Wind Power on a CAR #1 - Is it FREE?
Ғылым және технология
Can a wind turbine in front of a car harvest FREE energy? This question came to me during a long drive my final year of engineering school. Now we're going to find the answer.
Part one explores the fundamentals of wind turbines using the principles of wind on your hand. In part 2 we'll dive into how much power is available and the theoretical limits on what we can do with it.
I expect this to be at least a four part series and will try to get a part published each month. It's going to be a lot of work but I hope to stick to the one-video-per-month cadence if I can.
Wish me luck!

@QuintBUILDs

I appreciate the props (no pun intended) but if the front of the truck is doing work on the air already and the turbine does some of it instead... I'm honestly not so sure it's a straight conservation of energy problem. Clearly if it were mounted above the truck that would consume more fuel but down in front I suspect maybe not?
@timderks5960
3 жыл бұрын
@@QuintBUILDs Well, if you're gaining electrical energy, and don't need more mechanical(?) energy for moving the vehicle, you're reducing energy losses somewhere else, which could only be wind drag. I can't imagine the turbine doing that, but who knows. It's always better to test than to guess, right?
@QuintBUILDs
3 жыл бұрын
There you go. A further complication is the air that would normally flow through the radiator to cool the engine will definitely be affected. There's a clutch fan in there that should be disengaged at highway speeds. If it has to kick back on then certainly that won't help the effort. But yeah, with enough instrumentation we'll know for sure!

When you put the hands on the turbine i was like enough with the hands dude we get it
The engineer in you would know from the outset that this will be an inefficient system ie the additional drag cause by the blades will be higher than the energy the turbine creates. But a fascinating experiment and learning experience all the same. Keep up the great work.👍

@Medhusalem

@@michaeltucker8645 It doesn't matter where the turbine is positioned. It will always have drag. Since you are using fossil fuels to run your car, it is utterly inefficient to use this kind of setup. What you could do though is to have wind turbines on a ship. They are called flattner rotors and would act like sails and actually would increase a ship's efficiency.
@mattwright2964
2 жыл бұрын
It's going to decrease your cars efficiency so you burn more fossil fuels or use up more battery power if its an EV. If you listen in even o-level science lessons you learn the laws of physics - eg in layman's terms "you can't get something for nothing". If your experiments at least make people realise this it might be useful.

I'm interested in part 2, however... I would hedge a bet there's a reason dealerships don't regularly offer an installable wind turbine package included along with the satellite radio and heated leather seat options. My guess is that when he does more analysis on the energy returned by the turbine vs the energy consumed to drive the whole contraption forward, it'll actually be operating at a loss. It's just going to be a lot harder to notice because the energy has been converted numerous times from chemical energy then to mechanical energy then to wind and then back to mechanical energy and finally to electric energy. None of these processes are wholly efficient, so unless you're driving into a gale force headwind I just don't see where the energy is coming from.
@Vessekx
3 жыл бұрын
Exactly.
@IsThisLossE
3 жыл бұрын
part of me wants to agree, but you'd be driving into the air and losing energy regardless - the wind won't just pass through the turbine and hit the vehicle at the same speed, it'll be reduced after coming in contact with the turbine since the kinetic energy has to go somewhere. i can't wait to be proved right/wrong though!
@stephanweinberger

@@IsThisLossE physics basics: conservation of energy... there is no such thing as "free energy".
@Talkingworms
3 жыл бұрын
@@IsThisLossE The problem is that you are increasing the surface area the air has to flow over by attaching a turbine, which increases friction. Then the wind has to exert force upon the blades at an angle to cause rotational motion which itself is affected by various mechanical frictions and then in turn by electromagnetic forces when coupled to a generator... and Stephen Weinberger has it right: to get net positive energy out of this setup would violate conservation of energy. ... Reality is such a drag.

I have had a similar idea for quite some time which in building for my channel. Although mine will be for a construction style generator. The added drag from point A to point B is accepted for me simply for the fact I won't have to listen to a generator running all day while I'm working. Basically wind turbine driven alternators will charge batteries with high amps on trips and large solar array will extend battery life during use and stationary time. All while I can pull up to a job and enjoy 6-8 hrs of quiet power without any loud generator running all day!! I can't wait until I'm done with it! Nice video bud.

My favorite channel on youtube!
Hello sir, just wanted to let you know you were RIGHT ON THE MONEY. I worked for Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy as the finisher/painter for their wind turbine blades. Of note, I want to mention that the blades we make are intentionally bent slightly backwards at the tip, because the torsion of the wind against the tip causes it to become parallel, increasing its efficiency. This mostly has to do with blade length (53 and 64 meter blades) and yes they are as big up close as you might think. You've gained me as a subscriber, because you are very good at doing your research and presenting in a simple but funny way. Keep it up😁
