Will Syril Karn Join the Rebellion or Empire Now?

Ойын-сауық

What is Syril Karn's point of view now that he has been fired from his corporate security gig? A man like the deputy inspector will not just sit on the sidelines during a galactic civil war. Will he join the Rebellion or the Empire or become a independent mercenary bringing justice as he sees fit?

Here's what I love most about Syril: 1) He feels authentically human. His decisions & demeanor make sense from his pov. 2) I LOVE THAT I DONT KNOW WHAT HE WILL DO!!! It's so refreshing to have cognitive dissonance & nuance in Star Wars

I totally agree with you. I love that we understand his motivations even though we don’t really know him. At once I can get where he’s coming from and also really want to know more. I can follow his logic and the decisions he makes based on his pov. It’s why even though he is just as dogged in the first few episodes as Riva was in her corresponding introduction, he makes so much more sense to me. Plus, I love that we see evidence of his vulnerabilities and insecurities and can feel for him even while still wanting Andor to get prevail. After this, even if he becomes an irrational monster bent on revenge, I’ll still always have some sympathy for the ideological, eager youth who so desperately wanted to do the right thing.

@@ellicel Exactly. Syril Karn only had around 30 minutes of screentime for this entire show, yet in that small amount of time, they've made him one of the most relatable villains in this franchise, just through damned good writing. When you are really interested to keep following the bad guy, even when he is a threat to the protagonists, you know they've made a good character. I would argue that the Chief Inspector was not incompetent, he was being a realist. He knew exactly what kind of Imperial response Morlana would get if the corp sec wasn't up to par. He also gave some very good reasons as to why Karn shouldn't pursue this investigation, especially regarding the circumstances of the situation and the timing at this exact moment with the pending review. Karn then disobeys direct orders and makes the situation 100x worse for corp sec and basically destroys their organization. GG.

  • @ClanWeirWolf

    @ClanWeirWolf

One Could argue that the Chief Inspector is incompetent for letting things get to that point. Remember the whole work atmosphere of the organization, everyone is acting more like rent-a-cops and that attitude would be set by the Chief Inspector. Notice how all the uniforms are saggy and almost seem ill-fitting, no one seems to be taking the work seriously. This could lead also corruption and unlawful behavior. The only one who seems to want to be professional like Syril is Sergeant Linus. If the Chief Inspector had set a higher standard, maybe those two officers wouldn't had tried to pull that stunt on Cassian. Or if those two had acted regardless it wouldn't have looked so bad on the organizations part with everything/one acting at a higher standard and them looking into the incident instead of trying to sweep under the rug would give them points.

The fact that they got killed and no one aside from Karn cared probably speaks volumes as far as their character. Karn was the rookie who played by the book. The CI was the guy who's seen it all and is jaded by reality. You ever been a cog in the machine and forced to do shit you don't like? That's where I see the Chief Inspector was stuck at. Optimistically, he's already beginning to see how inefficient the empire is, so the cracks are forming. But I can also see him being crushed under the weight of in order to get ahead in that world you just have to succumb to the pressure. Even his expression - as blank as it seemed - was anything but. I didn't like him at first, but now I actually do. It was his performance that sold me. Even the awkward cringe moment of the speech to his men. This actor went in with his all. At this point, I feel for what he's lost, the regret in his decisions, and I feel for the people of Ferrix. These three episodes gave us a chance to get to know them, and to care about what they lost and what happens to them. My college English professor taught me the important lesson that you need to give your audience a reason to care about what the characters lose, or they won't become invested. I wrote a new a new first chapter for my book, and when I gave it back to him, he read it and said, "That did it. Now I care." These writers understand that lesson.

Speaking as a Marine NCO, you hit the nail on the head describing moral standards and micromanagement in martial organizations. It was individual dedication to the mission and giving NCOs the authority to act on their own initiative within the commander's intent that made the USMC so effective historically. The more I think about it, the more I see similarities between real history and the results of the platoon level command styles of the Imperials and Rebel Alliance. When officers are only focused on power and politics (I'm talking about organizational politics here, anything to do with the civilian government), the entire organization suffers. When officers lay out the mission objectives and let NCOs adapt to the realities on the ground, war of attrition can be lessened to a certain extent, at least on a small scale.

