Willy's Next Great 5hp Briggs Builds

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

So on today’s Episode of DIY Willy. We take a look at my new to me Briggs and Stratton 5hp engines for my next Briggs builds. One of the engines I was told is a Briggs Raptor block and the other is a 5hp block. Both are model 13 engines and I know the Raptor is a steel sleeve block. I hoping the other one is also.
So follow along as we rebuild these 5hp Briggs engines..

Great finds Willy! I thought the Raptor blocks were extinct! Can't wait for the billet Briggs build! I appreciate the shout out my friend. If the Raptor was a kart engine, it was probably run on Methanol. That would explain the corrosion. Not many people flushed their engine after draining Methanol contaminated engine oil. Good stuff!

There are a few on EBay but not ones I could afford to play with. I will eventually spend the money for parts at least the initial investment is not to noticeable by Mrs. Willy. Of course man you always given me solid advice when I had questions. A shout out is the least I could do.. I have got it really cleaned up and the block looks ready to start prepping for build and cleaned up the crank shaft today and turned out like new. Well I didn’t measure the journal sizes but looks good. Now my parts quest has started. I need a .010 piston and rings and a bower housing and recoil starter.. Pretty much found everything thing else. The intake valve was damaged removing it. I found used valves on the bay site that I hope will work. My only concern is lashing the used valves. There other 5hp engine the seller claimed it would start with a carb. I definitely install a VM22 and see if it will run. Thanks again man for all your advice and thanks for watching!!

@@DIYWilly A good used valve will work just fine. Just remember to lap it into the seat. If the gap for the valve lash is too wide, lap the valve more or use a stone seat grinder to lower the seat. Or you can reface the valve if needs must. (most guys with a valve refacer will do it for free. I wish we lived closer I'd let you use my valve machine) I may have some extra parts somewhere. I'll see if I can locate a .010 or .015 Raptor piston. If the bore is rusty you may want to use a constant pressure hone like a lisle or similar to go to the next oversize. Raptor pistons are sized in .005 increments for oversize. Rings may still be a problem to locate though. I'll holler at you in a few days after I check for goodies at the old shop.

I honed Biggs cylinder today and it turned out pretty good. I also did the valves following a technique I saw on Taryl. Seemed to work really good. Biggs should be in good shape now. I was worried about over sizing Biggs bore but I think it’s fine.

@heathenprojects2639 I need a new .010 piston and blower housing. I broke the piston while removing the stuck rings.

Yeah wives are never happy when we want to buy more stuff for our projects lol. Going to be a little time consuming rebuilding that Briggs👍. I just got done refurbishing/restoring my old 1976 Lincoln AC-225 stick welder (buzz box) I bought off a co worker in the '80's for 50 bucks. 🇺🇸

Yep I guess it’s better to ask for forgiveness than ask for permission…😂 Now the hardest part is finding all the missing and replacement parts I need. That what makes it fun I guess.. Have fun with the welder!! Thanks for watching!!

The discoloration on the rod could be polymerized oil if it was ever overheated really bad. Or possibly corrosion from methanol? Will be cool to see it finished. I always wanted to build a nice flathead back in the day when they were the thing but I was young and broke then.

Hello, The coating is on everything inside the block. I’ve been working to remove it but it has been a pain in the a**. However the block is cleaning up real nice. I have the cylinder freshly honed and gave it a quick valve job. Still need to lash the valve but the seal at the seat looks good.Still much more work to do and it’s progressing nicely. Thanks for watching!!!

Yeah, cleaning is never fun. I’ve glass beaded a couple but I don’t like to. Always afraid I’ll get media trapped somewhere and it will end up causing problems.

@WalkerSmallEnginePerformance I was think of using glass bead on this block.. I’ve used wire wheels so far and a lot of elbow grease. Starting to look good 👍.

I definitely have my share of rusty parts now. The rings were stuck on the piston and while getting them off I broke the piston. Finding a replacement as proven difficult.😣 Parts are going to be a problem I guess.

Or governor hole. Thats either an i/c or industrial plus. Either way tap gov hole and throw a bolt or whatever in it. It is pretty much a raptor. I have 2 of them. One built and one bare block.
