Absolute beauty! If I were living in the late 1800s I would want this over any other weapon. Shotgun is pure versatility. Small game . Personal defense. Grizzly or buffalo. This is my favorite in RDR2.

It's beautiful. Case color hardening looks great, bluing & furniture are nice too.

Beautiful shotgun. The 1887 and 1901 shotguns are my favorites. Have a couple originals on my channel.

the chiappa is far superior, i played with and nearly brough a norinco 2nd hand. but my local store got these in new and given chiappa's reputation & the 2 other chiappa's i own, i paid for the chiappa sight unseen. worth evey $$$

Not at all. like a lot of leaver guns, it fairly complex. a basic clean can be done without diasaaembly. I use a microfibre cloth with a little oil and get my hand in there to wipe the fowling out. good news is that you can put a cleaning rod through from the breech without disassembly

Can you place a round in the chamber (all the way in not just on the lifter) and then load the magazine? This would be a nice advantage incase you suddenly needed to bring it into action.

I have a chance to get an original 1887 from year 1889, long barel, original black powder frame and all, should i go for it? I want to know durable the original 1887s were, can they handle modern loads? Are parts likely to brake? Is it a good idea as a hone defence/ocassional shooter in 2023? What were some common issues with this gun? Thank you for reply.

So, blackpowder runs significantly lower pressures. I wouldn't even run cowboy loads with modern powder in an original gun. If it's in good condition I would put it in the safe as an investment. The biggest problem is loading it. There is a very good reason it's the only lever action shotgun and was quickly superseded by the pump action. Even John Browning himself didn't like the concept. It was a fantastic gun in 1887 but in 2023 there are far better options. Now as an occasional shooter, collectors piece or for cowboy action, it's so much fun.

Just got the Cimarron which works fine. A dull black finish and barrel is more like 19.5”. $600 US. Sure is cool looking

Why put an optic on a shotgun like this ? To shoot slugs at 50 to 100 yards... Not the ideal way it was initially made to shoot, but still, nice to have a choice.

Odd. I just aquired a 22" Chiappa 1887 12 gauge and the top of the barrel is not drilled and tapped for a scope.
