    Should a double up cans of Berryman's in the tank for the old trip clean it out after the carburetor had been sitting on the shelf asking how dare gonna do that a 1000 times the appointment tour 2 cans purr fill up in the tank which is much more than a recommended limit but according to Barrington you can't overdope the stuff I've seen people run motorcycle engines on straight barrier ones and it didn't hurt him so I would to chat to burst Philip it's permissible and probably do away with a lot of your stumbling and time at his drive😅

What a great Power Tour Vlog! I am glad you posted it in its total length, I am sure in order to keep from having to edit and post every night, it gives you all more time to enjoy the time with friends. Congrats to the Cutlass making making the trip! Note: never let your friend volunteer to change your bad starter, removing the heat shield that goes between the Big block 455 and starter saying it is unnecessary junk. Its an inexpensive piece of heat shield whose removal caused a very expensive starter delivery and replacement on my 442.

    1:26:00 after having recently done my suspension, I didn't torque down the brake caliper bolts and they slowly walked their way out until it started rattling, so I torqued it down and everything was peachy. Point of the comment, it's nice to see that even people who spend a lot of time working on cars sometimes overlook these things and it wasn't just me.

    A tip for removing shocks - Use the appropriate socket on top bolt, use a long extension and go through wheel well into engine bay. Use socket and extension to lever the top of the rod back and forth and it will break off. Much easier that fighting the rusty hardware.

  • @doctorporkchop2781

    @doctorporkchop2781

    9 ай бұрын

    My buddy's uncle told us that tip/trick back in 1987.....I have always busted the top nut off every front shock ever since. No that technique is not in any manual, but so what.....the shock is going in the metal recycling pile

  • @christopherhylton8462
    @christopherhylton8462 Жыл бұрын

    Saw that you already got the front shocks replaced but it you find yourself replacing others like it in the future, take this for what it is worth. Yes, the center stud always spins when trying to remove the top nut. What I always did was get the appropriate sized socket (1/2 inch I believe it was) and the longest extension in my tool box. Then, I would put the socket on the nut and use the extension for leverage to snap the stud off (grab the extension at the top, and push and pull towards the front of the car and back rapidly). Usually, after a few seconds of doing it, the stud would heat up enough to reach its fatigue point and just snap off. Just a trick an old GM tech taught me when I was starting out in the 80's.

  • @moose4130

    @moose4130

    Жыл бұрын

    Came here to say the same. Never try to unscrew those nuts, always break the stud. Use a long extension, or the socket on a ratchet will work, too. Then you can bend the stud, turn the shaft, then bend the stud in a different direction. Continue until stud breaks.

    Well, here I am in little old New Zealand, in the middle of winter, watching a couple of very entertaining people take a 50-year-old Cutlass on a near-3000 mile trip in a week. Would I want to be there in person and experience that? From the readying of the beast for her tour of duty and the scenery of the countryside as you both settle into the mammoth task of completing the first leg, I was dubious. I could hear the 'wug-wug-wug' of the driveshaft U-joint as you coasted to a stop each time and thought that it was either a U-joint, a brake binding or a wheel or diff bearing going west.....and as it got worse, not better, the brake idea was thrown out and I just hoped you'd get home. Man, there are some beautiful areas in your huge country! As you cruised down between states and met up with different (and familiar) people, the Cutlass was definitely proving her worth. Nothing like cruising in a big comfy car as she eats up the miles on a long trip, eh....although think Ike might be a bit seasick when he gets home from the lack of shock absorption up front of that big wagon! Lovely to see the huge array of vehicles of all ages, makes and conditions as they rumbled, roared or cackled by and the size of those venues could probably be twice what they are and still have issues fitting them all in before closing time! Totally awestruck by the number and SIZE of the performance parts shops you have over there - and even of the general parts stores like O'Reilly's. Over here we have nothing that could compare with the huge range they all have available and I must admit to being quite jealous of that! Guaranteed if you headed down here, you'd take one look in a Repco or Supercheap Auto and laugh your heads off.....if you weren't totally frustrated because you had to wait for several days for them to order in the part you needed.....and that's even in the biggest city we have! Glad you took advantage of the sales at Summit though - even if there are no plans for what you bought yet! This Power Tour video is different from others in a lot of respects as it shows the true human element and not just hyping up the event itself. Mook - your voice-overs are great and I love the little witticisms that get injected - it makes the video all the ore authentic. The fact the Cutlass was able to do the near 3000 mile trip with a couple of niggles just goes to show what a great car it still is after all these years and I'm glad it was just a U-joint out of whack.....so you gave it a couple and put it back in and she got you home! I'd be very proud of that car if it had done that trip for me. Absolutely loved the commentary from both of you as well.....and would I ever want to do a power tour in a 50-year-old classic? Damn right I would! Where do I sign up for the one in 2024? ....and where should I start the tour? ....and where can I find an Olds Cutlass? I guess I will just have to find out, eh? All the best

