This is one scenario that the Gnu Public License (GPL) was designed to prevent. Especially the requirement that any additions / improvements / changes to the code be made Open Source as well is what prevents the "Extend -> Exterminate" part of the scenario. Which is why we should definitely use the GPL more often. We have a lot to thank RMS (Richard Stallman) for.

Richard Stallman is a moron. He claims to want freedom of choice for users, then proceeds to rant about Linux distros not being truly free and open because they make it easy for users to install proprietary software. The thing about freedom of choice is that it means people get to choose things you don't agree with, if somebody wants to install Debian then load it up with Microsoft products, they can, it is their choice. To me, Stallman is the exact opposite of what he claims to stand for.
@sirzorg5728

The problem is that with enough money, you can just nullify that through lobbying. What matters to me is control over software sources. I think Microsoft already factored lost users in their estimates when they implemented the strict system requirements. There was no way they would get the same market penetration as Windows 10. They were much more aggressive in trying to push Windows 10...and pretty much all PCs were compatible. With Windows 11, they've already pushed a release update that prevents Athlon 64 X2 or coreduo (+ everything older) from working. The TPM bypass still won't work. You forgot the requirement to pair every new or changed piece of hardware with your personal Digital License™ database. This is the proof, you only use certified and allowed hardware, that can not circumvent telemetry in a malicious manner. Otherwise it would be rejected and loads of unrelated malfunctions will occur. Due to safety reasons of course. Crucial key component ist the TPM 2.0 cryptographic chip, that prevents even the most experienced hacker - sorry, user - from turning off important data streams, like e.g. taskbar ads, transmission of your browser history, etc.
I was just reading that League of Legends issued an update that now reads overlays while you're playing, creates screenshots of them, and sends them to Riot. Is there anything wrong with Sony and Apple (Microsoft also, btw, network stack) using BSD-licensed software?
@cameronbosch1213
Ай бұрын
Exactly why this hasn't been able to be done with Linux; any customer who buys or uses a copy of something licensed under a copyleft license has the right to the source code and to use, change, and redistribution under the same license. That's why there could be forks of programs such as LibreOffice (from OpenOfficeOrg, now Apache OpenOffice, permissively licensed, and now pretty much dead), XOrg (forked from XFree86, although that was permissively licensed under a slightly modified MIT license until the final release of 4.4, which the fork of the final beta of XFree86 4.4 as XOrg server came from), MATE and Cinnamon (forks of GNOME 2 and 3 respectively) and countless times Debian and Ubuntu have been forked to create new distros. Oddly enough, there used to be boxed Linux distros on CDs and DVDs that you had to pay for to get the distro. That was forever killed by Ubuntu and Canonical's ShipIt service sending free (as in cost AND speech) DVDs of Ubuntu to anybody. That could be done because Mark Shuttleworth is literally a multi-millionare many times over. As much as we all hate Ubuntu and Canonical now, they did manage to change the distribution of Linux distros forever.

Forever...
As someone who is on a Fedora based distro, this hits a bit too close to my fears to be funny.
Bro just discribed ubuntu
Could not help but notice the Samsung style icons used. Samsung probably wishes they had this instead of using Windows and Android...

That was great! Props for changing outfit and business title with every iteration.
The Linux Experiment perfectly demonstrates a Thought Experiment in a very clear and hilarious way! I thoroughly enjoyed this video - thank you to everyone that made and contributed to this video and for all the little details that were just * chefs kiss *
Would have been even funnier if he added an additional tie or one bow tie on top of the first tie per tier. xD But that would have been an extra USD 9.99 per tie per month with an annual auto renewing subscription!

As a software developer, I was perfectly fine with everything you mentioned UNTIL you added a tiered subscription model. Pay-to-unlock is evil and always will be*. But prior to that, everything you mentioned are legitimate ways to improve the user experience. *Oh, wait, you have a tiered subscription model for your own KZread channel. 😕
I thought Nick looked better than usual today but couldn't put my finger on it until after the tie and then suit jacket appeared! Well done Nick!....

This is why I am on Debian. They have a democratic internal structure and are not seeking profit. Their focus on stability also means they aren't going to go for fads. I think they will always remain quite behind compared with operating systems created by profit seeking companies, but they're like a backstop from this kind of enshittification.

I think the opposite side of the coin is Arch Linux. It’s also a community-maintained distro, but spearheading the use of bleeding-edge packages and new technologies. Sure, Fedora uses them day 0, but that is a corporate distro by Red Hat. Day 1 is still good compared to day-0 access.
@docopoper

@@commentarysheep I'm very glad we have arch too. Having a large body of users using software as soon as it comes out is a very important service to provide to the linux community. And it is waaaay better to have two backstops than just one. Both are great options, I only picked Debian over arch out of personal taste.

You mean fads like usr-merge, which change disrupts many packages for no gain?
Nice workd Nick it's really nice new content I see from your channel, big fan btw I really love the linux ews in both the podcast and the KZread version ^^
Lol, thanks a lot Nick for brightening our day. I like the sarcasm and the gradual step by step dressing up in a suit to reflect how ominous the data collection is getting in that distro.
If Windows does become a subscription i bet that 50% of their users will go to either mac, chromeos or linux at the rate they are locking features behind activation.

I am your average... opposite of a power user. I use Windows because it came with the computer, and I don’t really want to have to get my hands in the guts of my computer's OS, and I've heard so many horror stories about users like me getting absolutely screwed by our own incompetence on every other option that I refuse to even bother messing with Linux as a toy or novelty. That said, if Windows makes their OS a subscription... the only thing I hate more than computer junk I don't understand is expensive subscriptions. And I hate Apple's walled garden BS and expensive status symbol hardware, and I've used Chromebooks and they suck. I want something that you just install it and it works, that will run an internet browser, run office tools like a word processor and a spreadsheet program, and run my games. The horror stories have convinced me that Linux is not that... but I will definitely have to at least try the most recommended beginner distro if MS does something frustrating enough, and I suspect a lot of computer users on my level of understanding and comfort are in the same position. Today I read a paper from 1999 criticising the way MS has built an empire selling OSs and how they're a house of cards and even their huge low understanding userbase could get pissed off enough and learn enough about computers to try something else and stop buying not just the products themselves but the slick marketing they come with, and it's all still relevant. If anything, that paper is more prescient 25 years later than it was at the time. Well, that part anyway. The guy's got some political views that were questionable at the time and really didn't age well.
I love the Mr. Robot reference.
I like that this was made before Windows’ Recall feature made headlines.
the fact that you slowly got closer and closer to having a full suit on as this video progressed is a nice little detail
It would look like Red Hat. We already witnessed their enshitification the 90s.
Do you talk about Android?
I love how you slowly "corporatized" the video as it progressed (Changing shirts, softening your voice, using more "inviting hand motions", and using buzz words). Nice touch.
I loved that! Awesome job Thought of something that would give it an authentic flare, but would take another camera. Anyway, Have a few pointless camera switches that does a quarter view of you, but you never look at that the quarter view camera. Zoom in on the quarter view a little bit so the video can slowly pan from side to side.

Bro casually forgot that Cannonical dis exactly this. They were just shy of removing the ability to change default apps or access the terminal. Opt-out marketing? Yes. Ads in the OS? Absolutely! This is why I love Linux though - some asshat company decides to pull a Redmond and we can all just say, “No, I do not accept this”. Then we either use a different distro or we fork!

I lost it at the "scrolling banner" lol. Also corpo Nick looking dashing as ever!