In a different story, Syril would be a young detective standing up for truth, justice, and the American Way. Javert from Les Miserables has been mentioned a couple of times, and at this moment I'm thinking Syril will take that trajectory. We've got two seasons of story, and I expect he will be in every episode to a tragic finish in the last...like Javert.

Superb analysis! Andor is really an excellent mature, well-written and more complex piece of Star Wars material. The'Star Wars light' stuff (as Robert Meyer Burnett describes them), such as Mando, Obi Wan and Boba Fett - missed the mark. I would like to see the Gilroys and their team more involved in Star Wars outputs and to work on a post-TRoS trilogy or an Old Republic trilogy.

From Syril Karn's very first scene, I immediately saw him as the gritty Star Wars version PAUL BLART: MALL COP. He's just a well-meaning employee who maybe takes his job a bit too seriously and is a supercop wannabe. I really enjoy his character for not being just a simplistic villain. Andor feels slow while watching it, but becomes one of the best Star Wars shows once you slowly soak in all the details because it is supposed to make you think.

I like his character a lot actually. Is he the brightest, no. However, he's also clearly undertrained. He is the type of person who wants to do the right thing though and he is willing to put his own life on the line to try and make that difference happen. Yes, he somewhat crumbled under pressure but that is partially due to his lack of training and preperation for situations like that and the fact that he really didn't betray his men with any extremely valuable knowledge. He is an honorable man just pointed in the wrong direction. He is someone I want to see more of. Same goes for the man that was leading the squads with him. He seems like a good soldier who also wants justice to be served. We need more of them both. Personally, I want to see both on the side of the Empire because I'm tired of the Empire always being portrayed as stuck-up snobs only concerned about themselves. There were plenty of people in the Empire who were not evil themselves, just pointed in the wrong the direction. That is part of war. The Empire has always been partially portrayed in the same light as the Germans in WWII which makes sense since so much of the combat is based on WWII combat. While the Germans definitely had some hideous people with a despicable lack of character and values, there were also people on that side of the war who weren't necessarily evil themselves. They knew their country did some evil things however, they were fighting to protect their families (and were somewhat forced to). Good people can end up supporting horrible causes. That is what makes war so difficult. Millions of good men and women have to die on both sides to reach the truly sinister core. With that said, wars such as WWII have to happen because people like the German leaders (The Empire in SW) have to be put to a stop.

Although I completely agree with you and your analysis of the human condition is very accurate. I've often stated the same. I need to also highlight that people are what their government decrees. In the case of Germany, the laws of the people changed once new leadership stepped in. When such things happen people dont really have the choice but to follow or be punished. Most people fall in line, a good 98% dont want their lives ruined, and so things only get worse. But many did fight that system and many died trying even from within the military. Look at the government of your own people and see that the same can happen anywhere. Its just a matter of leadership and paper laws that determine what people will so willingly do. The same can be seen in miniature within cooperate environments just like we saw with Syril. No one cares about the problem. Only that the problem needs to go away. Doing the right thing is harder and less convenient. That is genuinely what people do, will do, and have done when faced under adversity. As good star wars characters show and I have personally learned in life. Caring is a good thing they tell us. But when you actually truly care and do your best to care about others. That is when everyone walks away from you and there is no floor left to stand on. Simply because you cared more about others than the people around you ever could. Syril, Anakin, Dooku, and other such characters all cared too much while others did not. They all hit the wall that forced them to try helping others by other means as nothing in their position could allow them to help people. Then with a little blackmail you have yourself a sith lord unable to go back.

