Winchester 1887 Lever Action 12 gauge

Patented in 1887 by John Moses Browning, this particular example manufactured in 1890. Shoots 2-1/2" black powder shells. As you can see in this video, this old girl runs like a scalded dog for being 131 years old.
Towards the end I point out some minor differences between the original 1887 and current reproductions.
This video is a departure from my previous videos in that I shoot the firearm as part of the review. I recently moved and have land so shooting black powder whenever I want to isn't a problem any more.
I sincerely hope that you enjoy watching this video as much as I enjoyed making it.

Beautiful piece. My daddy used to reload his own brass 10 gauge shot shells with 120 grains of 1f Swiss black powder and .32 caliber .310 diameter swaged round balls for buckshot to use with my war between the states veteran great papaw’s 10 gauge Parker pokestock that was made in 1888. My daddy didn’t need to press or a die to reload them shells so it was a lot easier than reloading his .45-70 black powder cartridges for his original 1884 Springfield trap door carbine and his .45 colt black powder cartridges for his original colt peacemaker SAA revolver made in 1887

Nice video. The 87 and 1901 are probably my favorite shotguns. I have an original 87 and a Norinco 87 with a drop two conversion. I have videos on my channel. Also just picked up a 1901 10 gauge but haven’t filmed it yet. Still gathering up some components to load up some 10 gauge.

3:26 Only the first chinese repro (those sold by IAC / Pw-87 /Norinco) have the 2 pieces lever with the spring, the Italian made Chiappa has one piece lever like this one. The newer chinese made copies (sold by Cimarron) have also the 1 piece lever.

@@RooftopKY trust me I wanted one so bad. But never thought I would end up with one. Last Oct on my birthday. I finally said screw it and bit the bullet and bought one. And I truly have to say I have no regrets the gun is amazing. If you ever find your way to Las Vegas you are more than welcome. To make a little bit of 45 Long Colt black powder smoke with it.

Also whats so cool about colt it the Factory letter. On the 26th of this month it was shipped to Hartley and Graham in New York City. In 1882 along with 50 just like it. So it's kind of cool you can celebrate its birthday

I have this same gun. It was my grandfather’s that he bought around 1920ish used. It’s been in the family ever since and hasn’t been altered. How do I find shells that I can fire? I have friends that reload but I do t know what formula to give them without blowing my face off

Mine takes black powder 2-1/2" shells only. I don't know of anyone that makes them commercially. I roll my own using magtech brass hulls, 2f black powder, fiber wads and lead shot, and cover with a shot card. There are (or at least there used to be) tutorials on KZread on making black powder 12 gauge shells. They aren't hard to make once you have all the components (that's the hard part).

We're practically neighbors. Lol. I sent you an email earlier today. You are more than welcome to run this old girl through its paces if you want. I just have to load up some more black powder shells. I had so much fun today we went through everything I previously loaded.

I know these guns quit well and if i was U i would shoot smokeless powder out of them meaning these guns are soo well build they handle it without a problem, the inet talk after eachother people say 1887 is blackpowder time zone so it blows up with modern powders........... What not many people know is that all Winchester guns made by John browning designs: Model of 1885 1886 1887 1890 1892 1893 1894 1895 1897 all handle smokeless loads as modern guns.....U can fire a normal 45-70 loads in a 1886 or a CCI stinger in a pump 1890 or a 1 1/4th oz load in a 1893 shotgun..... They where never designedfor that powder but they where so well designed they can handle it and i shoot these guns for several years now only smokeless as i hate black powder as it creates so much fauling and rust.. I once read a article that would test fire barrels of black powder guns and any black powder chamber of that day would handle a pressure of atleast 25.000 psi or more meaning thats the max load of a modern 12g 70mm-2 3/4inch load is around 12.000psi so its nearly impossible to blow that 1887 up (and trust me i tryed with hot loaded birdschot and slugs). There are loads of fairy tales and old storys around, but if u knew better how to design a gun then John Browning go ahead,i know his guns handle what ever load u trow at them.

Okay. 1) it was made and designed in the black powder era. I never said it would blow up. Yes Browning over engineered his guns. He was a genius, there's no disputing that. This gun is old. I'm not going to run it hard. 2) As far as shooting black powder... I actually prefer it. I shoot my Colt and Schofield clones as well as my cap and ball guns all with black powder. Same with my Winchester lever guns. To each their own I guess. It's not that hard to clean up, and rust is an issue if you don't clean it soon after shooting as the residue is corrosive. Vinegar and water with a thorough dry, followed up with ballistol and I have never had an issue. 3) as far as internet stories about blowing up with smokeless. I haven't heard them. Anyway, thank you for watching, I hope you at least enjoyed seeing that another original made it out of its era and has a good home.