    What a journey and, other than a few minor issues, very much trouble free! That old Cutlass absolutely deserves a good spa day or two. 🙂 I need to come to terms with Power Tour really being more of an east coast thing and wrap my head around making it a truly cross-country endeavor. Looks like a LOT of fun... but it's a pretty daunting prospect. Lastly, congratulations to you both on the 1M mark for JYD. It might be Kevin's baby, but Mook is a huge part of it's success, too. Hey! I know that Slo-pra! Great video! A trick I learned from an old mechanic for doing GM front shocks: Put a 9/16ths deep well socket with the longest extension you can muster on the top nut. Rock the extension front and back until the nut and the top of the shock shaft shear off. Then shock is off. Don't care about keeping the shock intact as it gets tossed into the trash.

    So the outside U-joint snap rings are probably a LOT better because you're absolutely 100% SURE they're in and locked, however the are a NIGHTMARE to get out sometimes, especially when you're on the SIDE OF THE ROAD or in a parking lot and you're under your brother's 89 OBS truck and when they manufactured the truck they used up whatever they had on the shelf at the GM assembly plant and you're stuck with 2 different sized joints on the same end. Yeah. Dealt with that once in the rain at 2 am. Fun stuff

    That was an amazing trip. I was telling my husband about your journey and he said “isn’t the like Mini Takes the States”? I informed him that this was a tour for REAL CARS, not clown cars 🙄 He now is aware that Minis are not real cars 🤣 Thanks for sharing your epic trip❤️

    That a really nice car and I think personally that you should drop those points and condenser and put a pertronix 2 or 3 and that would make a huge difference. I did this conversion on mine and it starts and runs a 100% better.

    This brings back memories of my '71 Cutlass. Although it was a 4 door, it was a cool 😎 car. Did the shocks just like you, but in '86 on a farm income, the rears got J.C Whitney helper springs over the rear shocks which really worked well. About 200,000 I replaced the timing chain. You could literally take the chain off the sprockets without taking the sprockets off. That's how stretched it was. Also found a 4-barrel intake and matching carb at a local yard. Replaced the sloppy distributor with a reman and it really made that 350 rocket 🚀 motivate. Huge difference! Oh, I also did rebuild the carb. Never had a stumbling issue after that. Replaced the ⛽️ gas tank. Replaced the cracked windshield with one from the scrap yard. Did a lot of other things to the interior such as new carpeting, stereo, the usual. Sold it to my cousin. Then he sold it. Oh well. 😊

    Those piston rods in the shocks make good punches. Grind the ends to whatever size, shape you need and they're free from worn out shocks.

    Well done Mook. Those race tracks are great, we took our company cars to a driving school at the Calder thunder dome in AUS once and took em on the oval, we were supposed to stick to 80 and we were all doing 110-130 in stock company sedans. Good fun. Well done again, kevin was handy too 😂. Congrats on the Million too 👍

    I tour'd 2020 with a rebuilt 87 Dodge Daytona. Drove all the way from Las Vegas, Nevada to do it. That car made it the entire drive. The only problem on return was a couple belts and something pierced my windshield reservoir. Me and my girl made our own set of goals as part of the tour. Wink wink. My dumb brain decided to loan it out to someone for a couple days...and they totaled it. I would rebuild it, but the frame was bent way out of shape toward unrecoverable. Love you guys both! Your personalities are perfect for this kind of video and I hope for your successes in the future!

    My dad's 65 Pontiac Catalina had a 2 barrel rodcester carburator and it was missing a small metal ball that allowed the accelerator pump to work so we put a BB gun BB in there and now the accelerator pump works

    Brit here. While I know that 50 miles/1 hour is a long way for us, and 200 miles/4 hours is completely normal for you strange Americans, I did once do 1000 miles across most of Europe (West to East and 6 countries). I had a co-pilot and getting there was fine, but he got drunk at the wedding and it was left to me to drive the 1000 miles home. It nearly killed me. Kudos to truck drivers who do it regularly. I never want to drive more than 250 miles ever again. I just love your Cutlass. I've only been to the States four times, and most of that was between 1982 and 1999, so I love those old American cars, cos that is what I know.

The time lapse on Mook eating her Cinnamon roll. Was a hoot ! Airborne death from above. 😎 Mook is not scared of nothing. Enjoyed the video. Always something to do with cars. The U-Joint was unexpected. But, necessary just glad it wasn’t serious. Fun video 💯👍👊

    Cool video! I’m a Red Seal diesel mechanic from Canada, an older guy I used to work with for a few years before he retired a couple years ago had a 1955 /56 Chevy. He and a couple of his friends always went to Minneapolis every year to the car shows, they would load their cars up on trailers though to haul over the border. They would spend like 4 days and it’s all I heard for about a week at work there following week lol. He loved it.
