Will People Ever See It? - Alan Watts On The System

An inspirational and profound speech on jobs, work as play, and the system by Alan Watts.
Original Audio sourced from: “Alan Watts - The Works”
Speaker: Alan Watts
“This is the real secret of life - to be completely engaged with what you are doing in the here and now. And instead of calling it work, realize it is play.”

T&H Inspiration is on a mission to share inspiring wisdom. The goal is to have you pause, think, and reflect. Many of our videos revolve around the extraordinary teachings of Alan Watts that we produce with permission from the Alan Watts Electronic University.
T&H also films and releases original interviews with iconic people who have experienced successes, while also persevering through life's highs and lows. We look forward to sharing more of these perspectives and insights.
Our hope with these videos is to push your thinking. As Alan Watts said “No one is more dangerously insane than one who is sane all the time: he is like a steel bridge without flexibility, and the order of his life is rigid and brittle.” - Alan Watts.

Hi T&H family, this lecture from Alan Watts is always a favorite. His ideas on work, money, and life are so profound. We love reading your comments below. If you could be paid for playing, what would you do? And if you already are paid for doing something you love, share what you've learned with our community.

I've made a living as an actress most of my life. I literally get PAID to PLAY! I'm, "working," today, and I cannot wait! Do what gives you joy and the money will follow. If it doesn't...do it anyway! And get a day job that isn't soul-sucking.

I’ve come a conclusion in my own life, I’ve submitted myself for the past nearly 5 years to one company, I’ve done almost everything there is to do at said company rather than be a manager. The fact of the matter is, that nobody there including those in charge seem to be that happy, they seem to be struggling in their own ways outside of work, ways that seem as though tethered through our environment, that tie together the job, and the goals you’re entertaining If we conform, we fail. That is why we must indulge in the highest form of education. Experience. We must gracefully move forward through each experience. Each job is a different experience that will open you to new pathways in your brain, allowing you to grow, unfortunately it’s when we’ve found comfort in what we do that we find ourselves geared towards the most painful experience. It’s when you’ve gotten so used to the habits, that they drive you mad.

Great video. Thank you. Alan Watts is such a legend. That video sums up the ongoing journey of my life. The battle between survival in a sick and broken system and of thriving as a human. Going right back to school.... Which I hated and saw it as pointless but I still excelled... Then to work.... Sometimes I hated it.... Sometimes it was good.... Again was good at every career I've had..... Still saw so much of it as pointless.... Have worked for myself numerous times.... Loved the freedom and flexibility. Now I'm a blend of technical, creative, entrepreneurial and human and can understand all types. I've been told that's pretty unusual. I guess I'm a creative at heart but still need money..... So the battle continues!

Came to a conclusion of a negative consequences. It troubled me ! I observed my thinking of it all , laughed cause 🤣 it his idea. He can do that. As I thought about it. People disregard stuff for the lamest things. That is the choice. So the person who started the act 🎬 🤔 ! Look both ways before you cross the road ! Is a wise statement? Right Would you disregard it if that person who started the statement look both aways before you cross, was killed by crossing the road ? Would stop looking or would you figure out that . Observation is best. Realize the truth of all statements. Because of personal experiences. Not cause someone said it. Even Jesus Christ teachings. You can see it's truth stitched through the life you have already lived, when you look from a spiritual development!

Being your own boss is only bossing your own being around. Like any desire, be very careful what you ask for. It will be and won't be anything like you imagine it will be. LOL!! Desire is such a nasty game of lack and somethingness. It's terribly fun. You think you want what you want until you realize you know that you never wanted anything you desired, and that you never got anything you only thought you desired. You only got yourself which is everything you ever have as there is nothing else to have.

I get job satisfaction in what I do and work for. As a teacher it's rewarding to interact with my students, be a facilitator to inspire them and allow their ideas to flow. What I don't like is all the records and data keeping. A good video to realise that happiness lies in just being yourself Alan said he didn't even owe a tv. That's it. Don't have to put up with the Joneses and follow fashion. .

I see the system for what it is now at the cost of pain and disbelief. If people continue to go with this system, which is changing at a very rapid paste. Unfortunately they will be off so much worse than they were but 2/3 years ago. But me and my fellow brothers and sisters will rise once the phoenix rises.

I think some TV can help in growth but it all depends what you choose to watch. Advertisements and news being the worst in my opinion, however, educational documentaries or movies/shows with difficult plot lines or social commentary can be beneficial.