1.) Syril didn’t care about the corpos (that were killed by Andor) one bit. It was nicely set up to show the audience that Cyril is desperate to move up by a.) the director mentioned him putting his feet on his desk in his absence which hints toward Cyril already is trying to picture himself in the director’s chair. And by b.) he tailored his uniform to stand out, look more professional and director-worthy. Therefore, Cyril saw an opportunity in the director’s cautious approach (plus potential laziness) to come through as the shining hero, not just to his underlings (who seem to not respect him as much as Cyril would like) but to the director and the higher echelons of the corporation. Cyril throws the director’s warning, or more foreshadowing, into the wind and went to grab this opportunity for himself. I never picked up on Cyril’s care for the two corpos killed, he was never shown to look into their files, put up their holograms or mention them by their names. No, Cyril didn’t care one bit about the two corpos, he wanted his feet on that director’s desk. BUT, once he saw men under his control die, men who were just living, breathing next to him on the shuttle to the ground….that truly shook him to the core, which is only natural for a person witnessing combat and death for the first time. Deep down he was reliving everything…the director’s warning, his dogged pursuit and set up of a covert mission against strict orders, the confusion on the ground, and the bomb. Where does Cyril go from here? Why would this incident, which was obviously his fault, be the catalyst for Cyril to abandon his neat, organized and bureaucratic leaning life? The Rebels at this point are the polar opposite, they’re disorganized and scattered, they’re in chaos, an environment in which Cyril isn’t able to even picture himself. No, what would make sense is either a.) he gets picked up by Dedra in her quest to figure out what was going on the ground (they placed Cyril conveniently on Coruscant after all) and she decides to get him a entry position at the ISB….or, more shockingly, Dedra is his sister (they both are the exact same anal-retentive and exacting persona, Cyril’s mother seems to be more mad at his failure than happy over his survival; slap first, hug later) and the mother begs Dedra to get Cyril a job….either way, Cyril should end up at ISB first, because the incident of his failed mission, wasn’t a strong enough catalyst for his character’s arc. In order to show the audience the inner workings of the Empire, the oppression, the plundering and destruction of entire planets, slavery, genocide, etc now THAT would make a perfect catalyst for Cyril. Someone who seems the perfect fit for the Empire, who loves bureaucracy, order, well-fitting uniforms….to slowly be disillusioned, then shocked….until something so awful happens in front of him (firing squad against civilians) to catapult him out of his desperately held worldviews into chaos.

At first I’d say he’s angry at the end of episode 3 and that might push him to find a place with the empire, possibly with Dedra Meero at the ISB. Yet his silence when being dressed down with the others says more that he’s grieving a loss. Whether it’s his men, his career or his position in the corporation we won’t know until he says something. Since he is going back to Coruscant, and he obviously doesn’t want to be there with his mother, there’s the possibility he could end up working for Mon Mothma and by extension the rebellion. He seems like he could do well in either group, though honestly he’s probably be happier with the purpose of the rebellion if he works for Mon Mothma. She’s been the morale compass of the Alliance after destroying the first Death Star. But if he has to work for Saw Gerrera he’s not going to be able to handle that level of fanaticism.

Here’s what I find absolutely amazing about Syril he feels the most human. He cares about his men even those that never worked under him. He believes in the system and if everyone who’s good and lawful he feels he’s doing the right job. he has a high morale code he’s almost at inspector Javert levels of dedication. But he’s now seeing some of the cracks in the system. When his corporate boss the chief director is trying to slide under the rug the death of two agents saying quite callously they got what they had coming you can feel Syrils reaction is almost disgust. It reminds me a lot of like how Anakin cared a lot about the clones troopers and people around him instead of feeling like their tools to be used and discarded. In Syrils first taste of actual combat he’s literally numbed by the experience shocked at seeing his fellow agents killed and does the not Javert thing and goes back to help his fellow agents. Afterwards and still numb at the loss he doesn’t make no excuses and takes his punishment. Going back home defeated but still has that feeling he can set things right bring the people into justice. My prediction will be he will likely team up with agent Meero and either uncover luthens involvement but might have a conscious of faith either as he sees how the ISB just brutalizes the people or it may be the complete opposite that’s what I like is this show on characters we know we see them slowly evolve into the heroes and villains they will become others it can be either way.

I fully expect Syril Karn's next allegiance will be to the empire, the way he's wired right now he still has every reason to believe he was doing to right thing against the bad criminals, who now have not only got away with murder, but are partly the cause of him getting fired and humiliated. But his morality isn't "off" per se, nor does he strike me as an imbecile. I could see a future him, after working for the empire and learning more about 'friends' and 'enemies' (much like Callus' story told in SW: Rebels 6:34) he turns around and becomes a rebel double agent.

I would very much like to see Syral learn from his mistakes and get the jump on Andor somewhere.
