William T. Cavanaugh, Ph.D. on "God in Things and People: Commodity Fetishism and the Eucharist"

William T. Cavanaugh, Ph.D. offered the sixth in a six-part lecture series "The Only Solution is Love: The Eucharist and Catholic Social Teaching," which took place at the University of Notre Dame. This lecture series, developed by Michael Baxter, Ph.D., is sponsored by the McGrath Institute for Church Life, and co-sponsored by the Center for Social Concerns and the Department of Theology. His lecture "God in Things and People: Commodity Fetishism and the Eucharist" highlights how a pathology of our economic system is its simultaneous deification of things and reification of people: we infuse divinity into material things while treating people as means for profit. In his lecture, Dr. Cavanaugh explores the Eucharist as an antidote to this idolatry by offering a sacramental way of seeing God's presence in the material world, while identifying people, especially the poor, with God in Christ.

If you cannot find Christ in the beggar at the church door, you will not find Him in the chalice. - St. John Chrysostom, Homily 50.4 on the Gospel of Matthew
