Windblade: a 3D Printed Transformer

Ғылым және технология

Windblade is a 3D printed transformer designed to print without rafts and without support material and all in one piece, so no assembly required!
I decided to make a video showing my design process and the finished product, as well as why I'm making these things in the first place!
You can download and print Windblade for yourself on Thingiverse, at: www.thingiverse.com/thing:533...

    I have a printer which is just horrible with clearances, so I tried to build your Optimus prime knowing it wasn’t gonna work, but somehow every joint moves perfectly. I don’t know how you did it but I’m so impressed with your design work, it looks and feels great with no supports! Nice job, you truly earned a subscription

    That's so awesome, I'm psyched to hear it. Optimus was the first transformer I did, and it took me the most attempts to fix those joints, and even now they are probably more inconsistent than all of the subsequent transformers I've made (I changed the way I design joints after Optimus because my methods were so broken 😅). Good to know that all of the revisions paid off!

    I've seen quite a few 3D printed TF models before. Hell, I have the literal first print of the first 3D printed transformer in a box around my house somewhere. I have not seen someone attempt and succeed at a whole series of print-in-place TF toys before. Your work is a triumph in both Transformer 3D printing and print-in-place design. You rock!

    I'm flattered, thank you! I have not thought about making a discord or anything like that. I know there are a few forums dedicated to all kinds of DIY transformers, including 3D printed ones, but they are mostly concerned with mods and custom weapons, although some people do attempt to go all the way with a scratch built transformer. There are also a few others who do more intricate, but still DIY and accessible, 3D printed transformers with multiple components. They're totally worth checking out! kzread.info kzread.info/dron/3eGmqMmB7PFrgPe1t-JOZw.html kzread.info/dron/YuCP7TbzR42LHBwICGSDEA.html (They also apparently have way more free time than I do, because they pump these things out like no one's business!)

    You mentioned that in 3D printing that one side had to be flat. I was wondering if it was possible to create the head in two separate halves, hollow out the center to allow light-piping, and then glue the two halves together.

  • @TalmageMadsen

    @TalmageMadsen

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yeah definitely. If you were really pro, you could either: a). print the head in two halves but joined together by a thin layer of material to act as a compliant hinge to fold them together after printing, or b). print the head hollow to begin with so that you could fit in a translucent colored light pipe in there too. I'm not sure I'm good enough to do any compliant hinges, but hollowing out the head of a transformer for a light pipe doesn't seem too difficult.

    You are in the right ballpark. You might give 3D sculpting software a try with this too like ZBrush or Blender to refine some of the shapes. Admittedly, I’m more of an animating rigger, but Jetfire/veritech fighter was my first 3D model and I want to start designing some of my own transformers soon too.

  • @TalmageMadsen

    @TalmageMadsen

    2 жыл бұрын

    You're definitely right. I'm very much approaching this from a purely engineering CAD software route and I am slowly picking up limited sculpting skills on the way. Windblade is the farthest I've come in this, besides some limited sculpting in Meshmixer. I wish you luck on your own transformers, hopefully with your skills, they look better than mine!

  • @lokiwartooth1138

    @lokiwartooth1138

    But making sure from a cad perspective that all moves abd transforms right I think is the way to go. And just take it slow with rendering and sculpting the details. Gather alot of references and pick which way you wanna go and just use the rest for lines and shapes. That all sad. I freakin love it

  • @TalmageMadsen

    You could probably do it in meshmixer or something. I just model faces like any other inventor part. It's kind of jank but they're so small that most fdm printers can't really resolve them anyways.

    Maybe you can make joints more tiight with second glue?

  • @TalmageMadsen

    @TalmageMadsen

    2 жыл бұрын

    That's an interesting idea. I know that there are methods that can be used to tighten ball joints (often used for retail transformers with loose joints). I'm not sure if there are other methods that can be used to tighten up fixed-axis joints given that these joints are traditionally fixed with screws or pins in retail Transformers, not 3d printed together as one unit. Maybe if you had a multi-material extruder on your 3D printer you could do some fancy tricks to make all of the joints tight after printing. I'm not that skilled yet.

  • @TalmageMadsen

    @TalmageMadsen

    2 жыл бұрын

    Just to print one, depends on if you own a printer or not. I print at a university library that charges mostly just for the cost of materials, and I think it cost me $10-13 to print it there. If you're factoring in the many hours it took for me to design it, or that I had to print off a prototype to get the final design right, then it definitely cost more than that. If you have a printer and want to print one yourself, I've made the files free to download on Thingiverse. The link is in the video description.

    I see a problem with you design philosophy. Limiting yourself to making them print in place feels like an unnecessary design constraint. It may help with creativity but is still unnecessary. Why did you want to make them print in place when you could have achieved better results by printing the pieces individually. I can understand not wanting to make them a partsformer but it wouldn’t be a parts former. A parts former by definition is a transformer that requires you to add or remove parts in order to get from one form to the next. But if you’re assembling the transformer and it can transform after you assemble then it wouldn’t be a parts former. Nevertheless it’s still very impressive, but still just a bit confusing.

    The whole 'print in one piece' thing is part of the fun for me, and is a big part of why I get a kick out of making these. I also like it because it's something unique to 3d printing, no other manufacturing technique could produce a transformer this way, so I've embraced the gimmick. It's true though that if I didn't constrain myself this way, I could make some way more complex transformers. There's actually a few creators already that do that that are totally worth checking out: kzread.info kzread.info/dron/3eGmqMmB7PFrgPe1t-JOZw.html kzread.info/dron/YuCP7TbzR42LHBwICGSDEA.html Hope that makes sense to you. Also with the whole partsforming thing, what I meant by that is that I didn't want to make anything like G1 Starscream that you have to break apart into a bunch of pieces to transform, I don't mind transformers being made of multiple pieces (as pretty much all of them are), as long as those pieces are meant to stay together throughout transformation.

    Wow, they're soo bad lols Do you think you could ever get them actually good? I'd love the ability to makes half decent transformers at home someday. But from what I've seen of your efforts the tech simply is not there yet.

Got comedy value I'll give em that. Maybe one day we'll come up with desktop 3d printing tech that's good enough to actually do the job. Have fun lad :)

    Well his usage is still early and the transformations are basic. Give him he'll get better. Once you learn to do more pieces... I bet you could do better damage at slightly better transformations! That is so cool.
