    Nice to see the car won’t go entirely to waste . When I dragged my 72 cutlass out of a barn it took a couple days to get it running and driving . Someone replaced the resistance wire to the dist.with a full 12 volt wire and the result was a severe skip in the motor . I bet that is why it was parked.

    I had the same 3.8 in my 84 monte carlo (that I have since I was 15 ). In 2018 I had rod knock on cylinder 3. Ever since then it was sitting until November of last year when finally had enough money saved up that I swap in a 5.3 with 4l60e .it took me about 1 month since I was waiting for swap parts and only have time to work on it on the weekends. But it was all worth it because she is filling back on the road.

    Anyone who drives a G Body in road salt is a fool. It will still rust out even if you wash it each day. I destroyed a 88 SS driving in only 2 winters, a drive through car wash was 100 yards down the street, I went through it every single day and the car was still destroyed. I bought a brand new 2001 Dodge Ram and in 4 years it was Swiss cheese in NY salt. Guys who claim salt doesn’t hurt cars is giving bad advice.

    I have an 87, Wisconsin car that never saw roads in the winter! Question...would it be worth swapping the 3.8 for a 305-307??? Would the existing tranny bolt up? I'll so appreciate your response!

  • @ClassicGBodyGarage

    @ClassicGBodyGarage

    4 ай бұрын

    If you're going go through the trouble of a swap then I would personally make it worthwhile and go with a 350. You must go with an Olds, Buick or Pontiac engine as thats what the trans will accept. If you go with a Chevy then you need to change the trans. But as far as the trans holding up, most V6 cars used the Turbo 350 so you will have to confirm you have this trans. If yours has the Metric 200 then it won't last.

    I do an old school tune-up on my cars and then some. - mechanical fuel pump will work, but eventually it'll burst and leave a trail of fluid. So replace it when you do the fuel filter. - spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor button, sometimes the coil, PCV valve, air filter, breather filter, all vacuum lines, all rubber lines period, all plastic check valves in the emissions stuff and wiper hoses. - brake hoses get changed, etc. I could keep going. I've had "driving restorations" that were my only car in my youth and learned a lot of lessons the hard way. Like living in upstate NY in the winter with a carb car means keeping a fuel can in the trunk, because fuel line freeze up and vapor lock are real. - change the v-belts because of they're old - they're not good. Always keep a spare v-belt on you too. - don't trust the rear diff fluid is good. I've changed drum brakes to find the seal leaked and the bearings were about to say "send it!" With squeals and bangs on the next trip. If it doesn't leak, that doesn't mean it didn't. 🤣 I love my old cars, and my Thirdgen Camaro gave me trust issues. My G-Body has had first class treatment to ensure I don't learn more lessons.

    The RPO code "LD5" 3.8L VIN code "A" 231 CID V6 was a heap and had a terrible oiling system. This one appears to be US assembled, but no VIN, can't win, so it might have a VIN like: 1G3 for US made Oldsmobile, GR47 for Cutlass Supreme two door, A for 3.8L (231 CID) V6 with two barrel, Buick produced (although by 1986 considered "Corporate), RPO code "LD5", then a check digit, then G for the 1986 model year, maybe R for Arlington, TX assembly or P for Pontiac, MI assembly (among other choices), and the rest is the production sequence. No SPID, wish you did (on the trunk label...it's there, but you didn't show it), but possible code 22 or 25 Light Blue exterior paint.

    You know your VIN and RPO codes for sure. I haven't decoded this one on where it was built.

    @@ClassicGBodyGarage I didn't see a Canadian maple leaf decal on the door (assuming it didn't fall off), so that rules out Ste. Therese, Quebec Canada if so. Arlington and Pontiac would be my two guesses. Over the years, they were built at other plants too, such as Framingham, Doraville, and Lansing, but those were typically in the earlier years.

    I've had several of those 3.8 engines and they're garbage. The biggest problem with them is the external oil pump that goes out and the bearings get destroyed .
