How To spot A FAKE SPUHR mount

Спорт

As I know there is quite a large market for used scope mounts, I thought it may come in handy for some to know that not all is as it seems.
There is quite a big difference between the mounts, not only looks, but also dimensions.
The original inner diameter if the rings are 33.57mm and for the counterfit one this is 33.02mm. This means that you will potentially squeeze our expensive scope when tightening down the screws.
Enjoy.

    Well, you get what you pay for 😉 If the original is not within budget, I would personally go with a used mount. Or an original, cheaper option. I will at some point be making a video on different mounts and how they stack up against each other.

    Thank you. As a firm Spuhr fan, it’s good to know about the counterfeits that I would not have suspected otherwise. I have sold Spuhr mounts for scopes I no longer owned, so it’s good to have your video in case I’m ever challenged about whether they are genuine.

If you feel I deserve a subscribe that would help me a lot, and please share with everyone, no one should accidently buy a fake Spuhr. All the best and stay safe Best regards @ELR-LONGRANGE.

    I bought the knockoff on purpose just to see how it looked and if it would work...to my surprise it works excellent. I have removed and installed a scope 6 times and all screws still work, nothing has broken, which was my first concern, I assumed they would snap when torqued. But it's held up great on B14 HMR 6.5

    I'm not surprised, I too feel that they are surprisingly good quality. But I still feel that it is wrong to copi a product that is patented, and feel that it is worth knowing how to recognize a fake. And I personally wouldn't want to use it in competition in fear that it would not love up to the punishment it would need ti stand up to.

    I did the same thing, shockingly surprised for 70 compared to 435! Chinese are on a different level, it’s been excellent. My only complaint would be the real spurh is 7075 and I am quite sure the fake is 6061. With that being said, it has been mounted and remounted at the range still holding zero lining up witness marks.

    That is a very good question. I to think they look very impressive in terms of quality. But none the less a fake is a fake and should not be sold as a genuine article. But following your question, they could have made a very good and perfectly legal mount of they would put just a few hours into make some unique mounts an retailing them as something else. But this also requires a lot of time, and I do not think the quick buck makers in China are willing to do this. I have not tested them for how true they are, and I do not have any plans doing this until someone sends me a 34mm scope I can test i with. If someone does send me a 34mm scope for testing, I will make an entire video just in the difference on the original and the fake when on a firearm with heavy recoil.

I have 3 more on order before the gougers get em stopped 😂 the only way to stop these price gougers is to stop buying the overpriced products. That's exactly why I don't buy certain items second hand. I have seen this with both optics and quality knives. And it's very difficult to see a cosmetic difference other than the quality of the material and the durability over time

  • @ELR-Precision

    @ELR-Precision

    That is also an option, i feel there are plenty of good second hand items that are real and just fine at a reduced price. The bottom of the fake one also has smaller lightening holes, i'd be curious to know if they weigh the same or weigh different. They may have removed less material to make it seem like a real one based on weight.

    Well I received my fake. Scope slides in the mount back and forth relatively smooth. With the caps off. The caps literally snap on. Doesn’t take much pressure. But prefer not risking scratching the scope tube. Would also make it more difficult to level. Used some 400 grit paper on them. Focused mostly on the edges. Didn’t take too much time. Touched up with Birch Wood Casey Aluminum black. I don’t think that this mount can handle true factory torque spec’s. I’m going to use purple loctite on the cap screws. And Blue loctite on the cross bolts. 15 inch pounds for caps and 35 inch pounds for the cross bolts.

    I would not risk it. If you sand down material, that to me is not worth the risk of placing a scope in it. The risk that it is not straight would to me be too great. I hope your scope survives. Best wishes Elr-precision

  • @p47rr

    @p47rr

    Ай бұрын

    Yeah I might say the same thing but the aluminum is soft. And the caps are thin. Really only took metal off on the edges. The anodizing isn’t smooth. Didn’t even come close to taking off the finish. The accessory holes on the top caps had burrs that you could feel. So I cleaned those up. Now if the scope didn’t slide back and forth with little effort. I would be concerned. (With the caps off.) I recently bought a Discovery cantilever scope mount. The anodizing is smooth. No sharp edges. Scope slides back and forth so smooth. Normally a fifty dollar mount. But you can find one for under thirty dollars if you look. It is way nicer than the fake. I normally use Warne, Seekins or Leupold rings and mounts. But too expensive to have on every rifle. Just ordered a AR10 in 300 Winchester Magnum. Should be here on Monday. Going to upgrade some parts right away. Larue MBT straight bow trigger, LMT muzzle brake, Tubbs flat wire spring and CMMG Ambi safety selector. Thinking about install an adjustable gas key. Have to buy a staking tool. Was going to pay a gunsmith. But for what for what he charges. I can buy the tool. Family owned a Marina, Went to college to be a car mechanic. Owned a Bicycle Shop for fifteen years. So I’m very mechanical. I should have said in my last posting that I’m going to use Vibra-tite. It’s the same strength as blue loctite. But you can take apart and reassemble without having to reapply up to five times. Plus American Defense says that if you use blue loctite on their mounts it will void the warranty. So when I have a mount that I have no idea the grade of aluminum. That is what I use. For the cap screws low strength purple loctite.

Multiple skilled people were involved in the development only to have it stolen by a guy from china that measured it and programmed a Chinese cnc machine to get it close. The last 10% of precision and quality control is what you pay for.
