Microsoft's recall and other shenanigans pushed that dabbling to a full on switch. It was a little confusing and overwhelming at the start, but it didn't take long for the terminal and need GUI to not be scary anymore, thanks in part to your channel and other channels like it. to be honest I am waiting with batted breath for SteamOS to have a general hardware release but at least I don't have to put up with windows bs while I wait. That being said I do you KDE because it feels the most familiar to me.
